I'm a musician, and I had a gig where Darko was a guest with his wife. It was a orthodox Serbian New year celebration, year was 2013. Darko was very cheerful, happy, he was enjoying himself, he was very respectful to anyone who was there, he gave us a very, very good tip. Man is a LEGEND!!!

Many Europeans dont like life in America at first. Esoecislly from mefiterranean and Balkan where life is very different. And esoecially if they are younfer than 23 years old and did not process professional plan to give sime tjme to know what it will be like. He was not at all used to be a sissy and just to listen and be quiet. He knew he was a great player who could dominate in NBA and he wanted to do it right away. I was a 17-year old foreign college freshman when I came to the US at the same time as Darko in 2003, and there actually were cellphones and there was video chatting with MSN Messnger, but I agree with your point. Darko was thrown into the deep end of a highly competitive professional environment, in an alien country with no friends or family or support base, and he was completely unprepared to navigate that environment. The NBA is not great at helping its players survive and thrive in that environment, which is why so many NBA players end up bankrupt. The problems were just exacerbated by Darko's culture shock and being a rookie outsider on a successful veteran team, even though he was eventually able to overcome it and become a solid NBA roleplayer.

The thing with young talents is that they need to play and develop, or their abilities start decreasing. Look at Jokic. Got into NBA, started playing, is a beast since season one. Look at Doncic, got into the NBA, started playing, is a beast since season one. You don't bring in a world class talent to use him as a bench-warmer. I agree that kids shouldn't automatically get the Starter role, but what the fuck do you want the guy to do? But even Darko acknowledges he didn't take responsibility the way he needed to when he had the new surroundings afterwards.

What hurt Darko’s career: 1. Drafted by the Pistons who was coached by Larry Brown. Larry is notorious for not playing young players. Just look how he botched the 2004 Olympic squad. 2. Getting drafted 2nd overall. Honestly if he was drafted in the mid to late rounds, he wouldn’t get nearly as much of the hate. 3. Going 2nd in one of the most talented draft classes ever. 2003 is up there in talent with 1984 and 1996. Darko essentially got the Sam Bowie treatment in that draft.

It really is a bummer what happened to him, and I don't think it was only his attitude and work ethic. From the get go a lot of negative factors aligned, he was drafted 2nd so the pressure was as high as it can get, he happened to have a bad first couple of games on a stacked team where opportunities don't come often, he didn't speak the language well so he probably felt isolated. I mean it's a perfect scenario that can send you down a spiral of psychological distress.

Ljudi iz Pistonsa su mu stalno govorili da bude strpljiv i da će dobiti minute, a onda ga zakucaju za klupu i dečko je prso. Pričao je kako je Leri Braun hteo od njega da pravi defanzivnog specijalca i nisu mu ni spuštali loptu. A taj isti Larry Brown je bio poznat po tome što nije verovao Evropljanima, nešto kao onaj idiot Stephen A. Smith. Pritom je i Paspalj pričao da su kod njih mnogo lakši treninzi, a on je bio po 8 sati dnevno u hali kad je otišao u San Antonio, Gregg Popovich (kod koga je živeo na početku) nije mogao da veruje. I naravno, kako je Larry Brown bio trener u tom trenutku, Paspalj nije video teren i pokupio se i vratio u Evropu, iako je u tom trenutku bio najbolje evropsko krilo.

I can see how moving from A small country to the US can be a culture shock. I’ve seen people who come here and absolutely hate everything about the US. I’ve seen way more people thrive here though. One time this kid from Somalia came to my school, he said in his country he got all the girls and had like 50 friends he can call to hang out with. Then he got to the US and nobody would even speak to him, I felt so bad for him. After we finished school I saw him at a 7 11 and he was out of it on some heavy medication. His brother told me he tried to kill himself and the doctors put him on heavy meds. All he does is take his meds, sleep and eat junk food now. I really hope he’s doing better now, you can tell he was a happy person before he got here. The US isn’t for everyone, some people prefer a small country and being around people their own people. My dad says he still regrets moving my family from Portugal to the USA. We lived so good in Portugal and had so many people we knew. Now in the US most of the people are fake af, I got cousins who live 15 mins away but I haven’t seen them in almost 10 years. It’s sad how the US will make you care about one thing and that’s MONEY! In Portugal we had money too but we also had love for each other. I could just walk in my neighbors house and grab something to eat. Do that in the US and you’ll end up getting shot or put in a mental hospital lol.

All about competition and screwing, taking advantage of the other guy. Guess why they have so many crimes. Small countries are different. Darko Milicic was actually great offensive minded player with so big talent in him. His head was the only problem. By drafting him I can say that Dumars predicted future of the basketball. Why ? Because he was modern center , so good for today’s basketball.

There is a serious background coming from Darko. He was born and raised in a family that back then struggled to get food and supplies so usually when someone gets a huge amount of money in just a few days, then it is very difficult to control your hunger for material things. His temperament is undeniable, it was the same before the NBA and during the NBA. Since he grew up on the "street", like most American players, he did not allow himself to be criticized and always got into conflicts. Hence the attitude he had. He cannot be blamed for the position in the draft for which they chose him. He is talented, strong, tenacious and has a solid shot. But his temper destroyed his career, as he himself says on the podcasts he hosts... so if nothing else, Darko is not hypocritical, he is aware of his possibilities and aware of his shortcomings.

