I bought a bamboo steamer from a shop in my local Chinatown over 20 years ago. I recently drove by the shop for the first time in 20 years last year, and the whole plaza is abandoned and derelict now. The bamboo steamer I bought there is still being used to this day and has outlived the shop that sold it.

I am Asian. I’m from the region where Dim Sum is originated. I grew up eating out of these baskets. I’d always thought these were made by machines and never really given much thought about them. Now I have a new found appreciation for something I see every day of my life. Bravo to the craftsman. But him not wearing gloves and hacking with so much force with his fingers inches away give me so much anxiety. He knows what he’s doing but still.
