This is by far the best demo of this underrated amp. Most of the times, these budget amps end up in novice hands and the demos are equally novice which make budget amps sound worse than they actually are. Its great to see this amp in good hands and being used as intended. Would be great to see any settings you used to get those tones.

I was in a death metal band back in the 00’s and one of our guitar players had this amp and we toured with it for several years and it never once let us down. It sounds very very good when you add a hush super c and a sonic maximizer to it.

Thank you for taking the time to put together this video! Of the many stories I've heard about this amplifier probably the funniest one I hear often is how guys will remove the Peavey badge just to save themselves the shit talking from others about how apparently bad the amplifier is but it sounds incredible. I guess most of that is coming from Mesa guys with $2k rigs 😂 I'm a bass player but I picked up this amplifier for $225 along with a Tuki cover, foot switch, and Svetlana 6L6 valves. It seems that so many people bash on this amplifier for one reason or another but your video proves that it has some very decent tones. I will say that there were some reliability issues on early production runs but were later ironed out. All are easily fixable. I've made a few videos on them already. Cheers!

I just got done modding my VK100 and it has CRUSHING metal tones now. Just added a bias adjustment, r100 bypass & changed a few caps and resistors and removed the reverb. I'd highly recommend modding them. It sounds SO brutal

Have you tried jumping the fx loop? Just a normal patch cable plugged into send/return, it's only a slight difference, but it is noticeable...I also use a boost (tubescreamer, etc.) in front...of course this is a backup to my XXX, all in all though I think it's a decent amp when you consider price, versatility, and it is possible to get some gnarly sounds out of it

Its so cheap too 200 to 300 on it the newer ones have antenuator switch built in and you can play at lower volumes. Some of the older ones have it but not the first gen I don't think. But it is an awesome feature so you can play at lower volumes in your bedroom and later at night.

I had a Peavy Valve King 112 combo. The clean channel was fine, but the gain channel was nearly useless. Changing the speaker and the tubes didn't help. When I could afford it I sold the amp and bought a Fryette Sig:X (which I still have). It was a huge upgrade.
@2084142 жыл бұрын
Well you certainly got better sounds out of this amp than I was ever able to dial in. I wonder if the 100w head and the 50 w combo were different circuits.
@Crypticmaskguitar2 жыл бұрын
Could be… but the combo is going to be limited by the speaker itself. So far I’ve run this through a Mesa Oversized 4x12 and a Marshall 1960A… as long as you crank the amp so the walls are shaking (like you should with any amp) then it will sound pretty good. It’s certainly got a specific sound and doesn’t out perform other heads that I own… but hey that’s why most of us have 4-5 (Or if you are a gear nerd like me… 30 haha) Cheers -Ryan

Great vid of these older Peavey heads. I have a Windsor and a XXX. The Windsor is ok at best but the XXX cranks pretty good and I can get some decent tones out of it. I noticed your using Logic, why not Pro Tools since its the "industry" standard? I'm a Logic user myself.
@Crypticmaskguitar2 жыл бұрын
I’ve used Logic for many years. Haven’t felt the need to switch over. Cheers -Ryan
@leonthompson89882 жыл бұрын
The Windsor needs a lower gain V1 like a 12 ay7 or a 12au7. I have one and it's Peaveys jcm 900. If you don't change the preamp tubes to lower gain tubes you really can't lower the gain. I like to set at light breakup and use pedals. I like that the fx loop inputs are on the front
@countzero5150 Жыл бұрын
The Windsor was originally peaveys budget budget tube amp and the valveking was the next step up. These days the Windsors go for more than the valvekings but the vk100 is a hell of a lot of amp for the money and really does hold its own.

On the valve king Amp head what would you recommend your settings for a good metal sound and would a distortion pedal be used with it
@Crypticmaskguitar2 жыл бұрын
I've never been a fan of "Distortion Pedals". If I've spent money on an Amp, I would much rather hear how that amp sounds instead of how it reacts to distortion pedals. But that's me. The key to Tube Amps is always going to be volume. Once you raise the volume you will start to hear how to frequencies actually work in the amp. But I would start with a healthy amount of volume, Gain at maybe 10 O'Clock and everything else at noon. Then shift your EQ to your liking. That Bass control can be a little overwhelming so I would say back it off a hair once you have found something you like. Cheers -Ryan

Finally sold at $400. Cheers -Ryan

The Valve King is a hidden gem and a fantastic amp! You can find them on the used market for $150-400 all day long. But it does not sound like a Soldano SLO-100 or Hot Rod. The 5150 was based on the circuitry of the SLO-100 but they don't sound identical either. But having it in the studio as a spare amp for a different darker flavour has made me a happier player!
