How Arknights Tier Lists Lie To You

So: With every new event, like Gavial Alter and Ebenholz and the future Mlynar and Texas Alter, people like to know where these goofy goobers are in the meta. Unfortunately, Tier Lists are possibly the worst method to learn this information.
ANNOTATIONS:
First of all, apologies for being 1 day late on the "one video a week" schedule that I have never mentioned until now and will never mention again purely because if I go too long without publishing something I feel deeply uncomfortable. -Tier Lists aren't COMPLETELY useless. Cesith's Tier Lists, for example, tell you exactly what they are for right at the start: They are nothing more than simple, very vague guidance. They are NOT to be followed closely, they serve purely as an extremely superficial overlook of the whole game that you can glance at as a very general idea of the Operators' placements in the meta.
-Gamepress Tier Lists, by far, do the most effort do mitigate every issue presented in this video. They feature various visual indicators relating to various specifications, and a whole "explanation" button that explains to you why that operator is placed there. This effort is very much appreciated, and it surely makes the Gamepress Tier List the best one out there, but the fact you can filter by tier is still absolutely shocking. It defeats the entire point of Class Tier Lists, and makes the whole Gamepress Tier List EXTREMELY misleading.
-Cesith also puts a lot of work in his Tier Lists, but it is ultimately a fruitless endeavor. It will come a point where adding too many annotations to a Tier List just makes it become an analysis video. Staying to Tier Lists will always, inherently, be too superficial for this game. I am certain that, as he himself states, a lot of thought goes into the placements of the operators. However, that thought can never be expressed in a Tier List.
-Despite some jokes in the video, I don't truly think people look at tier lists because they are bad at the game. I'm sure some do, but I know for a fact the biggest reason is time. Arknights is probably the one popular gacha that wants the most time from you. The game is complex, so ideally you'd need to examine and watch reviews for the individual operators, but often people just don't have the time for it. A Tier List is much more accessible, takes around 100 times less time to consume, and technically gives out the same information.

Some of the guides seem a bit weird to me, too. Gamepress tells to use Skadi's fast redeploy module and skill 2. Isn't she just totally outclassed by Surtr and many others in that role? Use the other module in an abyssal squad + skill 3 and she gets 12K health and almost 3K att. Block 1 is still a problem, tho.

@@BenightedAlizar Skadi is a pseudo fast-redeploy and Surtr is not. You can deploy Skadi with module twice as often as Surtr and in most cases Skadi s2 does better ST dps. Even with Texas Alter being as broken as she is, Skadi is still used for fast redeploy over her Abyssal support module the majority of the time if you bring the Abyssal Hunters package. Even if other ops beat her in some places she’s still the best physical damage fast redeploy who’s also very tanky. Often having better survivability than NTR S2 because of other AH talents and available 3x as often as NTR if you don’t have a Kazi op to reduce her redeploy timer.

They tell you how to use them assuming you still want to use given operator, regardless if you have better alternative or not. Personally, in an AK tier list, I would use XYZ axes: X = Power ceiling, or the equivalent of that in whatever role they're performing Y = Ease of use, or how easy it is to approach that power ceiling Z = Niche, basically how commonly you'll be able to effectively make use of an operator to an extent they're an upgrade over other options. And even then, a tier list would be wildly inaccurate. But at the very least, it'll accomplish what a tier list is usually for, which is to decide what characters to invest in for general content, especially during early game. Personally however, I look at tier lists purely for entertainment purposes. I wanna see people validate my choice to not build a character because I don't see myself using them, and praise the characters I've invested in, basically telling me I made the right choices. In other words, vanity

Like you said tier lists are for general content, and in that regard they are very accurate. Build any of the S+ characters as a new player and it's going to be a god send for you. It is likely help you overcome whatever stage was giving you trouble. You don't need the niche analysis when you are just trying to clear general content. Chalter, SA, thorns, ETC are going to be good in 99.9999999% of all general content stages. Heck I feel like tier lists can be made even simpler to two categories: characters you should build if you are having trouble and everyone else.

