Obviously COVID was a complicating factor but 2022 had a lot of the vibe of 2008-09 in the US except no one seemed to talk about it yet. Now it’s more openly discussed and further progressed so in some ways like 2013. As other commenters have hinted though young people have very little frame of reference. College students rarely have had jobs before graduation which also shifts perceptions I think.

It's not even close. The closest comparison would be US 2009 when the unemployment rate was going up. By 2013, the unemployment rate had been a steady decline.

What's funny is Americans are going onto Little Red Book app now and learnt that the purchasing power of 1 Yuan = 1 dollar in the USA. To call an ambulance in China only costs 30 Yuan for the elderly. A Chinese posted his monthly bills with an American and showed that he only needed to pay 70 USD per month to cover rent (apartment with 2 balconies and 2 rooms), utilities and internet etc etc. The internet speed is 1 GBPS. That American guy said that 70 USD is the costs of rent in LA for only A DAY 😅😅😅

In Australia, it costs 100 AUD per month to get 1 MBPS of slow turtle internet speed of mobile data IN THE CITY. I PAID FOR THAT BEFORE 😅😅 Somehow Western countries are better than China in quality of life? Costco buys cheap Chinese goods and sell them to Americans. 😢😢😂🎉🎉

What I got out of this video: China pretty much has the same problems as every other country. Bad economy is a worldwide problem, not just in China. Chinese youth understands the general economy, what employers are looking for, and why some people finds it hard to find certain jobs. Chinese youth answers questions with logic, capable of critical thinking, direct and to the point. Chinese people freely express themselves for the most part.

I have never heard anyone say that the economy is all well and good, and everyone is happy with no one left behind. At any point in time, great jobs are lost and subsequently created. It really depends on where your skillsets are and whether you remain nimble enough to foresee and pivot. A good example is the creation of AI-related roles, which is driving much of the growth now. If you're well versed in it, you will probably think the economy cannot be better than what it is now. The reverse applies.

That is what we can see from the data outside of China. What we also see happening to a lot of Chinese is they are getting involve in scams, money laundering and robbery overseas. That spells economic trouble in China. The few cases of home break-ins in Singapore is because of Chinese national breaking into those rich Singaporeans homes. The Chinese gangs are also intensifying its scams and Chinese actors are falling for it in the northern border of Thailand. It means time are tough in China that they have to rob Singaporean homes or actors are having a tough time they are heading to do scam jobs in Northern Thailand.

I don't think this video touches the real problem of a slow economy. Just ask as few young Chinese about the economy of China is like to feel the person's body temperature by touching a strand of his hair! In Britain many high streets (the busiest street of a town or city) have half of the shops permanently close but the western media never report it. The shop closure started more than a decade ago and the magnitude is increasing. Even in London shopping malls one can see shops close down and the premises papered up to hide the vacancies.

It does report. Do you read news? It reports Debenham enters administration. Wilkos enter into administration. Layoffs are reported on daily basis in the news in the West. US even have a layoff fyi to record all the layoffs. The problem with China is they don't announce layoffs that openly and don't announce if companies are facing economic trouble. You only get to understand the situation through proxy countries that have Chinese companies like Singapore or Southeast Asia when the layoffs hit Singapore or Southeast Asia.
@zizi1005
@zizi1005 11 күн бұрын
The only way you can see China data is by seeing how Chinese behave overseas. Do not always think the media is reporting negatively on China when in actual fact it is reporting negatively about layoffs about themselves (the West) everyday but it is you who is ignoring the news. When there is just one report from Asian boss interviewing Chinese, you then say the media is bias when all of us who observe China through how Chinese behave overseas or the data coming out of Chinese companies based in proxy countries like Singapore or Southeast Asia. We already know there is problem in China economy, but China is not openly admitting it themselves.

@@zizi1005 If you do take an interest say by visiting areas outside your own town and cities you may know the dire situation of the High Streets was widespread well before Eilko and Debenham gone into receivership. As for China I don't think you know it is an extremely competitive country in which industries die and new one set up continuously. Every time a round of trade tariffs is implemented some industries would disappear and the people involved would move on to next business that they can do. You should know China used to make only toys for kids, then garments and jeans, then consumer electronics, then mobile phones, then solar panels and now EV. It is totally different to UK. For example if a coal mining town shuts down the mines the people would stop work, expect the government to come in with aid packages and social benefits, very few would consider changing profession, accept the town to die with the industry and would not try to do something else. I have seen many UK folks retire early as soon as they are made redundant. The social benefits is so good that I have seen many families without anyone doing a permanent job in all three generations surviving just on the benefit system.

