This is nonsense. My husband and I are vaccinated. Our son has severe immunodeficiency, is unable to build inmunity to vaccines. Us and other people getting the vaccine does not protect him at all. It does not prevent of transmission. Why are we lauding a vaccine as if it protect others and shoving it down peoples throats? Why were we promised updated vaccines meanwhile the flu vaccine is updated better, more often and aggressively rolled out? I'm sick of hearing about it preventing severe disease while transmission is being ignored. I'm sick of people pretending their vaccination status protects the people I love. Lies like this are putting vulnerable people at risk. N95 and updated more effective vaccine now please.

@@mortenrl1946 It was always branded as negative ion. You're telling me that if I search for positive ion I can get a "massage pen" full of radioactive cobalt? I want one now. Already have the negative ion thorium one. It's usually a laugh handing it to friends and asking them what they think it's for. When you say it's full of radioactive thorium they usually freak the fuck out. The metal casing blocks most of the radiation and short term exposure is harmless. I still keep it in a labelled ziplock bag with both caution symbols printed off and tossed in with it and then inside a small labelled metal box at the opposite end of my house and the furthest away from any people for safety reasons, but having someone muse over what it is for a few minutes is always a laugh when you tell them it's full of thorium salts. The fact that it's sealed in metal and then inside a metal box means that the only real danger from it is gamma decay products and its gamma emissions are minimal, barely above background and an old radium dial (which you can get on plenty of antiques sites or even the most common online auction site (YT censor bit deletes all posts with the name of it in my posts so let's just call it "eshore"/"iBeach") would eclipse it in terms of gamma output. There is a large "do not open item" warning inside the ziplock as having a sealed source is one thing, having thoria everywhere is a mini Goiana cleanup effort. Unless I'm using it for a prank it's also marked with a sharpie (you can wipe that off with an alcohol swab) warning anyone to not open it as well as having the trefoil badly drawn on top. You'd need to be aiming for a Darwin award if you wanted to open it. If I have kids the box will be locked.

7:24 This goes both ways, too. Far too many researchers at the university I used to work hard convinced themselves that, since they were educated medical doctors 30 years ago, even if they spent the last decades becoming experts in one niche field of medicine, they are now still experts in all other fields of medicine until proven otherwise, showing only slight remorse when being told off by the office whose job it is to know that stuff. It's so unbelievably common to think you're actually knowledgeable in something you've heard about once or twice, logical fallacies had to be defined to cover this unfortunate tendency. At least, I think scientists are slightly better at hiding their pride when being held responsible for the things they say, e.g. when talking to a journalist or making an official public statement.

As a former national-level athlete in my sport and a current scientist I happily admit to the concept of "superstition to 'control' stuff normally outside my control". Obviously I knew it was bogus, but the simple act of ritually eating garlic+oranges and drinking a herb-concoction (contained echinea puprurea extract so maybe not entirely useless at reducing symptoms of colds?) at least gave me the peace of mind to have done something to make me wake up OK next morning.

It's called "autoshaping" and it's one of the simplest operant conditioning models. Works on animals and in humans it's the basis of superstitious behavior and beliefs. In essence: 1) I do X 2) by chance, or simply, with no relation to event X, Y happens and it is pleasurable 3) after some trials (in humans, one is often enough), the subject will do X again, as if X caused Y (Unless you are aware of this happening or have learned a more logical way or Thinking, you'll asume X had something to do with Y).

In my home country Germany, a considerable number of doctors are also advertising homeopathy and other unproven (and in some cases obviously nonsensical) treatments. A few years ago, a group of lung doctors made headlines by wrongly claiming that air pollution wasn't actually a problem in German cities. Of course the overwhelming majority of doctors are advising everyone to get vaccinated against Covid, but there is a vocal minority of actual doctors helping to fuel the anti-vax crowd. How can I as a potential patient be certain that my doctor's advice is based on evidence, not quackery?

