Part of the issue I think is CONMEBOL being the SOUTH American football federation, hosting a tournament in another confederations territory, where they have little experience with fan culture, stadiums, and hosting a tournament in general. If this was in South America it would not have happened because they actually know how to host an event there, and the police and security know how to actually handle South American fans.

Literally none of this issues happened in 2007, 2011, 2015, 2019 or 2021... But hey, those don't count and the Conmebol as a whole is discredited and "should never ever host a tournament again" according to Berhalter lover. This tournament was a disgrace and it being played in the US played a part in it, whether Americans like to admit it or not, but kicking the dog while it is down after being criticized by everyone is the best and easiest way to gain traction. A few reasons. For the plausible deniability side, it was infrastructure and ability to handle the costs following the pandemic. Most South American states who were interested then declined because of the hit their economy took and could not construct, renovate or acquire stadium space adequate for what they wanted. On the realistic side, money. Just money.
@superyoshiverde79113 ай бұрын
Because South Americans view the Americas as 1 Continent. Many Latin Americans have been wanting Copa América to be a Huge Continental Tournament unifying both Confederations, so seeing a Copa América in the USA is not really Abnormal to South Americans (Heck, I wish more Concacaf Hosted Copa América, like México)

I just need to emphasize how absolutely awful the USA vs Uruguay referee, Kevin Ortegas was, and this video needed more than just 10 seconds on the match. The yellow card issue while allowing play to immediately start leading to a near goal, a USA player being yellow carded when an Uruguayan player kicked him, Pulisic having a clear advantage with the ball after a USA player was fouled and the ref blows the whistle as he is charging down the wing, and after all of it the ref refuses to shake Pulisic's hands. I'm the guy who tells people to stop complaining when refs make mistakes in matches and not to make accusations of corruption. You may think that your violence and your flares are "passion" and cool, but the only thing that they are is a way to field hostile from anyone who is not you. Imagine being a parent with two small children trying to watch a football match when suddenly a brawl starts because some drunkards decided to attack someone else. Or trying to get to the stadium and getting crushed because some people without tickets cannot accept that they will have to watch the match from a TV (it is not a life or death situation, seriously, you can see it on TV and nobody is going to die because of it) so they start a riot and crowd crushes that could have easily killed anyone, especially children. And then people justify it like "oh, it is because they are very passionate". Nah, I know a lot of people who are very, very passionate about football, and none would do stuff like that.

This city is.. imagine Detroit but 10x worse.. the entrance of the Colombian team matches were ridiculously low, like 3$. A lot of people showed up, especially for the Argentina vs Colombia match. Most of them were America de Cali fans, which are known for being very intense and passionate. The organization for all the matches I went was very smooth. Lots of police, the entrances of the stadium were far away from it, avoiding crowd crushes and too much density, and I can't recall a single incident. In fact, I remember a drunk fan throwing a bottle at the pitch being arrested inmediately, avoiding a fight or something worse. Therefore, US must be blamed for what they did (or what they did not in this case).
@booradley68323 ай бұрын
The US did its job as hosts. Infrastructure, places to stay, public transport or ability to get to the stadiums were all good. Those are all in the public sphere in some regard. Once it went into the stadiums, where it becomes a private entity, is where things fell apart. The government does not fix turf, regulate officiating or have a bureau of ticket taking and gate management. All of those are private services that CONMEBOL went cheap on to skim some off the top to put in their pockets. The police were at the events- even though I would prefer they were not- but they were not the ones in control of the crowd movement for the event. They attend incase of criminal activity taking place. Its either "Aggressive police state" if we took control and everything went fine or "Irresponsible, negligent" for trusting that a multi billion dollar corporation can do THE ONLY THING THEY ACTUALLY DO competently. As much as America sucks (Hi, American here) this was a no win scenario.
@oniisan64523 ай бұрын
Concerning stadium safety I’ll give you that one, but understand that CONMEBOL wanted full control after what little they recieved in the Copa America Centenario in 2016. So all the accountability falls on them, sponsorships, security, player accommodation, what needs to be understood is this, if another confederation wants to host a tournament, they gotta have a joint agreement with the host confederation.
@Corredor12303 ай бұрын
@@oniisan6452 THIS is the right take. People are blaming Conmebol without considering that this is the first Copa America where things go so wrong in a very long time. Eurocup 2020 Final and the Champions League final in Paris in 2022 also had fans storming the stadium yet you didn’t say UEFA should never host anything ever again back then. You really need to stop being so Eurocentric and also need to stop looking down at South Americans. The blame was both on the US and Conmebol, it’s not just on one entity.