@yesyes1842
@yesyes1842 8 күн бұрын
@@jimc1654 But the burden isn't on me to show you where the "hurt" is because the numbers show asia's economic growth is slowing. The numbers show you the "hurt". You are saying it doesnt impact without data to support it. So where is the data that shows Asia is not effected at all? I can show one clear example how it affects Asia's economy. For example if they isolate China's economy, that means they would be less likely to buy from outside adn be more self reliant which means trade naturally across Asia will be less as they practice more isolationism. Does the rest of Asia not sell to China? China buys alot from it's neighbors. How can that not impact asia economy if China buys less from its neighbors because its own economy is being attacked? The west want asian countries to do less business with each other so they can maintain their economic dominance by doing business with everyone as they fight each other... Your theory of only China is impacted only makes sense if all the asian countries have no business with China today so this is just simply shifting China's business with the West over to other asian countries. But the reality is these asian countries do more business with China than anyone else..

We already know what is going in China. The problem is China is never transparent about letting the world knows the true state of China. Layoffs news are being covered up. Being stagnant for a year or two or even 3 is not such a big deal if you know what you want from life and have the luxury of time, youth and family support. Others are not so lucky and have to make that RIGHT choice on their first time. For example if I put my college tuition loan and life savings in BTC when my classmate told me about that scamcoin in 2016 I would be rolling in it and wouldn't have to worry about career prospects right now! :D Second chance is a luxury, but for most working-class folk there is often no such chance. The entire global economy is bad due to inflation, but the living standards in China are still comparatively better than the West because they don't have to rely on foreign manufacturing. They are fully self-sustainable; all of their basic consumer goods can be produced domestically. The whole world is essentially dependent on Chinese imports. A downturn in consumer spending normally signals a recession, but there will always be sectors that are more or less immune. There will always be a consistent need for qualified tradespeople regardless of consumer sentiment. Same goes for the grocery sector or medicine. The college degree has become the new high school diploma now that so many people have them. This gives employers more leverage to demand higher and higher credentials while suppressing wages. A couple of generations ago, only the best and brightest attended college. Now, it's an expectation that everyone attends. It's lost a lot of its bargaining power. The thing with content creation is that only a small minority at the top actually make a decent living. The rest make virtually nothing. And if your goal is to become a streamer or an "influencer," saddling yourself with student debt doesn't seem like a wise investment unless you only plan on doing it as a side hustle. The paradox of many of the entry-level white-collar jobs is that employers expect candidates to have years of work experience, so the applicants who get hired are usually people who have already spent time in the workforce and are accepting a position of underemployment out of scarcity. Fresh graduates are essentially forced to intern for free to gain work experience or be relegated to jobs that don't require a degree. Brutal. The harsh reality is that most college graduates end up working in jobs that are unrelated to their field of study. Unless you're studying something pre-professional, such as engineering or nursing, you'll be forced to take whatever job you can find out of necessity. Speaking of practical skills, the Chinese education system could benefit from matching students with their strengths and interests rather than insisting that everyone enroll in higher education. Not everyone needs to graduate from a 4-year university to be able to make a decent living. But the Chinese emphasis on credentialism is a huge roadblock. We're told by our institutions that the definition of success is getting a high-paying job and having the means to buy a bunch of nice things, but that's not what gives people meaning and purpose in the long run. Your friends, family, and the relationships you develop are what comprise a fulfilling life, not living in a big mansion or driving a fancy car. Chasing materialism is a great way to make you unhappy because you'll never be satisfied.

Your comment are contradictory at the very least. You claim China fares better off than "the West" because they have self-reliant manufacturing, while trumpeting the idea that consumerism and material (yes, it is manufacturing) greed make us unhappy. China manufactures far more than the world and China itslef can absorb, thus the vicious cycle of deflation in which price keeps trending down and business makes loss to cover their finished products. As a result, layoff follows and wage stagnates, which in its turn fuels the deflationary cycle. Look at Japan to see what havoc deflation wreaks on an economy over time.