Well of course! A quiet shift means less potential suffering from all parties involved. It's ultimately just a psychological prank our brains play on us though. A tangent of our pattern seeking programming connecting dots that aren't actually connected. Walking under a ladder is genuinely an unsafe behavior, not actually "unlucky". And if you drop and break a mirror, you're probably predisposed to other clumsy behaviors and will find plenty of evidence convincing you of your "bad luck". A lot of superstitions seem to have been started for understandable reasons, but were ultimately wrongly attributed to unrelated events.

I keep telling people! Wellness is the pseudoscience that actually infests the people who should medically know better! It gets around the loop hole by focusing on minor benefits that might appear in studies rather than just pretending they don't exist. As a disabled person it's extremely frustrating. When I'm told to "have yoga" for my TBI issues it feels like I'm being talked down to. Instead of listening to the drug injury I acquired from a prescription and trying to understand that drug better, I'm told to do shit like Yoga! Like that's going to help much!

I've had covid three times and have never had any severe symptoms and have probably got a better immunity and antibodies than some people that have the vaccine. Now what is the point in me personally being vaccinated? Will it prevent me spreading it to someone vulnerable. NO. Will it affect how that vulnerable person is affected by the virus. NO. So they only people that need to get the vaccine are the vulnerable and thats a personal choice. It's like forcing someone else to wear armbands in a swimming pool just because someone else cant swim! Wear them yourself! Happy days!

Medical doctor from Serbia here with experience working with COVID patients. My two cents. It's important to note that Serbia has suffered catastrophically during this pandemic. Who hasn't though? But hear me out. Due to inept initial response of our government (which is, it should be added, quite authoritarian and nationalistic), which had brushed away this illness as "the funniest virus", a large percentage of people simply paid no heed to this from the start. Combined with illogical prevention measures, non-existent vaccination campaign, constant flip-flopping of our politicians and chief doctors (I hardly consider them as doctors anymore) on the public health issue and manipulation of statistics (officially, around 12,000 people died - but there is research by independent journalists which points out that the likely number is three times that), and you get a complete catastrophe where only half the population is vaccinated, health system (which was barely working even prior to this) has fallen apart and trust in science and medicine is at its all time low (to be fair though, those last two points are issues way older than this pandemic). And then you add Djokovic into the mix. His vocal skepticism and rejection of modern Western medicine has been incredibly harmful to our efforts in sustaining the spread of COVID, chiefly through rejection of the vaccine as something harmful, unnatural and unnecessary. You must understand that the support this man has among a large number of Serbs is incredible. The dude is almost a messianic figure. To be clear, Djokovic is just the cherry on top of a societal, medical, political and dare-I-say moral cataclysm which has befallen this country (as if we didn't have enough of those before). The chief blame is with our top political figures (some of which are, as Rohin mentioned, rubbing their shoulders with Novak) and various "doctors" and charlatans who are behind the efforts to battle this disease, while really being there only for their personal profit and political influence. Djokovic as such is certainly a symptom of a wider societal problem in Serbia, but also of the world's problems in general, and this video illustrates that quite well. But just remember that this is a man who has actively supported the harmful ideas which have led to death of more than tens of thousands of his countrymen, not to mention the horrible death toll worldwide. He deserves no sympathy.

Hey Doc, fellow Serbian here. After reading this, I felt something clicked inside big time. First of all, at the time of the Covid pandemic I was living in Asia, and had very close observation to how the governments and general public of various Asian countries dealt with the first wave. When talking to my friends, pointing to the potential severity of the situation (knowing what happened in Hong Kong back in 2008 with SARS) I kept getting this weird dismissive attitude, relativisation. I was in a kind of disbelief myself that it could go this far. So, with it came the unintentional medical and scientific angle of discussion. The more we all learned about it, the more we kinda naturally fell away from the scientific consensus. But to then discover that there were such extreme opinions based in what Rohin calls as quackery, pseudoscience and straight denial of proven medical science, just made me speechless. What you wrote here made me remember those recent times and that state of mind as well as that there must a clear stance on what you represent and which principals you follow. Now, I can't stand in defense of what Novak is preaching and represents no matter how much respect I have for the guy sport wise. I can't dissmis him either, he is doing some things right regarding nutrition and physical conditioning, but man I just can't tolerate this delusional bullshit him and his wife are blabbering about. It's so much harm done to the efforts of people that were fighting the real fight. There is so much nuance about the whole issue, but this made me clear things up a bit. Thank you for your hard work during the toughest times.

