I am an anesthesiologist. The numerical pain scale should be used to determine if your pain management worked. You ask the before and after treating him. It is not a tool to determine if the patient deserves treatment or not.

Nothing wrong with asking the question as a quick way to gauge if its a serious, emergent issue or not. You're supposed to also say "1 to 10, with 1 being barely any pain and 10 being the worst pain you've ever experienced". Given a sense of scale, most people wont go straight to 10

This is a sad truth on both patient and medical staff sides. I have Sickle Cell disease and chronic pain is a part of life for people like us. I also am a medical professional. From a very young age people with Sickle Cell disease are taught coping techniques to try and deal with the pain. With that being said, some of us have built up a high pain tolerance using coping techniques. So even when our pain is a 10, it may not look like it because we are on our phones, that does not mean our pain is not at a 10. Being on our phones is just a way to distract us from the pain until we get relief. There were many times I've been in extreme pain but because I'm not screaming and crying, medical staff think I'm lying which isn't right. Not to say that there aren't those out there who fake it, because believe me there are people who cry wolf, but don't assume it's all of us.

i’m a nursing student and in my last shift we had a patient who has sickle cell and they were getting frustrated bc RN’s were not handling their pain complaints promptly enough. definitely a good learning experience because my professor explained exactly what you just said about coping mechanisms for distraction. he said it doesn’t matter what number out of 10 they say. you believe them bc they cope on a regular basis, but that doesn’t mean they don’t feel pain differently. very good learning experience so when i am a nurse in the future i won’t develop some of the bad habits that are in practice

I came into the ER with a 9 level pain. Nurses and doctors were about to roll their eyes before they gave me a CAT scan and saw my entire abdomen was inflamed and my colon was on the verge of toxic mega colon. I ignored my abdominal pain for two weeks until it became unbearable because I knew a doctor would just dismiss me unless I was on the verge of death.

Are you my uncle? He stopped pooping for 2 weeks and didn’t think anything was wrong, just felt sick and his stomach hurt like crazy. Half a week later, he drives himself to the ER and promptly passes out in front of the front desk. 1 and a half weeks later he wakes up from his medically induced coma with a stoma bag, sans half his small intestine- turns out, he had a block in his large intestine that was keeping him from pooping. He didn’t see anyone about it until it was backed up to his esophagus and he was in toxic shock because his intestines ruptured. He skipped the line in the waiting room though! Now he’s good as new, the doctors did great

Gentle reminder some people do not express pain outwardly, especially in public. I was still as a stone when an ER nurse plucked gravel and glass out that was imbedded in my body from a bike accident. Because I was scared to be punished for crying. It was excruciating. I was sobbing on the floor the minute I got home and was alone. I was trained like a dog not to emote distress, doesn't mean I don't feel it. It just means I'm more likely to be subject to medical neglect when trauma informed care is not being implemented. Because doctors don't take me serious. I've almost died a few times now because of this.

From a perspective of a health professional, keeping as still as possible due to the amount of pain you're in is very noticeable and I would hope that the nurse who was removing gravel and glass from you noticed it too. Usually when I see a patient in so much pain they don't dare to move, I consider them to be in a very high level of pain and treat them as such - even if the patient doesn't complain.

When I was younger my period pain used to be so bad I would collapse, the only way I could describe it was as if I was being stabbed repeatedly in the uterus with a blunt knife (still gets like that on occasion but definitely not as frequent or as intense) so my pain tolerance is measured up against that. I finally sought medical help for my 8/10 period pain ( and it was - uncontrollable crying in the fetal position, couldn't stand or sit, etc). Endometriosis is the diagnosis we are working with and I'm current using a hormonal treatment thst has dialed the pain back to a 3/10. But as my previous surgeries were so easy this experience has now given me an idea of what those upper numbers really mean as well as empathy for my patients that have learned to cope with it and worse everyday.

Literally THIS. I've been diagnosed with Endometriosis, and can positively say that a 'bad period' for me was more painful than when I broke my leg (at the ER for the major trauma centre for my state after the x-ray they said it was a 'really nasty break'). I rated my pain for the broken leg at a 6, and only two other things have been more painful than a 'bad period'.

