The older I get, the clearer it becomes that the most unrealistic thing about Batman is the amount of sleep he’s got to be functioning on. Though I assume there’s a throwaway line in canon somewhere about hyper-efficient sleep techniques learned at Nanda Parbat or whatever.

Meh, I just have it in my own head cannon that Bruce is a mutant (like those of Marvel comics) just with unrecognized super powers. Like hyper intelligence and possibly hyper stamina. Super heroes are unrealistic, that's what makes them super.

It has been stated a few times that Bruce takes micronaps and/or uses special meditations techniques. Also, the cartoon "Beware the Batman" showed him experimenting with weird chemicals (like something found in a tree frog's skin) to reduce his need for sleep (then again, that show's main theme was how disconnected Batman was from his life as Bruce Wayne.

Funny enough there are a few real world genetic mutations that let people get by on less sleep, sometimes performing at perfectly normal levels on only 4 hours a night, every night. Vague memory the comics explain it as something else but it's interesting to note that there are those who walk among us who only need 4 hours a night.

One of the few actually good things from the WWII era series, other than camp factor, is that Batman uses an appropriate sleep schedule so he can not be tired, and also not be placed under suspicion. It’s stated several times that people are incredible agitated at the fact that Bruce Wayne doesn’t get up until after twelve. Adding to the playboy mask as well as the personal health stuff.
@tonj02
@tonj02 Жыл бұрын
Yes, they explain it by saying he learned how to microsleep (I think that’s what they called it but i can’t remember if that’s accurate). They say that when he’s not doing something, he can close his eyes and sleep for any amount of minutes he has available. So he’ll sleep for like 30 minutes at a time 15 times throughout the day. Something like that.

I had an idea that expounded on this more. Have a story that forces Bruce to be Bruce 24/7. No Batman, the Bat-Family has to cover for him. The entire series deals with him having to be Bruce daily, possibly going to therapy and from a antagonist standpoint we see that his major villain actually wonder where he is after awhile. So when the Bat-Family does have a major problem, the call the Titans, Outsiders, the Justice League or the JSA. Everyone but Bruce, humble him to see that the world can exist without Batman but the story focuses on how Bruce has to be Bruce to make that daytime difference. Fight the corruption by being a donor, retraining employees ready to get fired or a severance package that can last them a year. Things that get reserved only for C-Suite Excutives, he hand the common man. That's the Batman book I'd like to see

That story of the mercenaries saving trapped people reminds me of those convicts who get sent out to fight the ever-more-devastating forest fires, risking their very lives to save the rest of us… oh, except we don’t pay them properly like those mercs. No, we treat them like trash and don’t even let them become firefighters when they get out. We won’t _let_ people with experience fighting the very deadliest fires earn a living saving our dumb lives if they’ve been in prison. We are a stupid, stupid people.

By this time I'd already given up on comics, disappointed at the growing fixation on anger, darkness, and hopelessness. It's nice to know that there still remained a writer who understood what Batman is really all about. Since the appearance of the first Batman movie in 1989, I've always been disgruntled at the lack of understanding of who Bruce Wayne really is and his true motivations. The only screen incarnation that has grasped the concept has been Kevin Conroy in the various animated series' he's worked in. The movie Batman is portrayed as angry and armed, armoured and impatient. Most of all, his greatest weapon of all, his incredible deductive intellect has been ignored. The movie versions have taken away his true humanity and, therefore, his motivation. The Alex Ross tabloid size book shows this perfectly in a series of wordless panels. A very young boy has been lured to play lookout for a group of thieves, armed with a gun he's never used. When Batman appears in front of the boy, he aims and trembles because he fears both Batman and the act of pulling the trigger. The next panels are simple shots of the two looking at each other, with the final one being Batman holding the boy in a tearful hug. Without a single word we see the humanity, the very reason for Bruce Wayne's chosen path. We know, in our hearts, that this boy has taken a brighter life path with one decision. Batman doesn't dwell in the darkness because he, himself, is a creature of that darkness. He dwells in the darkness of Gotham to try to bring light into the dark places. Swift justice tempered with the need to help. Batman is not the dominant persona, nor is Bruce Wayne. Instead, they are two halves of the same man, with the same lofty goals in mind. Justice with mercy. This is what every movie version has ignored.