The thing about Milicic was that he was superbly talented but lacked social support which continued into decline in motivation. He was placed in a losing situation and never recovered from it. Perfect shit storm was concocted to derail him. All that being said, he played with a younger brother of one of my teammates, from what I’ve heard he was a good kid, but immature. At 18 we all are, Detroit failed to recognize that

Accept it, he wasn't that good, many teams gave him a chance and he blew it each time, he averaged 9 points at his peak, minnesota gave him that chance and he still proved to be an overhyped bust. Miličić had a problem most high picks don't have to face - he came to a championship contender. That's because the Grizzlies traded their 2003 first round pick to Detroit as a part of a deal made all the way back in 1997. So much time has passed between the trade and the draft that the Grizzlies relocated from Vancouver to Memphis in the meanwhile. At the time of the trade, that didn't seem like such an important decision, yet that's what cost the Grizzlies getting the second pick from what may have been the strongest draft class ever. Anyway, back to Miličić, the point is that, under normal circumstances, such a high pick would have never ended in one of the best teams in the league. That's also why Pistons were willing to gamble - they had nothing to lose, they already had a great team. Also, Dumars wanted to prove himself as a GM, and show that he can find a gem from the other side of the ocean. Larry Brown couldn't care less about Dumars and his ideas - he was there to win the title, not to lose his time and nerves over some European hotheaded kid (Brown has never liked foreign players anyway). Some worse team and some other coach would have the patience and could try to find a way to incorporate Darko into the NBA and change his mindset. Also, in some other team, Darko would naturally get much bigger role and more playing time, which would probably satisfy his ego (he is not the only NBA player with an enormous ego, that's for sure). Yet, in Detroit, only Dumars was willing to give Miličić some larger role, and even he eventually gave up on him and he was written off as a draft bust and forgotten before the end of his first season (i.e. before his 19th birthday!). So, while Miličić is to blame for a lot of things that went wrong with his career, at its beginning in Detroit, he was just really, really unlucky.

As a timberwolves fan i greatly enjoy these 'how bad was' videos. Trips down memory lane. Darko was way better than Anthony Bennett or Johnny Flynn. The 10-11 timberwolves were terrible but Darko stood out; he was very skilled, huge, and pretty mobile. But then the 11-12 timberwolves were actually good (21-19 and in 7th place when tremendous rookie Ricky Rubio got hurt--finished 5-21 without him) and Darko carried himself the same way as when the team was terrible. Like 'guys, why are we trying so hard? Let's just cash the checks'

@@yahlee1802 Hakeem went through the college system and was prepared for the NBA, he later took American citizenship and competed for the USA at the Olympic Games. It is different when a player from Europe comes directly to the NBA, because he does not have much time to adapt to a different culture, but also different basketball rules. Dirk was an amazing player, but the best European player I watched was Arvydas Sabonis. Unfortunately, came to the NBA when he was already 30 and destroyed by injuries. I still remember how he trashed David Robinson at the 1986 World Championships. Athletic, 7 ft 3 in tall guy who runs like a forward, thinks like a playmaker and shoots 3's like a guard.

I saw how Darko played in Serbia. The way he was made to play in the NBA was not suited for him at all. He should have been used more as a tall small forward who could fill in the gaps in plays rather than as a traditional center who dominates with his back to the basket. Didn't help that his bitterness and apathy really rubbed off on his coaches and teammates. At least he's happy now and using his likeness towards bigger better things.

@@revaljq Miličić like all other Serbian players trained a lot. Simply, basketball system here in Serbia is such that the most talented have to train the most, sometimes for 6 or more hours a day. The fact is that he expected to get minutes immediately based on his position in the draft, and he wasn’t ready to wait for his chance and that’s why he got nervous - because he wasn’t happy with his role - that was a problem when it came to his mindset, not that he wasn't ready to train hard. He was immature and unprepared for what followed. He said that people from the Pistons kept promising him that he would get a chance, and he was nailed to the bench and felt cheated. He was very disappointed and lost his will to play basketball. And Larry Brown was known for not trusting European players. Gregg Popovich brought Žarko Paspalj to the San Antonio Spurs in '89, the best European forward at the time, but Larry Brown didn't give him a chance and he returned to Europe. The same mistake was made by the Blazers with Dražen Petrović, who exploded as soon as he got a chance at the New Jersey Nets.

I still remember people saying that he might be worth taking #1 over Lebron. His skill set and size were impressive. He just seemed to have a serious lack of confidence. Played with no passion at all. Never seemed to improve when he got to the NBA. Everything he showed in Europe did not translate to the NBA at all, he was a completely different player.

He played with no passion and he lacked work ethic because he got no minutes and when he did play, he was forced to play in a very different style from which he had played in Europe. A running theme with busts is they typically don't have the work ethic and/or they like going out and partying. So I would disagree with Darko with the final quote. Not saying there aren't high drafted busts that just didn't have what it takes regardless of how hard they worked. But it seems like more often than not they were a big fish in a small pond (college) and it was mainly their talent that got them so high, but at the pro level when you only care (or barely care) about the game when you're playing it and you don't care to put in the effort off the court and in practice, rarely is it enough to take that next step to succeed at the pro level.
