I bought a bamboo steamer from a shop in my local Chinatown over 20 years ago. I recently drove by the shop for the first time in 20 years last year, and the whole plaza is abandoned and derelict now. The bamboo steamer I bought there is still being used to this day and has outlived the shop that sold it.

I am Asian. I’m from the region where Dim Sum is originated. I grew up eating out of these baskets. I’d always thought these were made by machines and never really given much thought about them. Now I have a new found appreciation for something I see every day of my life. Bravo to the craftsman. But him not wearing gloves and hacking with so much force with his fingers inches away give me so much anxiety. He knows what he’s doing but still.

@@MrMAlexC i mean it is really well made and all done by hand too. also no bs like glue or plastic so i think it's beautifully made. most shit nowdays is all plastic and automated crap that will last just long enough to warrant buying a new one after it inevitably breaks. this type of product is one where you know youll be getting your money's worth, as there clearly is a lot of craftsmanship that goes into it. its not shilling to recognize something as quality.

I love bamboo as a material. It's great for things like spatulas where it will last for literally years. Steamers too as shown, although I wonder if the need to hand make them is much of a thing at all these days. Clearly they are mass produced items given how many of them there are.
