@@jasonk125 He does come off a bit as wanting a particular answer. But there's no "there" to get to that is really that comparable. If the question is whether Tesla or Waymo/Cruise will get to L5 robotaxis, Waymo/Cruise already won by some definition. And with a massive effort maybe they could scale out to most major cities, but there are so many question marks: how much manual work is there in expanding to a new area? Of course the mapping process has to be highly automated, but I bet there is still a ton of manual work and QA done for each mile of road being mapped. Then what's the cost of keeping those maps updated at all times? Next problem is, can they reduce the cost and energy consumption of their hardware? The latter will be very important if they want to base it on an EV. And who's going to make their custom EVs really? It's going to take years to sort out a partnership. And if they're massively profitable would the partner accept that? Then there's the upfront cost of producing these taxis, they'd have to be pretty sure the economics work out before taking that on (or borrowing at today's higher interest rates). Due to the vertical integration and scale of EV production, large fleet and gradual upgrade of an ADAS system to L4 over many years, I predict Tesla will reap a vast majority of the profit from self-driving cars for many years to come.
@beck99o2 жыл бұрын
@@martindbp Good points. Waymo/Cruise have the big issue of the upfront cost of their taxis + ongoing costs of maps etc. So they will have to charge a decent amount for rides to start making back that money. It could be years before they break even and then profit may not be massive for them. In the mean time, if Tesla solve consumer FSD, they could take market share of taxi rides in those cities as they would be able to charge less. Will be interesting to see how things go over next 5 years, I think we all want self driving cars to be a thing and if there are multiple options it will only be good for all of us. Competition always benefits the consumer.

Your conversations with James Douma are always worthwhile. I have high hopes for FSD as a Tesla owner and shareholder, but I fear it's a harder problem, and will take longer, than many expect. I drive between Boston and northern Vermont, 189 miles each way, almost every week. It's virtually all rural Interstate driving with relatively little traffic and in nearly ideal driving conditions. I tried using Autopilot during the first few weeks after I bought the car last year, but gave up on it. I just had to fight it too much (passing an 18-wheeler, for instance, where I'm trying to give it extra space by moving to the left edge of my lane, but AP insisting I stay much closer to the truck in the center of my lane, then shutting down due to my fighting it too often). I always use cruise control to avoid going too fast, but I find it very frequently does startling slowdowns for no reason. Last week it dramatically slowed from 75 - I looked at the screen and for some reason it thought the speed limit had dropped to 35 when it was actually 70. Fortunately there was no one behind me. (The speed limit was never 35 there, and I was nowhere near another road or exit. It clearly had the correct speed limit the prior dozens of times I drove that segment of Interstate highway, so I have no idea why Tesla thought it had changed.) Does anyone know how much of the tech for FSD is being incorporated in AP and cruise control? Maybe I'm being unfair when I take strange behavior like this as a sign that Tesla's software, and therefore FSD, has a long way to go.

But there's an issue which breaks the math. Once the humanoid robot gets really good, it will replace most human workers, not just blue collar. Full stack big #11. What is needed to accomplish this? What does James think 11 is released? Given his current drive, it was cool to hear about the road curvature and surfaces as a technical calculation to be solved even more. How does the computer see (interpret) vs how we see vs what is displayed? I love the technical stuff as well as the big picture. I think everyone watching wants the big prize of self-driving cars to happen. What do you and James think about these version 10 updates? They look very sharp. Each incremental update seems to add more personality to the car. Watching Frenchie, Dirty Tesla, and Chuck Cook videos for the last two years has really helped me understand each incremental improvement. I'm very bullish on pure vision. James is right that Tesla's data they hold onto is the big story. We as consumers/drivers are just seeing the results of their hard work. Love your patience and thoughtfulness Dave and how you always let the guest be the star of the episode. Keep kicking butt. I understand Q2 had some issues, but currently FSD beta is looking better and better. So much to look forward to these next 6 months. Exciting, thrilling even, is the thought. The value proposition for FSD in the commercial trucking space would seem to be huge because the cost benefit of eliminating the driver is objectively determinable and competition will drive this cost benefit. Whereas in the private vehicle space the value proposition is more subjective and more subject to individual convenience/safety preference. For example, I am 80 y/o and really would appreciate having an FSD chauffeur relieve me of driving stress on a long trip as compared to when I was in my 20’s looked forward to the thrill of driving/control. For me those days are long gone…

Just a bit of a breather from Tesla. A suggestion would be to highlight Mark Cuban's pharma company charging astronomically lower prices for certain essential medicine. Not from a valuation standpoint, but in why this would be great for consumers, and for people in dire need for these medication

I agree on the performance on curvy roads but the number of phantom breaking events on clear open interstate and two lane highways in actually dangerous. My model Y with FSD had so many extreme phantom breaking issues that I couldn't use FSD or even cruse much of the time on our trip to Denver from Rapid City and back over the past weekend. The breaking with absolutely no reason was abrupt and extreme at least two dozen times.

I think the starlink transceiver actually points north to avoid interference with geostationary satellites. I’ve only heard this and hope it won’t limit “static” flat mounts for mobile applications. If it is phased array, maybe it can point away from the equator.

Haven’t they been allocated different frequencies?

36:55. The problem is, even if you solve for "commercial" FSD, using a gratuitously over sensored approach, you're going to be in a very bad spot if Tesla comes along and solves it with commodity hardware. Say you're a tax operator, do you want to spend $150k+ per vehicle, plus whatever licensing, to be in a sandboxed solution, when you can have a generalized solution which is continuously improving for a fraction of the price? The only way I see the "commercial" approach having any real legs, is if it can get to market significantly before Tesla, so that it's entrenched before Tesla manages to crack the problem.

I’ve been super impressed with fsd but for some reason this latest release was a huge step backwards for me… everyone else has been raving about it

That’s normal and will continue. It needs to learn and everyone’s environment is different.

How does FSD handle a negatively banked curve?

Dave, quick question.. if you were getting paid in stock.. would you want the current price to be $200 or 600?

Could James take a look at Wayve who are also using cameras only.

I think the robot is part of master plan part 3. Tesla has hirering problems in low class jobs. So they use their employes with something like google glas or maybe even cameras in the factory and autopilot neural net to train the robots to replace factory workers. It would allow them to scale faster and drive down production cost over time.

Question for James: how close is the development of FSD to the ‘tipping point’ when the IE engine will be answering unique questions that arise by developing new logic that provides the solution??

Doesn't Boston Dynamics have robots that do bipedal locomotion?
