Tracing the Roots: Bengal's Eternal Contribution to Indian Football.
Football was introduced in India during the colonial rule by Christian missionaries and British regiments. British soldiers played football to spend leisure time, but there was no awareness about the game in India initially. This changed due to a 9-year-old boy named Nagendra Prasad Sarbadhikari, known as the "father of Indian football".
From a young age, Nagendra had a keen interest in football. His father was a Brigadier in the army, and Nagendra learned by watching British soldiers play. In 1877, Nagendra taught football to some school friends, starting Indian football's journey.
In 1880, Nagendra Prasad and Nagendra Mallick formed "The Boy's Club", India's first football organization by Indians. Subsequently, Nagendra established clubs like Wellington (1884) and the popular Sovabazar (1897), which defeated the British East Surrey Regiment 2-1 in the 1892 Trades Cup.
In 1888, Sir Henry Mortimer Durand, the Foreign Secretary of India, started the Durand Cup initially for the army, later opened to all teams. It is the world's third oldest and Asia's oldest football tournament.
And just a year after in 1889, the legendary "Mohun Bagan Sporting Club" was formed on 15th August, even before popular clubs like Liverpool (1892) and Chelsea (1905). It was founded by the sen, basu and mitra families with Bhupendra Nath Bose as President.