Thanks for making this video. It's an important issue to talk about and I'm glad you're able to simultaneously hold and express these two beliefs - first Government and medical responses may be (and sometimes are) imperfect and second that there are far more pernicious influences, people lying whether or not they are aware of it and crippling the public trust in one of our best tools to fight SARS-CoV-2. I live in Australia and there's plenty of issues with how the government (state and federal) has handled the pandemic and there are some very disappointing legal mechanisms they've used to punish Djokovic (you can agree with the outcome but dislike the last minute cancellation and inconsistency by the Government). But my sympathy for Djokovic ends at the point where he pushes or indirectly promotes vaccine scepticism. Just know that for every unreachable person who "unsubscribed" or "wellness over pharma" commenter there's probably a dozen or more people like me who enjoy your content and want to live a critically minded but empathetic life. This is part of the refusal to see success or failure as marginal outcomes determined by tiny margins, and often outside of the sportsman's control. This highly superstitious nature leads to believing any old guff.......as Djokovic demonstrates clearly. The other thing which characterises sporstmen is a very high level of self-confidence. Sport acts like natural selection on those who don't have it, and so the successful have it in spades. This leads to them never accepting they are wrong.........as Djokovic demonstrates clearly. You can show Djokovic the science until the cows come home, but the arrogance of sportsmen, and this one in particular, is never going to let him accept that he's wrong.

As I believe Rohin has said before; some of the only reasons you shouldn't get the vaccine is if you are allergic to any of the ingredients or are male, 18-24 and only offered the Moderna vaccine. If he wants to compete in a country then he has to follow the countries rules, he did not. He is getting punished for it. Do his organs adjust for time zones and daylight saving time? How does he get a clock into his lungs?
@vaska00762
@vaska00762 2 жыл бұрын
Actually, they do in a way. It's the circadian rhythm. The human body has a sort of internal clock, and when we do travel across time zones, we get jetlagged, because the circadian rhythm needs to adjust. As for daylight savings, that also affects the circadian rhythm. It's why it's often reported that a lot of people fall ill whenever the clocks go forward - the body hates losing an hour of sleep. The concept that the various internal organs repair themselves at certain times of the day has a certain basis in truth. But that's about it. The thing with traditional Chinese medicine is that it has a bit of a basis in truth... It's actually why in Japan and China, traditional medicine is actually something medical doctors are trained in. You end up with a doctor who will prescribe medication... and traditional herbal teas and exercises. The logic being that the two are meant to work hand in hand. Yet... you don't get people saying that the medical system in East Asia is full of quacks.
@gausscone
@gausscone 2 жыл бұрын
@@vaska00762 There are people saying that and it is full of quacks. Asia gets passes all the time for stuff like xenophobia and other more immediate horrors, you know this. @vaska00762
@vaska00762 2 жыл бұрын
@@gausscone quacks are everywhere, yes. My point was more that at least in Asia, non quacks will make use of everything available to them. Someone recovering from major surgery may, for example, also receive acupuncture treatment which help speed up recovery and help with rehabilitation. The acupuncture ends up promoting blood flow and help alleviate pain. Aromatherapy is being used in things like palliative care, as the smells stimulate blood flow in the amygdala, reducing the need for strong painkillers or sedatives. Indeed, a lot of medical research has been conducted in Asia on mice and humans which do indicate that, not only do many traditional methods have genuine physiological effects on the body, but also that when combined with modern medicine, the patient outcomes are actually better. Plus, we're all forgetting that there's still the psychosomatic aspect to everything. It's why placebo control groups are always present in drug trials. If you think something is going to make you better, there's a possibility that the brain will make the individual feel better. Quacks differ from what I've described, because they reject modern medical science instead of integrating it into pre-existing knowledge. A quack would probably say that a macrobiotic diet will cure cancer. A properly trained East Asian oncologist will go through the procedures of chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery, but still also give the patient traditional medicine or treatments to help with the side effects of chemo or radiotherapy and assist with the healing and rehabilitation following surgery. If the patient gets the right treatment and feels better, and adverse effects are mitigated, then what's the matter?

