Miko has been my hero for many years. Like Alice I was raised to be a free thinking Jew. My family was fiercely Zionist when I was growing up in the 50's. I became a critic of Israel and Zionism at some point and had fierce arguments with my father. In in 80's he used to lead a discussion group on issues of the day at the local JCC. At some point I got through to him about Israel and Palestine and in his final years he used to lead those discussions as a critic of Israel. You can image he got a lot of pushback. But when he died at age 97 he was a supporter of the Palestinian People

Any advice on how I can approach my online Israeli/Jewish friend based in Israel. I am trying my best to be as sensitive as I can. But she likes to remind me that as a westerner in the UK I am biased, misinformed and deluded. She shares sources that are very pro-zionist. I ask her to diversify her sources, sources from scholars, differing positions on the political spectrum, Jewish relegious viewpoints. But she refuses, say as long as the source is from 'inside Israel' thats all that matters. (I have found many sources inside Israel that are empathetic towards the Palestinians, but she dismisses them) Also just because I support the people of Palestine, doesn't mean I am excusing Hamas nor does it mean I am against Jews or Israelis. Would appreciate any advice.

I think Dr. Alice Rothchild is an amazing person. Having been raised as an evangelical Christian, I thought I understood Israel ( the Jews are god's chosen people) so their treatment of Palestinians was justified. At the age of 76, I can gladly say that I have deconverted. During this process, I read a book titled 'I Shall Not Hate' written by a Palestinian obstetrician who delivered Jewish babies. That book changed my thinking. Thank you for this interview.

There was a 4 or 5 part PBS documentary about a decade ago hosted and produced by a Jewish man who stated among the many observations why the Red Sea is called the Red Sea. He believed it was mispronounced and should've been called the Reed Sea because there were probably alot of reeds in it. He also doesn't believe that the Jews are the chosen people of God. He believes that if Italians ( Romans) wrote the first holy books THEY would probably call themselves the chosen people of God. Just something to think about. I have a T-shirt bought from an indigenous "Indian" website that shows a global map of the world that says " the holy land is everywhere".

However, I am curious to find out how does one get from "the jews are the chosen people" to "it's ok what they are doing to the Palestinians"? Their being chosen makes it moral for them to kill? I just don't get it. I am with you. After going to Israel I was disgusted after seeing how the Palestinians are treated. It blows my mind that as a people that had to deal with the holocaust. We went to a land and imposed a holocaust against the inhabitants of that land. The Palestinian people r descendants of the original Jews. They are our brothers and sisters. There’s a lot of Jews in Israel That agree with me but are scared to say anything about it over there out of fear of being ostracized by the govt. I would never take Israeli citizenship until all Palestinians have the same rights and opportunities as other Israelis. Another thing that tripped me out over there is the whole I’m a Jew not an Arab thing. If your are mizrahim or Sephardim you are an Arab Jew. Stop that racist bullshit. My moms family are Lebanese Jews and they never separated themselves from there Arab culture. Only in Israel.

They are our brothers and sisters" the extensive DNA analyses described on Wikipedia backs you up; in ancient times there was a single rather pure "flavor" for residents in the area; then one half left for Europe and Arab lands, fed up with the Romans and Ottomans, and the other half stayed, and many became moslem when that option came along. They all still have around 80 percent of the ancient DNA in common.

The anguish is in the fundamental paradox of human being: our nervous systems have to juggle the contradictory instincts for survival: predation/aggression/competition vs caregiving/empathy/cooperation. I live relatively near (Japan), and many of us frequently travel to China (practically anybody with a valid passport can visit, and there's no need for a separate visa to go to Xinjiang). I have been extremely fortunate to know Dr. Rothchild as a patient ; she was very sweet and sympathetic as a doctor. I always knew her to be progressive and liberal; today I feel proud to know that she is standing beside the hapless and helpless Palestinians and I have a feeling that this time Palestinians' sufferings will be over and something positive will turn up on the horizon.

Alice & Miko are a great duo. The next step: Now, today, Palestinian organizations should consider asking the nations of the world to endorse a representation election for Israel / Palestine. A representation election in Palestine has never been held. This anti-Semitic failure to apply democratic procedures in Palestine is due to (1) the stubborn refusal of the UK, under it's 1921-48 Mandate, to conduct a plebiscite in Palestine and (2) the failure of the UN, in 1947, to require an election to answer the question of the governance of Palestine. This betrayal of the fundamental principle of self-government has led to horrific, ongoing Palestinian suffering. A plebiscite now, is both reasonable & the only road to peace.

I had seen miko talk on another podcast and so this one attracted me. I realize of course it was 4 months ago and in light of what's happened recently, it's even more relevant. In essence, I got one new revelation from it and it is the following: THIS process of saying that anything anybody says about anyone is anti-Semitic is NOT a coincidence; it's NOT accidental. IT'S a plan and it's been propagated by a group who have a strategy and it includes all of America and probably beyond. Fundamentally it is a means to an end and the end is to deny people freedom of speech. That may seem far-fetched to some people but as she was talking toward the end it suddenly came to me and it explained all the times in the last few years that they will say of anyone --whether they're white, black, brown, yellow, Jewish, Christian, or Muslim-- that they're racist and anti-semite, even tho they didn't say anything about race or about Jews. IT'S just a way to smear a person and to shut them up and it is planned and it is pernicious and it is an attempt to destroy democracy. Is the CCP behind it? Maybe.

Her ability to question everything and her ability to then tease apart her experiences and draw upon them to take the next step to do something to correct any injustices that she sees.