as someone part Uruguayan, not just because we lost, I genuinely hate the way these Colombian fans act. People say that Uruguayan fans started the problem, but even if they did, how could that escalate to the point where Colombian fans attack the players families??? No wonder why Darwin and araujo fought these people. Also remember, a majority of the fans that caused the delay in the final were indeed Colombian. There were some kids that could’ve easily been hurt. Not to support the country, but I heavily do wish that the final would’ve been between Uruguay and Argentina 🇺🇾🇦🇷🙏🏾

This video i know will trigger so many people, here's my take on it: 1. Hosting Copa America in the US was good. Even if they have very little to no "ball knowledge", i assume its a lottery for different countries hosting and is safer than some other regions of south america. If you want an example, F1 host the Sao Paulo GP since the 60s or 70s and recently, the drivers have to be in armoured vehicles for their own safety. Says a lot about the area that they're in. 2. The racist/racism aspect along with the violence isnt okay. It happens everywhere and its terrible but a lot of people on social media that come from South American countries will occasionally say that they're being targeted, as they're from a minority racial demographic, but that does not excuse them or anyone else from being racist, homophobic and violent to anyone else out of the fact your team lost or that you just dont like them. Ive seen it in indycar, where the driver August Canapino got into some controversy but has fans from Argentina sending abhorrent messages to his teammates and other drivers on the grid for getting into crashes with him or beating him on pure pace. Its not on at all. Having players from their country needing to control fans in the fight and protect their families is horrific. 3. The security and staff at the stadiums were terrible and i dont think this is on CONMEBOL for this. Germany hosted the euros and the UK held it in 2020 and there was no issue with security. This is simply that the US, the state's and cities that hold these events were underprepared and not trained to handle such events. They need better training and more policing to aid this which has to come from the US and the local authorities. All CONMEBOL can do is tell them or advise them to do so. 4. Ticket prices. This was just absurd and crazy. The markup on the tickets was way too much and the entry into the stadiums was mismanaged. Im from the UK and we have a bad reputation when it comes to football as we get targeted with hooliganism. It happened at these euros when we had fights with dutch fans. Its not about what regions and places are the most racist and which demographic is the most discriminated and gets the most blame. This is about fixing mistakes such as these and actively removing and kicking out violent and racist behaviour, having a safe place that fans can go and enjoy the beautiful game and to not have tickets costing a mortgage just for a 90 minute game. This all needs to change for the better for the future. This isnt an attack on South America but this should be taken as an example to NOT let this happen for the next Copa America, World Cup or any international football event.

THAT SECOND POINT THOUGH. I'm from LatAm and I know from experience that soccer fans here are some of the most bigoted specimens on Earth. But they're very quick to call out other bigots when they're the ones being targeted. Two wrongs don't make one right

crowd issues are the most infuriating to me. in latin america, if you really wanted to sneak in, you'd also have to run through up to three different barricades, furthest one about three blocks away from the stadium so they can also prevent people with no tickets from parking around. and of course, if they had organized it here, they would have taken notes from 2020 euro incidents: colombia hasn't been in a international final for over twenty years, and they had the same "it might be the only time in our lives we get to see this" mindset the english had, plus tickets were impossibly difficult to get, so it wasn't too hard to guess they'd be overly excited as well and i get it....! not sure where can we draw the line of how much is either conmebol or concacaf to blame, but either way, i seriously doubt the usa can handle this. except peru vs chile maybe, there's not too much *political* or historial rivalry between any conmebol country, so how are they going to handle crowds from those countries with past or on going issues in the worldcup? i wonder

CONMEBOL is indeed an organization through which corruption spreads like cancer. (and here's a hint: Their favorite is not Argentina, it's Brazil for obvious economic reasons, given that it's the biggest, most populous country with the highest valued league in all of CONMEBOL, all they like is money)
@Ahiru773 ай бұрын
So Copa America being harder than Euros isn't because the level of play is that much better, it's because Copa America has a horrible organization, making it extra difficult for the players to survive the tournament at all.

Don’t think it can be understated how bad the officiating was, as a Colombian I was livid during the final because at least one, if not two, penalties were not given on some clear infractions - one went to VAR and call stood, and the other didn’t go to VAR, the ref held the ball for several minutes in stoppage time and then called the game. Argentina also didn’t get plenty of calls their way - the handball could easily be argued - and overall it was a mess of a final that felt like such a disappointment after years of discouragement for our national team