I think tier list does have a good reason to exist, that is for the newbies. At the beginning, the game gives you quite a lot of resource to roll, allowing you to reach 15, 20 then 30 and so on fairly quickly. However, this ends up with the newbie staring at a roster of maybe 20 operators, confused about what to invest in. Should they level up the 5 star instead of the 4 star, because in gacha games, the higher rarity units tend to be better? Would levelling up a bad unit significantly hampers their progress? What roles/branches are necessary? And how many do they need? It is unreasonable to expect a newbie to find the answer to these questions by checking out each operator analyses, not even short reviews as they simply are not interested enough in the game to spend so much time researching. Back in the beginning, I was intimidated by having 20 operators, many of which can have 2 skills to consider, and somewhat lost interest in the game, then only started to really like Arknights after reading guides and consulting friends. Tier lists fulfill the newbie's need for quick and easy to understand information, allowing them to reach the point when they are used to the game mechanics and are able to form their own views towards the operators. I personally find the Gamepress tier list to be fairly accurate and helpful for general content, and they also state that operators are not strictly considered within archetypes and the list is no substitute for game knowledge.

Yup the funny thing is that people that complain about tier lists are the hardcore players that have reached end game content. Tier lists are not meant for you. Heck why are you even looking at tier lists when you already understand the game game really well. Tier lists are meant for new players or casuals, and I have never heard any causal gamer complain about tier lists.

I kinda agree, but on the other hand the amount of information you must know to reliability decide if an operator is worth investing , is kinda huge. You must know, operator stats, skills numbers, relativity within the branch and class, useful interactions, relativity when compared to other classes, investment returns , the difficulty of use, how well does op fit with your composition etc. So even though tier lists kinda tell you next to nothing to the overall value of an op, for a new player it may be helpful to have some guidelines. The system needs overhaul though, if its up to me at least 3 graphs of measurement. 1 power score compated within branch, 2 investment score (there may be better ops within the branch, but do you need a better op right now or at all), 3 overall power score compared to other classes. Plus some notes of drawbacks and advantages.

For all the insight this video shares about the many flaws inherent to how tier lists work, it fails to see the inherent flaw in its own analysis. You don't compare tier lists to a theoretical "perfect" way of ranking operators. You compare it to other available options. What would players use to get an idea of the pull-value an operator brings if not tier lists? They could use their own personal judgement, they could spend hours watching videos of CN players to see how operators perform, they could empty their wallets pulling *all* characters so they don't miss out on the powerful ones, they could spend hours and hours reading wikis and running numbers in spreadsheets... or they could take a couple of seconds to look at a tier list. In a gacha game where players have limited resources to pull characters, the ability to gauge an operator's pull value is important. A tier list is not a fully accurate representation of that value, but it's cost-performance ratio can't be beat. Like it or not, for a recreational activity, getting 80% accurate info for no effort is better than 100% accurate info for much work. You could make a 3 hour magnum opus on the deepest of deep dives into the many flaws of tier lists, but people will still use them if they're perceived to be the best option. The way to get people to stop using tier lists is to show a better, more convenient alternative.

Hmm. At the end of the day, I think tierlists are the casual player's tool. Like, if you get to the point of properly utilizing Aak and Weedy then you kinda don't need them anymore. Also, if they can't trust tierlists, and they can't trust operator "should you build" videos, how will the normies actually know what to build? At some point it is ok to let the nuances go and measure a unit's "average level of strength" against another. Players like us who have been playing this game for who knows how long will be "in the know" and have info about an operator's strengths and weaknesses, wether it is useful to build them or not. The casuals usually only have the tierlists to go by. So, in conclusion, tierlists youtuber delivers a speech about why tierlists are not that bad actually XD.

I think one thing that tier lists have a hard time addressing is team synergy, which is an important part of this game. Aside from the obvious thing of buffers and debuffers which inherently benefits every operator in the game, each operator has some synergy with at least one other operator. Lavalter for example works well with both high health allies for her S2 and slowers with her S1. Not to mention she pairs well with Hibiscus alter too. The tier list makers may put thought into synergies when making their lists, but it’s extremely hard to bring that idea into them. Another thing is class tier lists. More often than not the 6 stars are always gonna be at the top because they are inherently designed to be better than every operator in the lower rarities. No other Splash Caster can summon their own melee units to block enemies for a long period of time like Dusk, and no other Splash Caster has the insane crowd control potential Mostima has. Even the 5 stars are iffy to compare to each other since they are designed to work in separate scenarios when their skills are involved. Lavalter is good in cases where attack speed down tags are present as her S2 is not effected by them. Skyfire is good against enemies with annoying damage gimmicks that can be stunned. I don’t have Leonhart so I can’t really comment on him, but I’ve heard that his S2 is pretty useful.

Ngl, when I started playing arknights I just relied on tier lists to see who I should build, but I never asked myself why are they so good? Now I just watch videos reviewing one unit instead which actually helps me learn more about the operator rather than brainlessly following a tier list.

