The group faced many different challenges over the course of the show. Whether that be a bad guy, a horde of zombies, personal decisions, survival decisions, an attack on their home, or sometimes a mix of a few of them, but the season 2 finale “Beside the dying fire” had all of these aspects.

Two flexes on this season, 1: Herschel’s house belongs to my cousins, I used to fish on that farm with my grandpa as a kid. And 2: I used to work for the 911 center of the neighboring county and we got the ultimate spoiler the night they filmed the barn fire. Coweta 911 called us so we could ignore any calls about a fire on the property (it lies within a mile of the county line) thus telling the fans in the radio room at least partially how the season was going to end. Good times.

My boyfriend loved the Shane Arc so much, when Rick started to Fall apart after Loris death and also in Alexandria he always said “Rick is Shane-ing around” and when he saw Negan he was like “That one is completely Shaned” and even when we consume other media and a character shows a similar development he still calls it shane-ing 😂

@@BullworthGraduate agree with you, and have to say the world building and character development was. Well done in that season. For me, 6 was the peak, with 3 and 5 a close second. Why some didn't lioe 2 was low action compared to 1. Which I don't disagree with. But the reason I liked the comics was the human moments, and character interacrions, as Romero put out plenty of action and scare zombie films. I want that, pop in something from his Dead series. Watched TWD, Fear, WB, and read the comics for monents like Rick filling in Andrea on the plan for handling the saviors, Negan and Carl's talks, things like that. Sesson 2 was the best in that aspect.

Rewatching the series made me appreciate Shane's character. But the Rick of later seasons basically became Shane in many ways, distrustful of strangers, leaving people to die because they can't be trusted, etc. That makes Shane's character all the more interesting, because he was right. His relationship with Carl makes him even more interesting, much like Neegan in later seasons, as they all care for him and it adds some dimensions to his character. Andrea nailed it on the head in season 2 when she told him he was right about most things, but he had to work on his presentation and delivery. An important lesson for anyone to be sure!

I subscribe to the theory that Shane *wanted* Rick to kill him. He was always on Rick about being tougher, about being more brutal to match the changing world around him, that he wasnt strong enough to preserve Carl and Lori through the apocalypse. So he gave Rick a chance, kill him, or be killed. He kept taunting him to try to push him into killing him so Rick would toughen up. There's a fully shot and edited alternative ending to the confrontation in Better Angels where Rick finds Shane's gun to be unloaded. We can see this is true because Rick turns into what Shane wanted him to be. If Shane popped up in S5, he'd be a God among the group.
@jeanvillena9523

I used to prefer this hypothesis but now I feel it doesn't make any sense with Shane's character. He was anything but the self-sacrificing type. In all honestly, it's safe to asume that Lori's earlier conversation with him that same day had triggered very reactive emotions in Shane, reminding him of how complete as a man he felt with Lori and Carl prior to Rick's return, and how Rick's presence change everything. Shane was unhinged in this last episode and wasn't really thinking straight; he really desired to remove Rick out of the equation but didn't fully come to terms with that desire until Lori's conversation.

I really like your point about Rick refusing to be questioned in his decision making. I never really thought about that aspect, there's a small portion of Rick that's also egotistical, and wants to be in charge and his arrogance won't allow him to be questioned. A good leader does need to be questioned, Shane however *challenged* his decision every step of the way and was a danger. But Rick does ultimately learn the difference and learns to be a better leader over time.