I've had chronic migraines since I was 7, so the level of pain that I'm able to function at is skewed from what most would consider normal. My childhood neurologist helped me understand the pain scale and that I have a constant background headache around 4-5 most of the time. At my first appointment with her, she was trying to figure what my baseline pain was and got a safety pin. She gently put it against my skin and asked if I could feel it, and if it hurt. I replied yes and no, so she pushed a little harder and asked me again. My answer was the same and she went a little harder. Mom started to get worried because she thought it looked like it was going to draw blood so the Dr took her out of the room. She explained that while I could feel something going on, my head hurt so badly that I wasn't registering the pin as actually pain. As an adult I've come to understand that my 8 would probably put someone else in bed for the day and if I was ever actually pain free, I'd be worried that I was dead.

Some people actually have a high pain tolerance and look fine when they aren’t. I have cervical instability myself and for years people thought I was fine. I went into the ER and people thought I was fine when I was having neurological complications from the instability. I saw a specialist recently and she put me in a neck brace and said surgery was unavoidable and that the pressure the instability was causing on my brain stem was dangerous. I've been told by several doctors that I rate my pain too low because I always use my imagination to imagine even worse pain and then I'm like "yea, having seven kidney stones at the same time (three in one kidney and four in the other) is bad pain, but couldn't it be even worse if someone came and kicked me in the kidneys on top of it?" And then I don't give a high enough rating because I can almost always imagine a potentially even worse painful situation. I have heard from others that that's a common experience for people with chronic pain, which is what I experience, so it makes sense I guess. For me, it's helpful to look at the description of what the one to ten mean on that scale. There is really good descriptions about what kinds of things in your life your pain takes over at different stages, like from being aware of your pain only when you think about it, to finding it hard to even think about anything else or listen to anything, and being fully consumed by pain, all the way to being incapable of moving due to pain. I'm very bad with numbers and I need words to describe what the scale means. Numbers mean nothing to me, because my brain doesn't work like that.
@demarisoxman4600
@demarisoxman4600 2 жыл бұрын
This is why, whenever I am asked to rate my pain, I will give my number, and then ask the doctor/nurse, "What does that number mean to you?" Like recently, when I was talking to my doctor about my chronic hip pain, I initially said 4. Her description of what she interpreted a 4 to mean was less debilitating than what I was experiencing, so from there I was able to say "Ok, I think it's actually more like a 5." I think pain scales can be helpful, but they require communication on both sides, because pain is subjective.

I have severe chronic pain and I can be laughing with my friends and family but dying on the inside. The pain scale is a joke, I've been told I'm lying as well when my blood pressure was clearly very elevated and heart was racing. While this character may be one that don't actually have pain, don't just assume someone is faking it if they're not screaming and crying.. when you've been in severe chronic pain for years(10+) you just don't show it like others do. if we did we would be constantly crying, shaking, screaming, etc. You learn to hide it and just smile and laugh through it. Nurses and doctors who instantly think people are faking it because we're not screaming, are not good drs and nurses. Just be patient, ask, examine, etc before determining in your head that's it's not real. Not everyone is text book case.

I've come to nice that the only time my blood pressure is elevated at the hospital is when I'm in pain. I don't always have a high pain tolerance but I've had chronic back pain for YEARS now so it's gotta be worse than that for me to even rate over an 8. I also apparently wasn't displaying the amount of pain I should've been when I had a collapsed lung lobe 🤷🏽‍♀️ my nurse believed something was wrong but the Dr was reluctant. She said if the Dr wouldn't order chest rads she'd do it herself, he finally did and it revealed the answer, but I wasn't all that painful looking at me

As someone with RA, gotta agree. It’s also hard for me to rate my pain sometimes because I get so used to the pain and don’t realize how bad it is until I’m having a good day and a joint or two doesn’t hurt as bad as before. (And, yes, like you said, there definitely are those, like the character in the short, who over exaggerate it but in real life that’s not always the case…there’s a reason chronic illnesses and pain sometime get nicknamed as “invisible disabilities”)