I hear where you're coming from when you say if Bruce's philanthropy is so important we should see it on the page in more than asides, but I'd argue that we actually *do* see it fairly often, but it's not sinking into the fundamental core of what *makes* a Batman story in minds of casual readers and non-readers. Even those of us who were *weekly* readers in all the years when we had a glut of titles to choose from don't always track how often it showed up. But most appearances of Leslie Thompkins and many of Lucius Fox feature Wayne Foundation work in some way. We see charitable work being done overseas pretty often when Bruce uses that work as reasons to travel when the Bat has to be abroad. I'm pretty sure it functioned notably in A Death in the Family, and since you mention Cataclysm and No Man's Land, it was a throughline of that story, especially as it was Bruce Wayne, not Batman, who most effectively challenged Lex Luthor's villainous role in events. I still agree with you, that we could use more of these stories where that's the focus - where we see Bruce being the hero. But hey, "Bruce Wayne vs. Systemic Inequity" is a hard story to sell, both commercially and visually.

It's really sad that this part of Batman is never explored, sure, everyone love the Brute Batman to do action, but it really doesn't show how he helps Gotham overall. Seeing how Batman affects people of the city and actually helps even the criminals is something so much different and shows how Batman is both Batman and Bruce Wayne. The issue I see the most new Batman has, is that Batman is Batman, and never both.

Now this is the type of Batman I like to see, which is why I'm annoyed that DC took away Bruce's fortune a few years ago. It hasn't served any narrative purpose or created any interesting new stories, it's just taken away Bruce's ability to do good as Bruce. I really hope I'll get to read 24/7 one day.

8:07 See my response to that is it’s not really an issue with the character, rather it’s writers not utilizing this established aspect of the character. And more often than not the people who claim Batman doesn’t help folks with his money usually are speaking through a cultural osmosis perspective, as a sort of “gotcha” against the character, when it’s an element of him that’s been long addressed and has been depicted in certain material over the years. Not as many as I would hope but again, that lies with the writers and creators who don’t utilize this aspect of the character.

Another sotry I ahve never read and another story that I want to add to my collection. THanks, Steve. This makes twice in a year that this has happened. I watched a video about Batman issue 416 a few weeks ago and aded that gem to my collection. It's now in my top ten favorite Batman stories of all time. Though my all time favorite Batman story is still issue 430. If you haven't read it, guys, then I highly suggest that you do. My Favorite Superman story? Alan Moore's "Whatever Happened To The Man of Tomorrow?" My favorite Wonder Woman story? Issue 329, the final issue of the original series and a crisis on Infinite Earths tie in. It closed out the Pre-Crisis Wonder Woman so beautifully. Diana and Steve end up getting married. Seeing as how Tim Drake is my favorite Robin, my favorite Robin story is "Robin 2 The Joker's Wild". My favorite Oracle story is "oracle Year One" from Batman Chronicles issue 6. My favorite Nightwing story is the first 14 issues from his first monthly comic. My favorite Azrael story is Shadow of the Batman issue 24, where he as Batman, tries to locate the infant son of an illegal immigrant. My favorite Legion of Super-heroes story is Legion of Three Worlds, My favorite Justice League story is the 12 part "Justice" Series by writer Jim Krueger and artist Alex Ross. My favorite DC universe stories are pretty much every single crisis crossover, along with Kingdom Come and The New Frontier. Sorry, but when I talk about one DC and my favorite story, I tend to ramble on and talk about them all. But just one more, Justice League issue 51. 1 of The New 52/DCyu era is my favorite DIck Grayson as Robin story, partially because I liked seeing Dick fighting alongside the League and also, because it brings back warm memories of watching The Superfriends show as a kid.

One thing I feel is important to note is that this issue came out September 2002, that’s one year after 9/11. we see batman smile approvingly as Robin takes down a gang of extremists, but he’s not doing it in defense of America, but in defense of his community from an INTERNAL threat. I might be too young to have experienced the immediate surge in both patriotism and xenophobia immediately after 9/11, but I know enough to recognize it when I see it, and I’m glad I didn’t here.

The criticism seems a bit tricky. If most writers actually depicted Bruce Wayne actually doing worthwhile good works in any detail it would probably come off as clunky lore heavy fan service that Steve Shives is always complaining about. Yet clearly as motivated and depicted he should be doing such stuff or have a compelling reason he is not, so for most writers the compromise is that there is a quick line telling us/reassuring us of that sort of thing and then have him solve the problem of the week with some high stakes punching of bad guys. So it's less that it is a good criticism of Batman as a character and more like it is a limit on how most writers manage to write an entertaining Batman story and what may in some cases prevent them writing a great one. Managing to make an interesting compelling depiction of Bruce Wayne philanthropist in your Batman story adds depth to the character and can be a solid element in producing a great Batman story that most stories fail to do whatever their other strengths. Clearly this story manages to pull off that feat and pull in some other elements to make a good character study and an entertaining story overall, which makes it really great. Likewise we get told that Batman is "The World's Greatest Detective" but how much and how well is that ever depicted. It's hard to write a good detective story that shows the investigator's unique powers of detection. Like either it ends up being an easy inference that anyone could have made, some tricky but artificial cryptic crossword deduction which seems clever but ultimately is trivial, the use of some magic bit of forensic technology or such prescience that one concludes Batman figured it out because he read the script. Again it's going to be hard for most writers to write a good detective story, which is also an action-adventure super hero story. You could tell a great Batman story about "The World's Greatest Detective" (and some have I assume, I'm not much for Batman), but it would in most cases be different from a great story about Batman/Bruce Wayne as benefactor of the Gotham and so on.