I hope the theory that Lori was upset that Carl had to put down Shane is true rather than her being upset that Rick had to kill shame. She's had to have known for a while ever since Rick came back that Shane would eventually tell Rick that they fornicated especially after Shane went crazy at the CDC trying to assault Lori Lori always had to had that idea in the back of her head that Rick needs to kill Shane or Shayne needs to go at some point, so I really like to think that she was more horrified about the fact that Carl had to kill Walker. @@DaChristianYute it wasn’t Rick’s fault that Carl had to put Shane down at all, but I think that Lori was just super upset that her kid had to lose his innocence like that. She was overprotective with Carl… She didn’t want him to pair with Rick and Shane to look for Sophia, and he got shot. She was unsure about him handling a gun/learning to shoot, and had to be talked into it. If you go back and watch that part where Rick tells her what happened with Walker Shane, she is stunned at finding out Shane had led Rick out into the field to kill him. Then you can see that shock melt away into grief, and then guilt. She only gets angry when Rick says Carl had to put him down after he reanimated. Also, if Rick had just TOLD EVERYONE that people are going to come back after they die, Carl would have better understood what was going to happen to someone who just died. Instead, he finds out in the worst way- seeing Shane get up and come after his dad. Her baby wasn’t a baby anymore. That had to be traumatizing for Carl to have to do that. @@IIIISai Nah, we aren't tripping... Just hear me out. Yes. Lori told Shane to stay twice. The 1st time was S2 E3, IMMEDIATELY after Hershel saved Carl, thanks to Shane retrieving the medical supplies. After Hershel and Rick go to tell Patricia about Otis, Lori turns to Shane and gives a quick nod of appreciation. When Lori is at Carl's bedside, Shane comes in. He just gives her this pleading look like, "Do I still have to go? Can't I stay now?", which makes Lori feel obligated to say yes. In the next episode, Shane asks Lori for the 2nd time, saying, "Did you mean it when you told me to stay?". He asked her because he KNEW he's asked her that at the most vulnerable time he possibly could have. Shane had heard Carl was awake, and she says, yes and that he will make it. You NEVER see him go back in that room to check in on Carl again (after he returns with the supplies), so the ONLY REASON he went in there at that exact moment was to ask her to let him stay. That was the main thing he was worried about. This makes me seriously question his motives when he volunteered to go to the High school. Yes, he would do whatever he could to save Carl's life. It's obvious that he cares for him very much, but it feels like he KNEW Lori would feel indebted to him, and that is incredibly manipulative!! Go back and watch her facial expressions when he asked her if she meant it. She is caught between a rock and a hard place... what else could she say to that?? Pressuring her like that was a pretty rotten thing to do, if you ask me. Look, Lori was a poorly written character at times, to be sure. You can see it multiple times throughout her run on the show. No argument from me there. Still... that doesn't negate the fact that Shane was a dick. He always did whatever he wanted, no matter what everyone else thought, and did not care if there were consequences. The ONLY time I saw Shane do something completely selfless was when he saw Carol stumble out of the bush after she lost Sophia. He helped her clean up, and I swear it made me wonder what he was up to, lol. Rick seemed more like a Beta in S1 and S2 to me, even though everyone else saw him as the Alpha. Even Daryl said to Dale that when it comes down to it, Rick ultimately looks to Shane. Lori only tells Rick that Shane is a danger after Dale tells her what happened to Otis. TBH, Dale really should have told Rick that Shane had him in his crosshairs back in S1. Everyone can see Shane spiraling. In S2 E9, Shane tells Lori that the two of them were "a long time coming". This shows me that Shane had had his eye on Lori LONG before Rick's accident or the start of the apocalypse. God, he was manipulative in so many ways! She then tells Rick that Shane is delusional, as he truly believes they should've been together a long time ago. Also, Shane KNEW there was a chance that Rick didn't die when the machines he was hooked up to at the hospital lost power, otherwise why would he have put that hospital bed up as a barricade in front of the door to Rick's room? He never told Lori, nor did he ever try to go check on the man who was his partner, best friend, and like a brother to him! Lori is right when she says he is delusional. He is becoming more deranged by the day. Shane steadfastly believes something that is NOT TRUE, except in his own mind. This is what makes her warn Rick about him. It's that, plus the totality of everything (minus the issues she is unaware of, ie: Dale's concerning run-ins with Shane) that scares her. She knows he killed Otis and left him behind so he could get back to her and Carl. He says he loves her and that they are supposed to be together... and this puts her husband at risk!! When Rick hears this, he realizes she is right, as that is EXACTLY why he himself killed the two guys at the bar- so he could get back to his family. He says, "It was gonna be me [that lives] and not them, no matter what". She clarified the he killed the living to protect what is his, and that Shane thinks they are HIS. He thinks Rick cannot protect them and is going to get them killed. She is NOT wrong when she says he is dangerous and won't stop. They know him well and are aware that he will do whatever he wants and is unconcerned about the consequences... as I said earlier. In S2 E10, when Rick pulls the car over to talk to Shane, he admits to Rick that he killed Otis. When he hears him say that it had to be him who survived and Otis that died, Rick knows without a doubt that Shane will see it the same way with him. When Rick says it took everything in him not to beat the shit out of Shane when he realized he'd slept with Lori, Shane sees how mentally strong Rick is (compared to himself), he knows they will end up fighting, and that Rick won't go down easily. He hears his say that he will stay alive in order to keep his family alive, and Shane realizes he will have to try to kill him. Shane then sees that lone walker in the field. I think he knows that if he doesn't change course, he will end up just like that... and SURPRISE!! Shane becomes a lone walker in a field at the end of it all. When they arrive at their destination, Shane does confess that he doesn't think Rick can keep them safe, just like Lori said. Then, when he realizes Daryl has now become Rick's right hand man, he sinks even deeper. Yes, Lori inadvertently opens a can of worms when she goes to talk to Shane by the windmill, but here's the bigger picture: she goes to APOLOGIZE to him for her part. She says she is sorry for putting the two of them at odds, unnecessarily complicating things. I think she thought he and Rick had let things go and were starting fresh, as that can happen sometimes after guys fistfight. She is empathetic with him, saying she knows how hard it must be for him that he might be the biological father, but that the baby can never be his. She also thanks him from the bottom of her heart for protecting her and Carl, and for being there for her. She genuinely apologizes for things getting confused between the two of them (for him AND for her), but at NO POINT has she EVER let him think there could ever be anything between them again, and that she is committed to Rick. Her coming to him to thank him and to apologize for the bad times IN NO WAY means she wants him back. I do not understand why someone would think it does. To me, it seems like the entire group, minus Shane, wants to move forward and get along. She was being the bigger person by going to him in order to clear the air. It is NOT her fault that he assumed there could be something still there. Shane just heard what he desperately wanted to hear. When someone assumes and doesn't communicate to be clear, it makes it incredible difficult to have a conversation in the future. It is immensely frustrating and does nothing to help the situation, and it may make that person feel unable to approach them again. Shane wasn't wrong about everything. He was spot on about stopping the search for Sophia after coming to the conclusion that she was probably already dead by then, about what to do with Randall, about the walkers in the barn, and about Rick being more concerned about the hostage than with his own son. He is simply too aggressive and refuses to listen to others' viewpoints... then he goes and does what he wants anyway. He is headstrong, and is NOT a team player. Add all these issues up, and take into consideration that he is becoming increasingly unhinged, and you've got a BIG problem!!