@@emsee5438 oh 100% idk how many times I've said my pain is a 8-9 or and they give me a dirty look. It's like look I could sit there and cry and play it up or I could be honest and explain myself. But the issue is they never want to hear. As soon as you say "it's close to a 10" they instantly already have their mind made up. the pain I experience everyday will make most bawl possibly even scream but for me it's the norm. It's something my friend understand but they don't get sometimes they're like "well I want you to do something when youre feeling okay"(typically it's hanging out" but you never know when you're gonna feel okay. It's not something you can pin point and you can feel great but when it's time to hangout it's a switch and the severe pain is there. You just grit your teeth and spend the time with them or you'll never get to if you try to rely on "when you're feeling okay" But for the Dr stand point, for the amount of learning they have to do about chronic illnesses and conditions you would think they'd be more eye opened to the chronic severe pain that comes with it and understand that what's a 10 to someone isn't a 10 to a chronic pain and illness patient. But sadly there's really no doctors that are like that especially at our local hospital. Btw, I hope you're doing okay!

I have Ehlers Danlos Syndrome and have had several surgeries including two heart surgeries. Having a chest tube with wall suction in that cut a nerve was my most painful experience. I passed out multiple times and woke up shouting and choking and had to be sedated and reintubated because they couldn’t control the pain. I rate my 7-8 pain as when I can’t concentrate and my vision starts going out. Most days I’m at a solid five so about where it hurts enough I can’t ignore it but not so bad that involuntary body functions are being impacted.

@Josh Josh It may be fast, but giving a feeling of something as powerful as pain a number is dehumanizing and subjective. As this video shows pain with a visual trauma is taken more seriously than by most people including "highly trained medical professionals". What if someone has internal issues not visible then is that automatically mean less pain? Obviously this video is more of a stereotype about cell phone use. I don't work in an ER and I am sure their are plenty of cases of "minor" emergencies and such that maybe are not as immediately in need of medical treatment. Unfortunately I have had experience at the ER multiple times in the last few years including when my family doctor told me to go there. It is not something I like or want to do. I hope not everyone is judged so quickly what their pain number "really is". As others have said I have great difficulty using a 1 to 10 scale when I am in a lot of pain. I like the 1 to 4 or 5 scale as 10 levels of Likert scaling is too fine for me. Like many people pain only has maybe 4 or 5 levels, not 10. So asking someone a number to describe a feeling is not easy to answer and often not very accurate.

You're definitely not the only one. Often people who come in with chest pain, don't believe it to be pain, but a tinge, pressure or discomfort etc. Usually I just get them to rate how big the discomfort is, even if it's not a number but mild, moderate or severe is also helpful if the numbers are confusing. From a health point of view discomfort is pain - often it's a mild pain (like a 1-3 on the pain scale), but it's still pain. It's a sensation that usually wouldn't be there, and most likely shouldn't be there.

A few months ago I almost missed my daughters wedding because my back hurt so bad. I couldn’t even touch a bite of food. Made it home and sucked it up for two weeks thinking it was a bad strain with spasms. Couldn’t eat, sleep, lie down. Only comfort came from bending over the side of my bed and using pillows to keep my upper body up. My husband and son thought I was over reacting until I finally HAD TO GO TO DOCTOR and had an MRI. TURNS OUT I had three fractured vertebrae with severe spasms. That pain was FAR WORSE than child birth. I would say that was a TEN. Should have seen the looks on my husband’s and son’s faces. I kept complaining of neck pain, but got used to it since I have ehlers danlos syndrome and dislocate bones multiple times a day. Doctors told me I was lying/ lazy/ complaining and that my pain couldn’t possibly be that bad because I didn’t look like I was in any pain. Yeah I internally decapitated last year at the age of 30. My local ER had never even heard of craniocervical instability, atlantoaxial instability, and occult tethered cord even though they are common in Ehlers Danlos Syndrome. I was airlifted cross-country from California to Maryland so the only neurosurgeon who specializes in craniocervical fusion for EDS patients could perform emergency surgery. I wasn’t breathing, was having TIAs multiple times an hour, and was paralyzed. My brainstem had been crushed when my head detached from my spinal column. Due to the pressure on my brainstem my heart was also losing its rhythm and stopped and restarted multiple times. My local ER wouldn’t even help arrange the transport. They told me my case was too complex and trying to save me would waste other patient’s lives. A doctor actually said that to me while I was paralyzed and unable to breathe on my own. The EDS specialist neurosurgeon in MD helped get me a life flight to him in the middle of the night. Thanks to Dr. Henderson I was in surgery right away when the air ambulance landed and when I woke up again I could breathe completely on my own, I had feeling in my arms and legs again and could move them, and I haven’t had a single TIA! That C0-C2 fusion saved my life! And yeah I had neck pain! My head literally fell off …

