Seismologists say there's a 37 percent chance a magnitude 8.0 or 9.0 earthquake could hit Oregon in the next 50 years. It's hard to imagine the power of these earthquakes. So, let's break it down with sand

At the intensity of powerful earthquakes you will likely wake up shaken so no worries just run uphill is water is nearby.

Kind of a shitty explanation. Would be nice to know what the higher magnitudes are capable of destroying. Grains of sand tell me squat....

A magnitude 10.0 hasn't happened, so this is much more realistic so your question is ironic. And an earthquake scale is fixed.

they said the one in japan slowed the spin of the earth a small amount,this planet spins at exactly 1000 mph,if it gets real violent,it could cause serious shit all around theworld,that's how nutty it is,this is where ignorance is bliss,no bs,i'd move, piss on the money,piss on the loss,life is one time,calamity is just a word unless you're right in the middle of it,no thanks

Nice and easy way to say it like it is. I was stationed in California for several years. I could not get used to the ground moving. Despite being offered a very nice compensation package that would dwarf my military officer's retirement, I stayed on with the USAF and moved away from California. Everyone has choices and I chose to not stay in California, simply because of the earthquakes. It was not so much about the earthquake threat as much as the earthquakes that kept happening.

Perfect explanation for common people, I think in my Country Valdivia's 1960 earthquake was magnitude 10, the more strong earthquake in history, change the geography of the zone subsidence and uplift, even Rinihue lake was landslide damming.

Weren't many of the ancient earthquakes on the Cascadia subduction zone off the coast of OR closer to 9.5? Given your demo, it seems like rounding is not a good idea. The quake likely to hit Oregon could easily be the largest by far in recorded history.

Don't worry toomuch about the numbers. A 7.1 we experienced did damage, but didn't kill anyone. A 6.3, six months later, killed 185 people, Including my friends, seriously injured thousands and flattened the whole city. Including my house, of course. Have extra water at hand always, look after each other.Kia kaha.

If we have air raid sirens that are old why can't they be.refurbished to.sou md when a (p-wave) is.detected, the country Mexico already has it in place and it does work, there are videos of the alarm sounding and people rushing into a square just before the quake.strikes.

thats actually kind of cool, I feel like there should be a P-wave emergency phone alert thing set up in Cascadia for this, it might help save some lives someday.

You can survive these events just educate yourself have a plan and practice the plan, a bug out bag, converting the wooden home that can withstand the shaking with solar power.That way you can still live out of the home. The early warning system is in place that give you about 2 minutes to get out of a brick building which in itself saves tens of thousands of lives because several thousand of these structures will have full failure.Get to know the neighbor and learn how to live off the land for some learn how to use a compass how camp all these are important and can be learned easily.

The chances that a 9.0 earthquake happening are the same chances of a person getting shot, dying in a airplane crash or a terrorist attack. The chances are small and there hasn't been a earthquake like that in the Pacific Northwest in at least 300 years. So it's pointless to worry about something that may never happen in your lifetime but we definitely should be prepared for one, especially by modernizing our infrastructure to withstand such a magnitude of a earthquake.

I agree that you cant live your life in fear, but if you knew that it was only a matter of time until something absolutely catastrophic happened it would be hard to keep that thought from creeping in from time to time. Also you are so right about preparation, Its going to be so painful to see so many lives about to be ruined from something that could be mitigated better

wow. what a not helpful at all video. how many pieces of pepperoni pizza is a 9.0 earthquake? And why is this guy not looking at the camera? You couldn't figure out to put the teleprompter or cue cards right next to the camera in 2015? I've never been on a tv set and I know that. bottom line, I clicked the link because I want to know how likely I am to die in an earthquake, not because I want some arbitrary comparison to sand.

jeff,just imagine most of the California desert area,which is damn near all of it ,starts shaking and moving violently,the ground turns to liquid,you sink,literally,sink,when it stops how every far you go down,no one will find you,there will be no funeral,cause you are already planted,this is not an exaggeration ,I've read volumes on this topic,those who are family men and women should get out now,you can always move back after the property taxes are gone,can't tax a scrap pile,this happening is a thousand times worse that tornadoes, we have here in Kansas,i've been in three but people survive,it will hit three blocks away and wipe out everything and leave other buildings alone,but a major earthquake that is off the scale obliteration,god bless ,my personal opinon I would take a hike till later,think on it

its hard to predict narrow ranges for large geologic processes, basically this quake could happen in aa year or 100 years or anywhere in between but the odds it happens within that window is like 80 percent or something crazy scary like that

If you think about it the science way, you would need to wait another 77 years for a 9.0 earthquake to hit on the west coast, and about 62 years for a 7.0 to hit again
@maverick9708
@maverick9708 6 ай бұрын
it's funny too, because sometimes quake/volcano will operate in such a broad scale that its impossible to pick a narrow range to prepare for, only that it is certain to happen in 2 years or 200 years but it will be in that range with 99% certainty and its terrifying just how little people care about mitigating the immense suffering that we know is going to arrive