This finale got me goosebumps all the time. It's phased perfectly, from Rick relying on Carl what it takes to survive and people doing their own ways to get out of the farm and get's reunited on the road. The Moment Rick says that they're all are infected is one of the most unique twist I've seen on a Zombie Virus concept. This Finale is hella underrated and got overshadowed by the "Better Angels" episode.

I don’t see what Lori said to Shane as intending to play Shane against Rick. Lori apologized out of guilt and Shane took what she said as a sign to get rid of Shane. I also never felt Shane ever loved Lori but was infatuated or fixated on her and Carl during a traumatic point in his life AKA when the world fell apart.

thats a nice way of looking at it, he didn't love her but shes the last good thing he had after the apocalypse, his purpose, he did tell rick that but rick clearly wasn't listening enough to have a proper talk to shane, anyways i believe lori was playing shane, i think she was crying because she was sorry that he was gonna die, because before the scene and episode she talks to shane, she manipluates rick to want to kill shane, when rick killed those men in the bar, Lori literally uses those sentences but puts shane in the equation and makes rick want to kill shane, if she was apologizing genuinely and not because she wanted shane to die, why didn't she just bring rick and shane together and have a three way conversation, why didn't she tell rick to call off his villian view of shane, rick only didn't listen to shanes leadership eyes because lori told him not to, indirectly, or directly, rick was blindly listening to lori, and that's slowly made him against shanez anyways as for your comment yea she didn't care about shanes future, just wanted closure before he died, i think so atleast, they didn't explore lori enough

I wish that Sarah Wayne Callies hadn’t been written so shitty in S2. She’s a great actress, and a loyal, genuine woman who has spoken openly about the bullshit female actors endure. Thrifty, if you see this comment, I implore you (or anyone) to read the Op-ed Sarah wrote discussing how actresses are often labeled as “difficult to work with,” when they are simply advocating for treatment equal to their male counterparts. I also enjoyed her interview with Jon on his podcast. Her loyalty to Frank Darrabont is admirable and beautiful. No one will ever convince me that S2 Lori wasn’t written to be hated because of that loyalty to Frank and her strength of character. Once again, another entertaining, enjoyable, relaxing video from you, Sir Thrifty. Thank you! 🙌

