Polars did not diverge specifically from grizzlies. Grizzlies are only about 13k years old. Polars diverged much further back from earlier brown bears.

I am just glad we don't have cats the size of a horse. We'd wind up with windblown hairballs the size of tumbleweeds rolling across the desert highway on a moonless night, and litter box maintenance would become an unimaginable nightmare.

Reminder everyone: Panda's may be considered gentle giants, but they're still bears. Their jaws are strong enough to shatter your bones like celery. And while mostly bamboo eaters, they will eat meat whenever able like Pikas.

Unlike many quadrupeds, bears are quite adept at walking upright on their hind legs. This is the same reason why they are such effective natural hunters _(and why they don't wear long sleeve shirts.)_ Our US Constitution acknowledges this, affirming their right to bear arms.

Pinnipeds are actually most closely related to musteloids, like skunks, raccoons, red pandas and weasels. With the closest relatives of these 2 groups, then being the bears.

Polar bear adaption to a purely carnivorous diet is even more startling when compared to the Panda. Giant Panda's are still essentially carnivores despite eating almost nothing but bamboo. They get almost no nutrition from bamboo and for most of the year they essentially starve.

This made me wish that there were cat-sized bears. The reason a tiger is dangerous but a house cat isn't is purely down to size. If there were a cat-sized bear, they'd make the best pets ever. Don't get me wrong. I love bears as is. I love all animals. And I love that they exist independent of humans, and often in direct opposition to humans. But I do wish I could have a tiny pet bear.
