Maybe another filter, even a sponge filter in the middle for more oxygen, and more plants wpuld help out the pond even more!

How do they get away with not using a net to protect the fish? New to the channel and really enjoying it so far. Thanks for sharing your hard work 👍🏻
@Mountain_Aquatics11 күн бұрын
Good question! Well firstly we don’t know that it will never have an issue with herons, but so far it hasn’t been a problem. Herons like to land away from the pond and then sneak over so the don’t startle the fish. This pond is built high with high walls so a heron would have to land right in the wall. Also the water is far below the top of the wall. Never say never, but so far it’s working.

The reason why the fish are so drab in color is because the algae has blocked all the sunlight from them and their water quality is so bad. Being exposed to sunlight, clean water, and healthy food should restore the vibrant color of the fish.

What protects the fish from Herons etc?
@Mountain_Aquatics20 күн бұрын
I think the design of this pond does. Herons like to usually land away from a pond and then walk over to creep up on the fish and also make sure that the area is safe. This pond has such a high wall around it that the heron would have to land directly on to the wall. Not impossible but less likely. Then the water line is quite far below the top of the wall, it would be a stretch for the heron to reach. It’s not impossible, but it makes it more difficult for the heron. The pond is also now covered by CCTV so the owners can monitor it at all times. There have been no issues with herons so far, if there ever are then we will look to address it straight away. I hope this answered your question 🙂