Salt shaker warning in effect, so nobody better try this sort of stuff because it's better to sleep regular and healthy than meddle based on some random internet persons youtube comment done just for funsies. As I recall hearing, it's potentially possible to through some methods I don't understand nor comprehend via years of effort (no doubt in reality with some seriously negative health impacts) to train one's sleep cycle to become altered so rather than going through the usual sleep cycle, upon falling asleep a person immediately enters deep rem sleep which ordinarily per about an hours worth of sleep cycle people usually only get like what - 10 mins of? If Bats is doing something like this, then 3 hours (180 minutes) is more deep rem sleep than a regular Gothamite would get in 8 1/2 hours (about 90 minutes). Looking at this, Bats here has more than enough time to fall asleep and have some form of sleep cycle, but one which mostly still consists of that deep sleep. If Bats somehow from an early age trained himself to immediately upon falling asleep go into deep rem sleep mode, then it's probable he could keep going on three hours a night. Though, having this kind of warped, self altered and trained sleep cycle probably will come with some serious long term health hazards even at the level Bats here operates on. Doubly so due to his vigilante and billionaire, hectic lives. Especially in his later years - it's no wonder, Old man Bruce always seems to struggle with a lot of health problems. Both physically, and mentally.

So sophomoric and juvenile masquerading as "deep." What really makes this story land for me (even though on its own it would still be one of the best Batman comics ever), is that it comes on the heels of the Bruce Wayne: Murderer and Bruce Wayne: Fugitive arcs, and in the trade paperback collection it serves as part of the epilogue to the entire series. Those arcs were strongly characterised by Batman coming to believe Bruce Wayne was a liability, a shackle he had to cut off in order to continue his mission. So it's a rare Batman arc that gives him character growth, and we see how much Gotham needs both sides.

"Comics is a visual medium. If we don't see it, it doesn't happen." I get that, but we DO see it. As you said, we see him beat people up more, because comic books, yes, but we're ALWAYS seeing Wayne do things. Thing is, people think he can fix Gotham with money, but money isn't Gotham's issue. Gun runners, poverty, and drugs do not make the number of cannibals Gotham suffers from. Even VERY early on Gotham was plagued by a higher than normal amount of crime, and extreme crime, at that. They've always hinted at supernatural influence (the lovecraftian naming convention was a BIG early clue), and well.. yeah. Wayne cannot actually fix things with money. it helps, and he does pretty much single handedly keep the city's charities running, but him spending money on the gadgets and gear IS needed. You'll be thankful for the tech during the next zombie or vampire uprising, or next time he single handedly beats Darkseid. Again.

I'm curious: Did you approve of Barbara Gordon coming back as Batgirl, or did you wish she stayed as Oracle? 😏

I like her as Oracle. I'd prefer that she be Oracle in the present, and if a writer has a great idea for a Barbara Batgirl story, they can always set it in the past before Barbara gets shot. But obviously, the folks who call those shots at DC see it differently.

Batman: War on Crime (1999) I think is another example of a story similar to 24/7. Not to mention the art by Alex Ross is just beautiful to look at. I would love to see you cover this story in some fashion.

Grant, Dixon, Moench, Morrison, Grayson, and O’Neill remain the main league of Batman authors that made my love of the dark knight himself. They understood how Bruce Wayne and his family worked to save Gotham from near-corruption.

Arguably a nice starting place for the proposed "The Brave and the Bold" movie Gunn has bouncing around in his head. Get her to write for it. (And get Anson Mount to play Bruce/Batman) I'd be all in.

This is sort of the conception of the "New Look" Batman by Broome and Schwartz back in 1964: during the day, Bruce Wayne, honest businessman. philanthropist, involved citizen guarded Gotham and, at night, Batman guarded the city. I think the concept flowed out of people like JFK, Nelson Rockefeller (then governor of NYS) and people like John Lindsey and Bill Buckley, who were making noises about running for mayor of NYC in 1964. Instead of going into politics, Bruce Wayne fought supervillains.

I hope that one of the new Batman movies opens with a scene similar to this story. I think it'd fit Battinson's character arc really well.