He sat there, in severe pain, silently bearing it and being his normal casual, tolerant self, until he finally asked the nurse when he would be getting pain killer. Her response?? “You looked fine! ER staff have become a drive thru for pain killers that they will most likely just write the guy a script for 3 days to get him out. Both my hamstrings seized while I was asleep and after trying to get out of bed for 15 hours, my husband called an ambulance, who even the crew saw I was in pain, and shot me up with fentanyl to get to the ER. Doc and Nurse thought I was faking and I was abused by the staff. I kindly asked for a muscle relaxer so I could attempt to try to stretch the muscles so I could sit up. Nope. I was told I already got pain killers and that should work. After me laying there for 2 hours the nurses exact words were "my shift ends in 15 minutes unless you are still here, so I'm going to make you stand". When she couldn't she got another nurse who told her to stop when I was screaming with tears down my face. She said no, keep on going. Got me to stand, which led me to fall. I was sit up on the bed. In 5 minutes she handed me a RX for Vicodin, I crumbled it up and threw it at her. Told her opioids mask pain, they don't treat it. I got in a wheel chair and left. It was traumatizing to say the least. The next day I had a follow up with my doctor, still needed help to get around because the spams was now a piercing pain. She tore my right hamstring. That's why I fell. I didn't feel it at the time because of the fentanyl. Got muscle relaxers and 3 months of rehab because that nurse.

Thank you I was about to comment something similar. When you have chronic pain that’s built up over many years you can develop extremely high pain tolerance levels which is what happened to me. I became really good at hiding my pain because I had responsibilities that needed to be done and I also had a boss who was a bully and if she didn’t like you she would do anything to make your day horrible in the hopes that you would request a transfer or quit. I had been walking around with multiple spinal cord injuries that were progressively getting worse over the last 10 years. My doctor didn’t believe me and said it was all in my head. I couldn’t take it anymore and demanded he order an MRI which he didn’t want to do. You can imagine his shock when the head MRI doctor called him the next day to tell him that he needed to get me in to see a Neurosurgeon asap because my spinal cord was being crushed in between my vertebrae in more than 4 places and the nerves were being crushed and cut off which was causing the numbness and severe pain in my arms, hands, legs, and feet. Each step was an electrical jolt shooting down my arms and legs and it got worse with each step and the longer I was standing. My Neurosurgeon couldn’t believe that I was even able to stand up, walk, or function at the level I was with the location and amount of damage shown in the MRI. After surgery he said that the damage had been even worse and that I had been one wrong move away from death or becoming a quadriplegic on a respirator for the rest of my life. Over the next few years I learned that there are actually different types of pain all with their own pain scale and that even though an area might be numb it doesn’t mean you can’t feel pain in that area. I was raised to complain about things which was kinda a generational thing and you grin and bear it. Thankfully my team of new doctors understands what I am dealing with daily and I left that first one as quickly as I could.

