My dad and his sister planed to leave VN by boat in the 80s but got arrested and sent back to central VN. My friend's 2 uncles on the other hand succeed took the boat onto the ocean but never make it to Hong Kong, the boat sank somewhere in south china sea. This video is so amazing, it reminds me how Vietnamese survived through such time. Thanks Kyle.

Sadly, the United Nation estimated between 400k to 800k boat people were lost at sea (pirates, storms, starvation, thirst, cannibalism etc).

I can't imagine what life was like for these men when they were children. Many people in Asia, have survived the most heartbreaking situations to survive. The will to survive and find a new life for themselves is inspiring. I pray that they are able to find healing from being separated from their homes. Survival brings out the best and worst of us to try and find a new life.

Although I'm sad that Giap had to go through such a terrible experience, I am happy that he ended up in my hometown. I knew him well from '83-'87, and he was always a very positive person and a good friend. Luckily our paths crossed again a little while back, and I'm happy to have him as my friend once again. This was a very moving film.

So moving, scary & inspiring. I asked my husband…can u imagine going thru this at age 11 or 12? Unfathomable! Yet they survived and seem strong and successful today. I see similar stories from people escaping Cuba to US, from Europe to Jerusalem, it goes centuries back. Pray it is over and never necessary to have a boats of people looking for freedom, because the whole world will be free.

I thank the universal ''god these three made it. In Houston, in the late 70's and early 80's, we had neighbors who made it from Viet Nam to the US via Taiwan and the couple who owned and ran the laundry we used were also from Viet Nam. My memories of both these families are full or respect, admiration and thankfulness.

This is amazing. I was one of the refugees in Pulau Bidong in early 80’s. I was 15 at the time. I heard so many stories about how people died on the way to find new land. I always said this to myself “ I would never “ vượt biên “ again “.

Gone to jail in Bến Tre first attempt and escape again landed in Pulau Bidong 1980. Even at a very young age I had already anti communist. You guys were blessed to landed in Hồng Kông, our boat were robbed four times by the Thái Lan pirate and we were without food and drinks for ten days.

We arrived by boat to Indonesia. Australia accepted us as refugees in 1979. I think as I grew older, the boat trip & having to leave a war torn country to find freedom in a strange new world does leave some scars on us all. There is the unspoken sadness, the fear and the hope that we will live & live a better life. We were stranded at sea for days & weeks too, people dying & being thrown off the boat. These events are very traumatic, especially as we were all so young. How brave these 3 friends survived & how they travelled alone with no adult or parents to look after them is a miracle. So happy they made it & was given another chance. To all boat refugee people, be kind to yourselves & seek help for your mental health as these events are traumatic & will affect you in some way - and that’s ok. We are human after all. ❤️

Great video Kyle, your best one yet. We left by boat too around 78 or 79 so I'm around their age yet I remembered very little compared to them. Our camp was in Indonesia and we finally settle in the US. What was amazing about our journey was that my parents took all 6 kids with them and we all survived. Attacked by pirates too. Only thing I really remembered is that I jumped into the water while being attacked not knowing how to swim. My brother said he found me in the water hanging on to a something that was floating. I think a follow up story would be great. Did they ever found each other after Hong Kong, how did all 3 grow up and what are their lives now. It would be great.