I commented this in another reply, but China is in a full-scale deflationary period. This is alluded to by the one interviewee who said everyone is saving money. That’s a classic sign of deflation; people save money waiting for products to get cheaper, so the domestic consumer market slumps. To put this in perspective, Japan’s economy hit a deflationary period in the 90s and its economy has not fully recovered from that, to this day. The US Great Depression was a deflationary period and the only thing that pulled the US economy out was WWII. It’s not looking good for them.

Around 60% of those young people you saw are unemployed or some are 'under-employed' and they've given up much hope of finding jobs. Everywhere you go you're seeing leftover construction projects that started many years ago and were done to 'bloat the GDP' (actually this did work for a while!) and run massive real esate money games which have since collapsed. Now their finishing 'bridges to where' and 'hotels for nobody'. Yes indeed, northerners, mostly party members these days, they can get very cheap flights and hotels in Southern China this year. Most of those young people don't have jobs (hence you see so many). China is sometimes seen in '3s'. by the 3rd month you see past the tourist level. "OHHH.. oh wait THAT is why and what I'm looking at okay...". If you did stay 3 years a new layer reveals itself and 'OHHHH shhht... okay now I realize the bigger picture behind all this". but enjoy your time now. @@Charvo75 Last year was rough because in my area, they finally fully closed the Foxxconn factory the final work day of the Lunar New Year. Now, it WAS expected to come inevitably but it was still a downer for the 1500 last remaining empoyees. Worse than that was the Tire Factory that had them move their 'zombie cars' saying it was a 'fire hazard' (a forest fire in the rain really did happen here and it really was parked cars), but i digress, the 3000 workers did not learn that the factory was closed, their jobs gone until AFTER they went home for the Spring Festival. So basically they were kind of 'tricked' into leaving and finding out smack in the middle of the festival. btw i know this because for the many suddenly homeless newly laid off people they made a deal to give them x-months rent in my community. years ago they also closed down all the after-school training centers over Spring Festival too. Hence, I think this is why it's now spoken about like a 'doom'. like some impending job loss coming everyone's way.

China's GDP growth rate was 5.2% in 2023, and the government has set an ambitious target of 5% growth for 2024. While this is a slowdown compared to previous years, it still represents significant growth. Domestic demand remains soft, and there are concerns about weak business confidence and tepid productivity growth. This unbalanced growth, with supply outstripping demand, is a challenge. The Chinese government is focusing on boosting growth through innovation, education, digital infrastructure, advanced manufacturing, and emerging technologies. They are also investing in green technologies like electric vehicles and clean energy. China's share of global manufacturing output is about 30%, and its policies and subsidies in sectors like electric vehicles, semiconductors, and solar energy are influencing global markets. Experts believe that new avenues of growth, such as artificial intelligence, digital financial services, and green technologies, will be critical for sustaining China's economic development.

Nobody believes China is experiencing 5% GDP growth and especially not Mainland Chinese. Even worse, such 'growth' is still on unfinished 'fuer dai dream projects' like 1997 Japanese bullet trains that are sucking up 5% of the nations economy and will cost a billion bowls of rice to keep maintained. We are not looking at some 'challenges' but full-scale economic collapse has already begun and there is no way to stop it. People in China's mainland (PRC) now need to start thinking of ways to protect their safety and be careful about their social status, party membership and where they might be when it gets much worse.

China has huge unemployment among its young population which is normal due to the fact it has 1.4 billion population. If China makes 1/3 of all goods in the world with $1 trillions trade surplus a year and is still having a huge unemployment issue , just imagine its neighbors India with even more population and make essentially 1/10 of what China economy is making, what is the percentage of its population have no job. Unemployment is simple, too many working population expects more unemployment and few resources. That is why the world population is less the better !

@nurain4316 This is a debt crisis characterized by high household leverage. Following a decline in housing prices, household wealth has shrunk, prompting families to deleverage by reducing consumption. This leads to decreased corporate revenues, layoffs, and declining household incomes, creating a negative feedback loop. However, due to policy inertia and a lack of effective bottom-up feedback channels, the government has been reluctant to address household income issues. Many young people mistakenly attribute the situation to the impact of the pandemic, overlooking deeper structural problems such as economic imbalances, over-reliance on the real estate sector, and delayed policy adjustments.