Yes. I live with chronic pain. One day, I had the worst headache of my life start when I bent to get something out of the oven. They didn’t seem to take me very seriously in the ER, where I was holding as still as possible so as to not cause more pain. They barely looked at me at all but sent me to get my baby monitored in L&D. (Nothing was wrong with my baby! It was my head!) In L&D, I was unable to make it to the toilet for a urine sample because the pain from movement was crazy insane. As the L&D nurse helped me back into the wheelchair, she remarked that they shouldn’t have sent me up and I need to stay in a bed and only move to get in an MRI. Long story short, I had a cyst (thankfully non-cancerous) causing a problem in my sinus. When I got my paperwork and saw my notes later, the notes said, “Resting comfortably”, and a bunch of other stuff they never even checked about how my eyes looked clear and my lungs sounded good, etc. 🙄

But for me at that time, 10 was the most pain I could remember being in, and it was half of that. So to me, it made sense. I know my life was good at that point, because I have more perspective on greater pain. But I think we could all use lessons on pain communication. For me now, I evaluate my own pain by what id be willing to lose to make the pain stop. 100$? It’s aggravating. A surgery with pain medicine and a mild recovery? I probably need intervention. But recently, I had the thought that if I lost some of my fingers to get rid of the feeling I had, it’d be worth it. And that’s when I knew that I was really not doing well.

The nerve pain that developed in subsequent years definitely merited some 8/8.5s, even a 9 when it's bad enough that I literally CANNOT walk. Cut off part of my finger? 5. Migraine? 7, easily. But pain is so subjective, you really need to give some preface! If I come in with a broken arm (both radius and ulna) and tell you my pain is a 4, it's not because it's not broken--it is for sure broken, dude, I've broken everyfreakinthing, I KNOW--it's because my scale really has some serious levels to it. I had this woman who kept telling me her pain was a 10 and it’s the worst she had ever felt, but it was only ever when we came in for the other patient. Never called, never screamed or cried, never any signs of pain or distress, her heartrate was normal, temp was normal, no signs of anything going on, and yet she kept telling me it was a 10. She had experienced child birth several times too but ‘the pain was so bad she couldn’t even have a sheet over it’. Yet she only asked for pain meds when we talked to her neighbour and never complained about anything whenever we were there for her…

The pain scale isn't a very good way of gauging pain. I saw a really good chart where it compared the 1-10 scale to how the pain affects you. For me, I was almost passing out at a 7/10 because it was constant, but I will scream at a 9/10 (I usually only experience pain that bad momentarily). That shows how subjective the pain scale is.

Yeah I have a high tolerance for pain so I can say 8 with a straight face and mean it, if I'm at a 9 or 10 I'm probably close to if not already passed out lol I've never been able to pass out from physical trauma either though I've just lived through incredible amounts of pain and that's just how it is 😅

"First, let me tell you what my 'ten' is. A pain of ten would be every nerve on fire, your skin flayed and organs taken out and spread around the room while a carpet is made from your nerves. But you're still alive, you can't die, and you're still sane, you can't go mad from the pain. That's my ten. I constantly live with level two pain, every day I wake up my body hurts, dull signals as familiar to me as these four walls probably are to you. Some days it's only a one point two, say days it's a two point seven. Hot shows help bring the pain down, as do a few other things, but pain is my constant companion. So I want you to understand very clearly that when I say I am at pain level five point four that I have given very careful considering of my own personal pain scale and am only here now because _this really fucking hurts_ and I can't treat it myself." Yes I have spent far too much time going over my own pain scale because of fluctuating chronic pain. I hope to never have to need to use any of the various ideas I've had for what "ten" would actually be.

Sounds a bit like me after 50 years of making my living with (and being knocked around by) horses. After a particularly bad incident involving an argument (I lost) with a horse about who was supposed to be on top, I couldn't stand the agony and went to the ER. Went with a "guesstimated" 8 on the pain scale when asked. They did Xrays, and discovered 6 broken (not cracked - Snapped into clearly visible separate pieces - one of them 4 distinct pieces) ribs, and a partially collapsed lung. Rushed me to MRI and found bruised spleen and stomach, and lots of torn muscles, cartilage and ligaments across my chest, along with two ribs detached from the sternum. Doc says "I thought you said the pain was an 8?" and started a dilaudid drip. What can I say? After 50 years of it, I'm pretty well used to being beat up by critters that outweigh me by a factor of like 150-200:1 and capable of inflicting pain - if not actual damage - simly by shifting their weight at the wrong moment.

