It's actually becoming the same in Sweden. I feel that "Tjena, läget" is basically the same

As a swede, I hate it when you ask a question you don't want an answer to, even though I know by now. I don't usually elaborate in Swedish either, unless it's with someone close, but I'll at least say Good, or OK, or Could be worse, or A bit so and so, and meassure by their response if they want to hear more. I'll basically never say "Bad" with just a co-worker, cause then it would be expected of them to ask why, and I'd be stuck telling and they'd be stuck listening when neither of us want that.

That's not why they(we) think Americans are superficial. Just so there are no confusion.

And yet to give an American the British equivalent to “how you doing” which is “Alright?” They lose they’re minds.

As an American, not all of us aren’t interested in your answer. Speaking for me personally, I actually do want to know, otherwise I wouldn’t ask. A bunch of people have said that we don’t really want an answer, which seems superficial. But I know plenty of people, myself included, who actually care about the answer and how you actually are. Maybe it’s because I live in the South where everybody cares about everybody, but otherwise, it definitely depends on the setting for whether or not they want a genuine answer.

I've been looking for a way to explain this!! I'm from formally known as, California...now commi-fornia, and I genuinely am asking and interested in "How are you?", Not just a greeting... they're so confused though 😂

Instead of saying “how are you” to a swede, I recommend saying “ey tjena broder har du haft en bra dag elle har du skitit ner dig som i måndags”

Yeah.. a Swede will propably answer with their total medical history from childhood until 4th generation, often including showing off embarassing scars... ;-)

So how do you ask how are you and mean it? xD

I know, I just think it's one of the oddest things about US culture. Why ask a question you don't want an answer to? So, in protest, I go into excruciating detail about how I am. No one asks how I am any more.

English speakers can hear the difference. Foreigners can seldom hear any difference between "How are you!" and "How are you?"
