I think he meant independence from Netherlands Antilles, which had its own team until its dissolution 2010. All Dutch territories (except Aruba) were part of Netherlands Antilles until 2010. Bonaire, Curaçao and Sint Maarten are part of CONCACAF; but Saba and Sint Eustatius are not.

There is a difference between the Kingdom of the Netherlands and the Netherlands. Aruba and Curacao along with Sint Maarten and the Netherlands are constituent countries within the Kingdom of the Netherlands. They act more like the countries that make up the UK, like England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. They are not like British territories. Bonaire, Sint Eustasius and Saba along with the mainland provinces make up the Netherlands. This is why Aruba and Curacao are FIFA affiliated and can compete in the World Cup but Bonaire cant.