I'd say Beside The Dying Fire is my probably overall favorite season finale in the show, followed by Last Day On Earth, The First Day of the Rest of Your Life, Conquered, and A (haven't watched season 11 yet nor did I see the season 6 finale until 2-3 months before the season 7 premiere aired on tv). Between the group losing the farm from the zombie attack, Rick revealing everyone is infected, everyone mistrusting Rick and being unsure what to do next, Rick's speech followed by the prison reveal, and Michonne's first appearance this episode had a lot packed into it and really left the audience on cliffhanger for the next season. This episode feels like Too Far Gone when the group loses the prison while in this episode the group loses the farm. I do wish Otis's wife Patricia and Beth's boyfriend Jimmy were mourned more in the next season cause we knew about them the least out of the farm group and they're just forgotten after this episode. I also remember being frustrated with Carl and Lori being upset with Rick killing Shane, though I heard Lori was more shocked with Carl shooting zombie Shane, and with Carol telling Rick to do something when he has a lot on mind already and she expects him to have the answer.

I always have and always will stand by the fact Shane and Andrea had some real good chemistry, and they had bonded a lot in this season. Shane trained and, they hooked up, etc.. But my *favorite* scene of them together was outside the church when Andrea confronted Shane about them being the "odd men out," and they should leave together and abandon the group. The show *should* have done this, in my opinion. Yes, it was only the second season and it would have been a major deviation from the comics, but it would have been a smart and confident move for the show to start its first real spin-off. Just imagine if Shane and Andrea had their own 6 episode mini series that showed their relationship growing and whatnot. And even better, explained what they had been doing throughout the apocalypse. Imagine if Shane and Andrea showed back up in the season 6 finale as Saviors, but their series explained how they became Saviors. And all throughout seasons 7 and 8, Shane and Andrea were conflicted by seeing their old friends. They could have been Rick's "inside men" within the Saviors. Ah, what could have been.

This is one of my favorite eps in the whole show. 2B is awesome all the way through. I'm glad you took a break from season 6 to do this one. I also like how you combined it with Better Angels. They really do stand together as one long finale. Similar to the last two of season 5. With this approach, I think it would be cool to do a video about the 2 Governor standalone eps in season 4. Live Bait and Dead Weight. I think that would be a great analysis. The Governor is trying to turn over a new leaf just as RIck is. They parallel each other in many ways. I think you would do a great job analyzing these 2 eps. I'm also looking forward to Here is Not Here. Still also would love a video on the season4 premiere. I know that isn't a popular one but I think you could do a great video with the them of how the ep showed the first glimpse of civilazation restarting. Or some kind of preview to Alexandria. Keep up the good work!!

Fun fact about to show down with Rick and Shane. Apparently in the original screenplay the twist in the beginning of the season finale was that when Rick checked Shane's gun it had no bullets in it showing that. Shane never intended to kill or shoot Rick despite his antagonizing and provocation which added like another layer to the scene, but they had a hard time working out the logistics of it and the pacing so they cut that.

The two guys from from Randall’s group not only were from Philadelphia(my hometown and CRMs) but they told Rick that survivors went to Nebraska and the islands. Padre is the island possibly coming in Fear and World Beyond was set in Nebraska. I wonder if when Rick hears the alliance of the three if he will remember those guys. It always stuck out to me and I wonder could Randals group possibly be like Jadas group. Did they trade with CRM or maybe they were under covers like Huck was.

I think Rick in the episode(s) you covered did think about his family but as things got clear to him he started to grasp that no one is safe with Shane, and like in the comics I think some parts are exactly of Rick just trying to protect his family and everyone else happens to follow and mostly live and make it, you definitely see that in earlier seasons but it becomes more so that everyone within that group is family because of their bond which the prision imo solidifies all their bonds for the rest of the show :)

Random question. I notice you have a filter (old video or something) on the video clips of the show. Is that to avoid a copyright strike? I'm asking because I was wanting to make a music video using some clips and am trying to figure out how to not get a copyright strike. I understand Fair Use covers some things but that is a bit murky at times. If you alter footage, does that keep you from getting a strike?