To be fair i personally use the tierlidt more as a lil pointer to characters that are worth to build I always make a point to read through the reasoning why they're put there and check out the skills for myself. AK had alot of units, without a proper direction id just be raising random operators that mightve just been plainstupid investments I do agree that most ppl do not want to learn a stage and just skip it usually, i do pride myself on the fact that i try to learn and master the mechanics, but i do too skip them sometimes due to being really busy

Hey, Mostima definitely has a pretty sizeable niche with her level 3 module now, it basically makes enemies just stop moving for the whole duration of her S3. And Dusk, with S1 against a sufficiently big group of enemies, can even output DPS that surpasses the likes of Eyja. Straight up saying they're not worth building is kinda going against the entire point of this video. That said, the vid was overall very entertaining and you have a lovely voice!

As a newer player, my biggest problems with AK are the learning curve and time investment needed for it. To mitigate that, I've been using Kyo's low star guides and trying to substitute stronger units where I think plausible. With some reasonable results. But there always comes the moment the game asks for one of the following (esp. during Events): Higher stats, specific archetypes/kits or a wider array of ops than are accessible to me. Raising specific Operators is an endless whack-a-mole that might be "fine" with 3* but can quickly spiral out of control as 4* and 5* ones find their way to RI. So some form of guidance might be needed if you don't want to hang over character analyses for hours. And with well over 200 Units to choose from, I cannot blame people for resorting to Tier Lists, as misguiding as they can be. Kyo's videos have improved on that front as he is using his commentary to explain the requirements and who could work instead. Another whole can of worms is the common soluton of [just borrow E2-90 6* Operator] to avoid, not solve, the three problems I mentioned above. Which you are more than likely to encounter once you decide to look for ways to beat that stage that's been annoying you for 3 days now. Be it Anni 3 or later EX and Secret Stages during Events. I can't tell you how much I had to scroll to find an Anni 3 guide that didn't ask for specific unit xy at at least E1-Max you'll never use again. I'm fine with those kinds of requirements in principle, but they can be extremely demotivating. I'm happy with my Kal'tsit, but sometimes I wish I would have gotten that SA or Mudrock instead.

I just want to critize kukki opinion on "arknight player not want to learn, they just want to be told what to do". On that matter, AK is really challenging game and i like it, but sometimes i just can't spend 2+ hours playing game, because some people have other things that better to do maybe learning something new like language, new skill or talk to girls(?), Anyway but i do agree on kukki opinion that the better guide might be explaining how the mechanic works or how the skills works but then again, in time of need, we really need that instant guide of how to beat the stage

My only problem with this view point is that as we are all playing the most cursed genre (Gacha), we do kinda wanna be capable of picking and choosing operators to go for lol, it's why we still want tier lists despite them not being perfect; we don't want to use all our resources picking operators just cause of their looks and finding out that maybe they don't mesh with our play style. I do think linear tier lists aren't helpful in the least, but you definitely want to continue to read breakdowns of characters and their kits to figure out just what might work for you!

i get where you re commin from,im a noob in the game (i play "serious" made for a month now but i joined the game 3 months ago) and i h8 guides(take all the fun out of the game),that said i really like watching tier lists or unit reviews cause the arknights community is by far the most "unwilling to help noobs" group i ve ever tried to get a reply for a game question so the tier lists and reviews were the only help i could get starting the game (and only 1 player in a youtube vid that told me "get mudrock from the shop instead of waiting for mountain or thorns")

How about a tier list base on around the progression of the player? We have new chapter stage with new mechanic, annihilations with new mechanic, roughlike, sss and cc with new risk to combo for new challenge for each team, hell maybe a tierlist for which operators can work together in the base to get full profit. Most operators will have a place to fit somewhere in the progresion, for example: + 1 star and 2 stars can be a good starter for many early stage consider that robot are not in deploy costs and they are all easy to build up to lvl 30 to unlock talent, which some 2op can be used to get an early stall if you use a high cost team. And we have durin and f12 with their dodge talent is a niche that can be workout to bait enemy range damage, quite good for early ops. + 3 stars and 4 stars can be good for mid to some early-late stage like ch10 which can be use with 3 and 4 stars. Roughlike focus 3 stars to save hope to use on more powerful operators, and 4 stars can be a easily upgrade to E2 M6 and have module to buff them to tackle sss and cc like 5 stars and 6 stars, make them a easy replaceable until you got a better ones. + 5 star and 6 star aside from being stronger and more variables in many situations, they also have some niche talent and a skill from " holy damage go brr" to "I'm gonna have a field trip with this ones" to make your team strategies differ from others. - Aside from many popular operators that useful like Thorn, SA, Eyja, Mountain, Kroos, Myrle, .... then that mostly how general operators work: some good some bad and some that I just don't want to exist ( Eha video on Frostleaf ) and powercreep is unavoidable. And you just mention in the video that resource are limited, we always have to make a choice on what to build and what don't. So a tier list can go satify most general content is good enough consider this is a side game with some tryhard content, not everyone is invested enough to the mechanic, let alone try thing by themselve.

