To understand augmented reality you first need to understand the word augment: to make greater by adding something. And what’s being added is a digital layer. Therefore augmented reality is making the world that already exists greater by adding a digital layer to it.
@seasidecardreadings2 жыл бұрын
this makes sense. but please explain to me a little bit more. is it a see-through tiny flat sheet in front of a painting, for example? and it is switched on and off with electricity. when it is on, there is a digital layer to the physical. when it is off, then one sees only the physical as it actually is. secondly, if I hold my phone, in front of the painting, I will be able to see something else when looking at the phone screen than what I will be seeing with my naked eye?

I’ve been researching on AR and I think the implications and applications of AR are astounding. I see all the positives of the use of AR, however haters of AR see the negatives and call it invasive. How do you think AR when mainstreamed through the inventions such as Apple Glass, will affect daily life? Do you think the bad outweighs the good? For me, personally, I see too much good out of this invention and see the world of possibilities that it opens.

Augmented reality is a mix of real world view (what we see) and computer generated images layered ontop of that view, typically displayed by a device fitted with a camera, such as a phone. The most popular example I can think of being Pokemon Go which uses real world view with pokemon layered on top of that which you catch.

What's interesting about AR is the program is basically building a game world in real-time based off the real world but it's invisible to the user. Only digital things they want to see in that invisible game world show up. What's also cool is that means it has the potential to remove physical things through the glasses as well. Take that monitor in the video. The game world knows what's behind it so it can project that over top of the actual monitor to make you think the monitor isn't there anymore. That has to have some crazy unknown uses :) That being said we can see how processing power is key to all of this. How fast these game worlds can be built and update in real-time is the difference between a seamless smooth experience and getting motion sickness.

Good question. There are several ways to trigger an AR experience: 1) The device detects a horizontal or vertical surface. This is used when your AR experience is just looking for any surface that meets the alignment criteria. This is usually referred to as a PlaneAnchor. 2) The device detects a pre-programmed image. This is usually referred to as an ImageAnchor. In the case of Apple AR, the image can be static or moving. ARKit does both detection and tracking of 2D images. 3) The device detects a pre-scanned 3D objects. This will be an ObjectAnchor. Currently ARKit only supports detection, not tracking. Meaning the object cannot move. 4) The device detects a geospatial reference, which can also be referred to as an ARGeoAnchor. This is great for placing AR content or experiences in the real-world (for world-scale AR). This is however only supported in a few major cities at the moment. 5) And finally the device can also detect any face in the frame and overlay content on it. This is referred to as a FaceAnchor. A little note: everything in the AR scene is usually attached to an Anchor. That’s why most of these have postfix -Anchor. Hope that helps! Best, Ryan

Great clarity & highly articulate. Love the videos! I'm excited for the day AR glasses become consumer-ready. Do you think SLAM could be used for inward eye-tracking to function as a cursor for selection? Also, would wifi-6 tether between glasses and watch enable computation to happen remotely to keep the form factor small and sleek? In theory, we wouldn't need to bring the slab of glass we call phones around anymore. Again, love the content, keep it coming! :D

@@realityschool I see. Thanks for sharing. Fair point on cloud computing. I personally have not Stadia, but have seen some neat gameplay reviews on KZbin. The most meaningful impact I feel AR can bring is revitalising the education system globally. The next generation is in for a treat in learning! They will be smarter, more exposed much younger. I grew up with having dial up connectivity. Having to wait 3 minutes for a 15second clip on KZbin 😅 Community-driven teaching and learning even today with streaming apps is much more interactive. How do you foresee AR tech to be integrated with the development of robotics as a whole?
@furthe.r4 жыл бұрын
@@realityschool That is wicked cool! I've always been fascinated with robotics. My first exposure of the two was in Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter back in 2006. They would visualise the health analytics of team members and augment findings from the UAV's point of view ie coordinates of safe spots and target areas. I played Horizon Zero dawn recently, and their implementation of AR in the gameplay is surreal. With real-time tracking of the target's movement to guide the decision-making process. I dig what Hololens marketed in their product launch some years ago about guiding the process to health care professionals and engineers in the field. How do you find developing on that platform? Is it intuitive? How does the support compare with developing AR with say ARKit?