there's a lot of pseudoscience medicine quackery here in Indonesia. and a lot of the believer is actually people desperate for medical treatment. because of high medical intervention cost compared to their income or chronically ill patient that desperate enough to be cured. heck even the government funded medical insurance deemed to high for them although relatively cheap compared to the other private insurance. The problem is most of them are in middle to low income household, I'm not blaming them for not opt in into the government funded med insurance, because they barely scraping the barrel for feeding themself. and also quackery practice that "popular" or have some wo wo magic to heal someone is more convincing rather than professional doctor advice and even create a disbelief for proper medical intervention. Some influencers even promote those wo wo wellness stuff as a complete alternative for medication. and most of them that follows end up paying more in those "alternate medicine" rather than spending those money on the insurance and receive little to no benefit other than placebo.

It seems that I am not much of a Djoković follower. But I think you are misinformed by your friend about Novak being a nationalist. For example, on one tournament judge told him he is Croat, and apologized later on but at some point Đoković told him no problem, that is similar. We Serbs had a long history of conflict with Croats. During floods in 2014 he helped financially and morally all the countries in Western Balkans. I don't know what he thinks in private, but in public he has shown no nationalism against neighboring countries as far as I know. I don't see why it is relevant or wrong that Novak is close to Orthodox Church ... Being close to the political regime is bad for us in Serbia, but still not relevant to your video. After all, he can't fight against everybody, like ATP. Beside that I like the tone of your videos, and this one also.

There were fudbal, basketball matches at the same time, concerts etc. He is definitely into woo woo but that tournament was not as crazy as it looked from the outside. Or if it is crazy it's craziness that was supported by the state and by the experts in Serbia (such as there are). As for being nationalistic, he might say a "patriotic" thing here and there, which wouldn't even raise an eyebrow in say Britain, but Balkans being Balkans you might get an impression that he's particularly nationalistic, which he is not, and certainly not chauvinistic (his mother is Croatian, his father is Serbian he, never said anything even slightly bad against any group of people whatsoever)

I like and agree with all of the stuff in the video! But because I have a bit of a contrarian streak, here is a perhaps unpopular take: there is also a class of influencers and pundits who beat people over the head with science. Rohin, I feel like you’ve covered this in the past, even related to COVID. Some people, myself included, turn to a general version of “wellness” because of bad experiences with treatments that are backed by science. My experience taking antidepressants was abysmal, and there were not a lot of clinicians who cared. I rely much more reliably on yoga and meditation - which I definitely would NOT use to cure a viral illness, but do use to “cure” my anxiety and depression. Am I a QAnon nut? There are plenty of pundits that think so, and I don’t think those people are actually helpful. Less harmful overall than the actual antivax crowd, but they still remind me of the terror and indifference I felt when I was pretty much forced onto an antidepressant when no one wanted to actually help me in crisis. :(