My clinic has upgraded the pain scale posted in the waiting room to include “unable to text” and other helpful things with the numbers. I will say that the pain scale is very subjective, my “five”, as someone with chronic pain after cancer, is different than someone else with different circumstances. However, I do get very irritated by someone who has ten of ten pain for a minor condition, I shouldn’t, but I do.
@eecoconut
@eecoconut 2 жыл бұрын
That whole "unable to text" thing depends on the person and shouldn't be used to determine if someone is in pain or not. As a person with a chronic illness where chronic pain is a constant in my everyday life and as a medical professional, I can tell you 100% that texting for me and many others is a coping technique that helps to distract from the pain until pain relief is achieved. My hospital is trying to change that because they understand that everyone is different therefore pain tolerance is as well.

I wish it was more universal to display several common behavior differences. By 10, conversation is impossible. The brain and body are both focused on the pain. Based on your description of being unable to stop crying and difficulty breathing, that'd be definitely in the 7-9 range depending on how much is panic and how much is pain (though either needs treatment).

I woke up at 5 in the morning with so much pain that I thought my appendix bursted. I called my doctor and she said I was just ovulating. Moving and even speaking was very painful for me. I had to take a whole painkiller instead of the quarter of it and ended up sleeping until 3pm.

This is actually really messed up. Just because someone “looks fine” doesn’t mean they aren’t in a lot of pain. A patient being high functioning with pain in no way makes it okay to invalidate or doubt someone’s pain. This kind of gaslighting is abuse in the medical field, and it’s beyond wrong. I’m not going to watch this and not say anything about it.

Or: some people lack self awareness and think they are the only person who has ever experienced pain, others are there to acquire opioids, others ate just careless and want attention. I’ve experienced what you’re describing multiple times with dentists specifically not believing me because I’m composed. Another time I had broken ribs and the doctor didn’t believe me until they felt it. But for every time that’s happened to me I’ve seen people come into the waiting room demanding a prescription for narcotics for a toe or rib they broke ten weeks before. You can’t just call any ol thing gaslighting; people abuse the hospital system around the clock.

I’ve decided the pain scale goes up exponentially. At the top of a 10, unconsciousness occurs…which I’ve had happen. When I broke my leg severely, the broken leg didn’t hurt that badly once I reduced my ankle…foot? My foot was dangling, flopping all over and not where it should have been at all. Once that was more or less back in place, it hurt less than many sprains I’ve have (thank you Grandpa for the hypermobility!) My very messed up spine and congenital spinal condition cause me chronic pain, that gets to be too much. I wouldn’t know how to rank my peripheral neuropathy, as it like no other pain. So, yeah, if someone in on their phone, just make sure the family doesn’t see you roll your eyes.

I know there are people like this, but I actually hate medical professionals who are like this. They almost cause my sister to die. People who aren't drama queens or attention seekers always minimise their pain when in public and in front of a doctor because of social politeness, and medical professionals like this don't take them seriously. Plus, some people are autistic and some have anxiety/depression, and there are many other groups of people who won't show up at the ER wailing in pain. My sister went into the ER with horrible pain in her general abdomen area. After waiting for 3 hours in immense pain, she was finally seen by the doctor. They asked a few questions, gave her pain killers and told her to go home. The pills didn't do anything, of course. Then, in the middle of the night, she finally got some sleep but was woken up by intensified extreme pain that she was screaming and couldn't even stand straight. Her husband drove her to the ER again and once there, they had to wait for a while again and when she was seen this time, they gave her a bed. But the nurse and the doctor told her she was just being dramatic, that her pain was nothing. They basically told her to calm down and after a few hours, if there's nothing wrong with her, they'd let her go. Well, 'lucky' for her, the pain got worse again and caused her to scream, and THAT'S WHEN THEY DECIDED TO TAKE HER SERIOUSLY. They finally checked her and found that she's got dead tissue in her ovary as a result of her cyst and if the doctor said it was good that they checked her 'early' because SHE COULD'VE DIED FROM SEPTIC SHOCK if they waited any longer! This is why I hate medical professionals like this.

