One huge goldfish! This just goes to show you how large a goldfish can get given the right conditions and water parameters. This giant goldfish now needs a pond to live out the rest of her life.
Goldfish need a large tank and good filtration for the rest of their lives.
How big can a goldfish grow? Well this is certainly larger than your average goldfish but I think there are even bigger goldfish out there.

In Phoenix, Arizona, USA people often dump their goldfish into the canal system where they go feral. When my brother was in high school he would go to where the canals were being drained for winter repairs to scoop up BIG goldfish. He had to get there before the egrets, herons, and coyotes ate them all. They were common varieties (the extreme fancy fins and googly eyed ones seldom survived) in the usual colors, We had solids, pinto, tri-colors in gold, black and white. They were all at least 6 inches long, some were 10+ inches long. He kept them in our swimming pool, which was chlorine-free for the winter, and sold them to nurseries as "pond goldfish" for their customers. It was a lucrative seasonal business for him. One of our cats - a Burmese mix - learned how to fish. He stood on the top step, in several inches of water, and waited until a fish swam under him. Then he went totally under water, grabbed them with the claws of doom, and would erupt out of the pool with a fish in his jaws.

Very interesting. Does the canal still have goldfish?

I’m from Arizona, and I will confirm Goldfish can only eat and shit. When you release it, it’ll get bigger and bigger, if you release it back, it’ll get bigger still. I think there’s some carp in the Tempe Town Lake.

@Mountain_Aquatics Yes. Arizona has, I would assume, thousands of miles of canal systems. The systems are quite impressive and pretty cool. You'll find goldfish, carp, turtles, and all sorts of aquatic life in our canals. People dump goldfish and red eared sliders in the lakes, ponds, and canals here all the time, and they seem to survive pretty well. It's crazy.

About 10 years ago I rented a place with a garden pond. Nothing in it apart from newts and a resident toad (which you only saw when it rained and he came out to get some rain drops). I decided to put some gold fish in, all about 4-5 inches long and normal goldfish shape, put a dozen in and they were fed regularly on pellets, although there were plenty bugs and and weeds etc already in there. Eventually it came time to move about 3 years later and I was told I had to empty the pond of fish. I had two big berthas about the same size and shape as yours and also the other smaller ones were also crucian carp shape. They had also bred whilst in there. I managed to get most of the fish out, but it was impossible to get all of them unless I drained the pond which was impractible.

Actually Goldfishes grow up to 35 - 40 cm. My biggest have grown past 30 cm. They live outside all year in my pond in the south of Norway! 🐟😄🐟😄🐟 They are all common goldfish, though som has a little longer fins..... Many colours, red, red/hvite, red/white/black, all white, dark brown, black, yellow and shubunkin. Have no idea how many they are...... The pond is all natural, about 10 by 20 meters and about 1 meter deep. I feed through the summer, but in the winter it is covered in ice and snow. The oldest fishes are close to 10 years now. I love how hardy they are! ❤❤

Goldfish and carp are related but not the same species. You will never get a goldfish over 5 or 6 pounds. You can however get large colourful carp that look like goldfish, but they would have the “whiskers” that goldfish do not have

There is something I still don't fully understand after constant reading, watching videos, talking to people etc. Will all the wild-type bodies (Wakin, Common, London/Bristol Shubunkin) get to this size if you raise them in a large tank? (say 4ft long 240L). If not, is it OK for them to stay smaller or is this damaging to their health? I'm interested in keeping these breeds but not if they'll eventually need to be rehomed due to their size. It's very common to hear that keeping wild-type bodied fish a smaller size is damaging to their health. Fish room videos don't really tell me if these types of fish stay in their tanks and current stocking levels forever. Would love to know your thoughts please! 😁 Thanks so much.
@Mountain_Aquatics
@Mountain_Aquatics Жыл бұрын
That’s a really good question. A lot of it is more to do with the quality of water rather than just the size of the tank. But a larger tank means you can easily maintain better water quality so it usually goes hand in hand. I dint think this goldfish would have ever got this deep in body from being in a tank but quite possibly would have gotten the same length. The tanks in my fish room are 4ft tanks of that helps