There are so many sad things about all of this, also about your take on the whole thing. First of all, one of the saddest things is one of your first lines in the video, and I'll tell you exactly why: I went about Googling the exact name of the sports' commentator and the exact quote of his that shocked the public sphere in Serbia when it came to Novak and his career, which came out last year. What's crazy about it is that I couldn't even dig up the guy's name, because too many different people had said the same thing. Something along the lines of Novak hipothethycally being able to win all the world's records in tennis, but still, in their view, he would never be GOATS, that they would still prefer Federrer over him. And fair enough, people's tastes are people's tastes when it comes to sportsmen; however, it would still be an undeniable fact that even in the zenith of his career, Federrer didn't come close to having the kind of competition that Đoković has had at the very beginning of his, not to mention all of the other records Novak has beaten him in. All the while having the audiences most of the times against him. Maybe it's my Serbian paranoia, or just an observation, but I just can't help but feel it has something to do with his nationality. Juuuuuust like a taad bit. The second sad thing is, even in all this, we are actually discussing what Novak should or shouldn't put in his own body. And yes, he absolutely should push back against disclosing his medical records to anyone, as we all should. The third sad thing about this whole thing is that his (at least this once) healthy dose of skepticism towards the COVID19 shots, even before the vaccine rollout itself, was completely justified, at least in the healthy, within reason, sense. So what if he expressed his skepticism? We all knew what the technology of most of the available ones was going to be, before they were rolled out. Guess what too? My first cousin is a Dr of Pharmacology, works at a lab in St Petersburg, and has called this vaccine rollout an insult to the intelligence. That's what I thought as well, with having no degree in medical feild whatsoever. And also guess what? Dr Robert Malone, The inventor of the mRNA technology has expressed concern over it's mass usage, not to mention jabbing of children. I particularly like his quote that this is the first time in history that ineffectiveness of a medicine is being blamed on the ones who didn't take it. I don't want to, nor feel I need to further illustrate my point in why I think Novak's position is completely justifiable. Now, I do personally despise his New Age beliefs and practices, but that shouldn't be as important when it comes to this matter per say, because it encroaches on argumentum ad hominem at this point. Attacking his personal lifestyle, rather than what his actual position on this subject is, to which he is as much entitled to as anyone else. And possiby the saddest thing about what you said is that your ignorant Serbian friend has made a connection to his Church-supported media presence with all of his wacky, culty, wellness-culture-tier ways. Your Serbian friend should, regardless of her own beliefs, be educated enough to know that first of all, the term "church" doesn't mean the same, run-of-the-mill, ~500 year old Lutheran heresy type of a deal, even if it also includes high-church Anglican ones, the way you and the most of the West percieve it to be, but an actual ~2000 year old Apostolic institution that is the Eastern (in this case, Serbian) Orthodox Church, which even the most ignorant on the matter, ubeducated about and blissfully unaware of, Serbian woman should very well know is wholly incompatible with vegan, wellness and New Age practices the Đokovićs vomit most of the time to the press and the public space. On that note, here's hoping that the pompeousness and overall sleaziness of Federrer's persona doesn't detract from people actuay taking his opinion as seriously as they would at least a bit more likeable character than his own, as much of your pretentious self-percieved wittyness level would hopefully not detrct from at least taking into account your overall point and your position on whichever matter you wished to make your opinion known about. Alas, here's also a friendly reminder to take your obligatory amount of copium with your C19 shot, as well as boost the seething part a little more. You know, for the empathy's sake, for the overall public health, and your grandma too.

One thing you didn't mention is that sometimes some of the wellness mumbo jumbo turns out to be correct. I started listening to your interview video, where medical marijuana was mentioned. I remember poopooing all the Facebook conspiracy theory posts about the wonders of medical marijuana and how it's being suppressed - only to find out a few years later that most of them were true. I don’t find his claims about therapies have any credible evidence at all, but he raises plenty of good points about the pandemic in general and policies that have been harmful. However, the majority of what he said on Joe Rogan was demonstrably false. Malone is a harder one. I’ve also watched his interview and found myself much less able to understand whether what he was saying was correct. Again, many sensible and good points. The more research I’ve done, the more I’ve connected some dots that he’s clearly lied (ie not just had a difference of opinion, but actively lied ) about some aspects, which makes me suspicious of other things he’s said, even if I’m comparatively less knowledgeable than him.