This is what happens when people don't understand how to scale something In case anyone needs an actual idea for pain here's just a general one that does vary from person to person though 10= can't stop screaming can't move where the pain is and have severe injury in the spot possible blood or severe dark bruising 9 can't move the spot causes screaming from pain when try Gonna skip a few 3 hurts to move the area but still can 2 the area hurts but is fine moving without increasing the pain 1 basically anything that hurts a small amount like a paper cut or accidentally poking yourself with a needle the pain typically doesn't last long I'd say if you're going to say your pain is anything higher than a 5 it's going to be something that doesn't just go away in a day or two and the closer you are to 10 the stronger the pain killers you will have to have I tried my best to think of different things that would just show why it would be as high or low without giving examples because different things will cause that reaction out of people Though I will say if you break a bone even if you don't really feel the pain go see a doctor don't want to end up not going because that causes other issues down the line like for me there was a time I broke my arm didn't go to the doc because I was dumb and didn't realize it was broken when it healed it healed wrong so now my left arm can't extend fully still haven't been to a doctor for it and it's been about 3 or 4 years now plan to get it checked out knowing odds are they will either leave it or rebreak it to reset it so it heals properly it works fine as is just hurts every now and then Please save yourself the pain and get anything major checked out immediately

He let out a sigh and told me that "if the pain was a 10 you would be dead right now." madd me feel like they didn't care about me. Of course that doesn't compare to this example, but yeah it made me think of that. Now when doctors and my psychologist asks me to rate pain or mood out of 10 I stick to 4-7 range because I'm afraid of them saying the number is too high or low lmao

I recall going to the ER in severe abdominal pain, unable to properly breathe but because my Ox sats were acceptable to the nurse while sitting in the little triage room, she figured I was okay enough to attempt her normal line of questioning about my pain, which I couldn't answer but eventually got help for it after waking up in an ER room and my chest felt afire. Apparently I passed out and that was some kind of an answer, I guess. This guy and his 9.5 out if 10 while still figuring if he wants to swipe right or left? Sheesh.

I can't stand his videos. They're so biased and judgemental. As someone with chronic illness who is in pain ALL the time, I have built an extreme pain tolerance and experience level 8 pain every single day. Some days it gets to a ten and I lay down and cry, but it's the type of pain that the average person would rush to the ER screaming over. Just because some of us are forced to live in extreme pain and have learned how to cope and stay calm incredibly well to survive, does not mean the pain isn't there.

Can we please stop with this? Suffering is not a competition. For one thing pain is subjective, as the pain scale is usually asked as "10 being the worst pain you've ever experienced" meaning that it's individual to each person AND different people have different pain tolerances. Also people's concept of the worst pain imaginable can shift with experience, for example if they have a baby, a painful injury or if they are just someone who experiences a lot of pain in their life, such as a Chronic pain sufferer. I walk around everyday in pain that would not be tolerable to other people (that I'd rate a 4-7 on the pain scale depending on how bad it is), but I can still get injured, get migraines and have other pain that would make me seek medical help that my "normal" or "background" pain wouldn't. Doctor's shouldn't assume that just because you aren't screaming that you aren't in pain. I got hospitalised in April for suspected meningitis & had to have a lumbar puncture and head CT because I was in so much pain. 10 on pain scale. I wasn't screaming though because M I G R A I N E and I already wanted to cut out my brain and throw it in the trash, screaming wasn't going to help me.

@ngerstner753 The 3 most painful things I've ever experienced are: - Getting a coil put in the 1st time without anaesthesia (I've never had kids so my cervix wasn't amused) - Having a lumbar puncture - The recovery from having a metal plate & 8 screws put into my wrist. I didn't know you could get contractions in your arm, apparently you can. :( Yeah I know some people who are really dramatic about it too. Meanwhile I'm in pain every day of my life from about 15+ different conditions and I have to take so much medication, pain relief and stuff for side effects. I can really struggle sometimes to have sympathy for people who have minor issues. Like my partner keeps getting tattoos and then whines while they heal. I'm like seriously? You paid someone to draw on you with a needle & now you're gonna complain about the pain?

I think instead of the pain scale doctors should ask "what is the pain keeping you from doing?" If somebody can't shower, sleep, or eat from the pain. Or maybe they can function for a time but it's so sharp they collapse. It gives a better understanding