Yeah the tier list is varied so heavily. I have units that are actually supposedly bad but are actually really good when used properly. Just take gummy, it allows me to not worry about needing a second healer on a range tile in many levels where enemy damage isn't so extreme. She will heal a good chunk and can stall enemies and deal damage to them. She can be used to nuke damage sometimes (unless it's instakill). Every operator have their strength and weaknesses. All of them will operate very differently based on your strategy and the stage your engaging. Probably why they rely on you the doctor, because only you will know how the stage will be played out based on your current squad.

I agree, Objective tierlists cannot work in Arknights, but Subjective ones can because it's based on an opinion or a simple metric like drip or cooking ability. The one kind of tierlist I'd like to see is a "priority to level" tierlist for newer players that functions inversely to a regular one, with 3 stars being at the top, 4 stars a tier below, and 5/6 stars at the bottom. This is less a "top is better then bottom" but more a "at this stage of the game, focus on these operators first", both because 1) lower rank means a lot less investment needed so you can quickly get a more well-rounded squad for tackling the early to mid stages compared to wasting all your resources on that one top tier 6 star but leaving you crippled in all other areas, as well as 2) allowing you actually learn what each archetype can and can't do, deepening your knowledge of the game and learning that there's always more than 1 way to solve a problem in a game as complex as this. The only real 'tierlist' part in this would come in the placement of the 5/6 stars at the bottom, with more generalist and easy to use operators (BP, Eyja, SA, La Pluma, Mountain, etc) being placed higher than more specialized and harder to use operators (Aak, Warfarin, Weedy, etc), though at that point you should already have learned that the lower placed ops still have their strengths because you've used their lower rank archetypes.

Also, another thing Gamepress does well is their newbie tier list, where they actually put the early game units above stronger ones because they'll give you more power for your buck when you're low on resources, plus they actually write which archetypes are generally used and which are niches so you don't have the 'they both are S tiers so they are of the same usability'. Shame they don't also put the archetype info on their general tier list, would definitely help people that are missing the fact that there are multiple tier lists on the page.

The most convincing tips for those who just got introduced or in the early to mid game are to simply: -Diversify while trying to M3d various 4 stars and 6 stars operators (I mean gummy is still underrated, but at least myrtle got slowly reconsidered to be replaced by Cantabilek I guess), especially with really cool modes akin to Integrated Strategies will be proven very good -Ignore the vast majority 5 stars operators (aside from Specter, Ptilopsis and perhaps Lappland for early chapters) -All while anticipating the most convenient future operators (not all of them, heck not even majority of them yet a number of them can be a better starting initiative for investments and drives to saving those orundumbs instead wasting it on silly bait banners), as we got 5-6 months span of foresights from CN servers -Oh also if one does have busy lives (yeah shocker, despite the gacha fandoms' memes but we gotta accept more newcomers from many backgrounds), then seeing guides won't hurt anyone besides those sweaty elitists with only snobby memes to paddle and none of real life achievements to dazzle, as it's mainly single player game (albeit very timed with the events), all while been months since the last time we got legit multiplayer mode, and it was so fun yet hilarious to experienced back then even with those suffering high ping lol, but that was a long time ago and it should've been rerun often because it's funny playing with strangers or with friends

You have pointed out most Arknights players don't want to learn, but missed the point these same players also watch guides. So for the Thorns in CC example, when these players watch CC guides, they'd know who to deploy for a particular CC. edit: Most players aren't whales, with unlimited resource/time. Tier list is not perfect, I'd welcome a simulator where I can select a setup and test an operator and see how he/she/it performs. Alas, I don't have that, so I will consult tier list and read the details on the operator that piqued my interest.

I very much agree with you. Arknights is not hard to put units in a tierlist. Like his Aak example if an op is only really used in an extremely small situation aka anything over risk 20 in CC or a meme KZbin vod you are a bad unit. And the Kroos example I feel is worst, she isn't used in SSS a for her power or skills. She's cheap and even in that situation she still loses to both Justice Knight and Rangers and is tied with Adnachiel at 9 dp.
