i still prefer human bowling pinsetters over the automated machines that's being used in bowling alleys today...LOL! if a human skill sets can be replace by machines, then it was never really a set of skills in the first place. imagine how much a game of bowling would cost today if humans (or unionized humans) are used to set the pins...damn!

because only the managers and CEO's should make all that cash off of the laborers sweat, right? You people keep sniping at your neighbors pay. The people are getting desperate, making less as each generation goes by. Looking at your fellow worker and being jealous of what he has is exactly how the owners want you to think. Let the little people fight for scraps while they keep taking a bigger and bigger piece of the pie as the years go by. Soon, we'll all be fighting for whatever shit jobs are left because people who think like you think only the managers should make a real wage.

@@durrellbrady21 Becoming a longshoreman is a product of who you know in the trade, not your individual hard work. He's a Casual. Completely different than an actual Union Longshoreman. Like he said, they're the part timers. Most of them are probably doing lashing work. They had a lottery a few years back, so he was probably 18 or 19. I was in that same lottery, but looks like his number was called early on. I was fortunate to get a number. Now, thanks to covid, the process is speeding up, so looks like my number will be called up soon, along with thousands of others. The lottery list has 10k plus people on it. I'm just glad for this opportunity. I have family who are union, so I know what it's like just hearing the stories of them having to go back and forth when there were no jobs. I remember the lottery from 2003 also. My friend and I put our names in the hat, but we never got a number. Where is all that automation they bought years ago? Robots can only do so much in the ports. It can move things up, down, left, right. You need people down on the ground actually doing things and fixing the robots when they break down.

hate to tell you but customer service in general is very automate-able. and hiring numbers in the sector are on the decline...the only reason more enormous companies havent phased out their human call centers is because of the backlash they would face. not that that is the only aspect to customer service that is automate-able its just the most likely candidate in the field to see that fate because of how expensive they are. the good thing is that automation while killing old jobs generally brings around new ones. 80 years ago the idea we would have hundreds of people working as agents of a company over the phone from a single place would have been a logistical nightmare, you would have to have a near equal amount of switchboard operators just for incoming calls...40 years later thanks to automated switch boards the prospect of a call center isnt so insurmountable, allowing them to hire even more agents without much fuss but most of the telephone operator jobs have gone or changed to equipment maitenance. historians speculate that the death of the operator job didnt affect the so the thing to take away is if you want security, specialize in your field, climb the ladder, do the thing. because like you said no job is ever truly safe.

Well all the new equipment would have to be maintained by specialists from the company there certain things dock mechanics can’t touch because the company has to fix

Absolutely correct. A more efficient port will generate new jobs inland at logistics facilities handling the goods coming in through the port more efficiently. However, many of those jobs are non-union jobs.

This isn’t actually true. Automation now a days is going to kill a lot more jobs than ever before. Industrial revolution never killed the blue collar worker. This will. That’s a lot of people unemployed. Think about that.

With all the stuff I see and hear - crane operators bringing a six pack up with them, watching someone down a whole pitcher before their shift - they can't automate fast enough. That longshore culture has got to go. Not saying machines are perfect. Also their politics are trash, but that's an aside.

Yup. Worked long enough at Long Beach ports to know that some longshoremen are POS. Feel bad for the cool ones. But automation is here, in so many industries. The 4th industrial revolution. And covid will speed up their agenda. I'm a truck driver, so still safe for now. 😎

Automation isnt just about Longshoreman....its also about all the truck drivers and being removed from the Operations. As you may see truck drivers are out of their Trucks and have to stand in a specific area for their truck to be serviced.

Embrace the change. Maybe work at the company that makes the automated equipment, or repair and maintain the equipment. Any job that pays 3X the competitive salary because of union threats of strikes only makes people angry if the job is not getting done. There are 50 plus container ships off the coast not getting timely unloaded. Its been that way for almost a year. WTF, you want my sympathy? Why should I have to pay for 3X shipping costs to get you a higher salary. The only barrier to entry and getting this problem solved is the Union. My trucker friend says he has never realized what slow is until watching container unloading at long Beach this past year. No sympathy here, go Brandon, go automation.

That's not longshoreman's fault, that's management fault(the people that are doing the automation)😂 they built the system, not us. Your complaint of why you want to support the destruction of people's livelihood is so ignorant.
