I'll be 58 tomorrow, so I'm a bit passed middle aged, but I am nearing the completion of what I'm calling my musical midlife crisis. No, it doesn't feel late to me. In fact, the timing is perfect as I'm enjoying early retirement. I recently formed a three piece country/rock cover band after 12 years performing only acoustic music. I gigged heavily before that for 26 years in clubs. With the new band we've acquired all new gear and instruments, the manifestation of my musical midlife crisis. The latest gear is my pedalboard. I purchased the Pedaltrain Classic Jr so I could have plenty of room to space out my minimal amount of pedals with room for expansion if needed. But I enjoyed each new pedal so much that each one inspired another. Now I have 11 pedals and find myself enjoying them so much that I want even more. But I'm out of room and considering a bigger board. My current pedals are an Electro-Harmonix EHX 2020 tuner, a Keeley Neutrino envelope filter, a Boss GE-7 equalizer, a Boss Blues Driver BD-2, an Ibanez Tube Screamer TS808 Reissue, a Keeley Compressor+, a Boss DD-3T Digital Delay, a Boss TR-2 Tremolo, a Boss PH-3 Phase Shifter, an MXR Analog Chorus, and a Boss RV-6 Reverb. Now I'm wanting a looper pedal but have no room. I enjoyed this video! Hook loop love!

I went through a serious Pedalboard obsessive phase during lockdown and built not one, not two but THREE boards using the Pedaltrain range. I started off building a brand new grunge-themed board first, using a Classic 2 for a couple of bands I play in, squeezing on a Dunlop Wah Jr, tuner, 3 drive pedals, a fuzz, a boost, as well as an MD200, and a TC reverb and delay. I even squeezed on an MXR Tap that feeds into the Flashback 2. That was so much fun that I then decided to rebuild my main gigging band board (I've been using an old Diago Showman for many years) using another Classic 2. I ended up actually downsizing my old board and squeezing pedals up; the Pedaltrain app was super-useful for planning these boards. That was a very classic rock themed board, and the one I'll probably use the most, so I opted for the tourcase version. It's built like a tank and will survive being thrown in car boots and kicked around in pubs. Finally, I started jamming with a new band recently, who do Americana type stuff, so naturally that needed yet another new board, but this was smaller than the other two. I used a Classic Jr this time as I was using fewer pedals. Everything has been powered using the pro-grade GigRig modular power supply to get the cleanest, isolated power to my pedals. This was the biggest improvement I made over previous boards, and the difference clean, isolated power makes to your pedals is very noticeable. It's expandable too if I decide to build a bigger board. Thoroughly recommended. This comment has not been sponsored by anybody, oh and Hook, Loop Love!

Hook: the title of this video; Loop: the awesomeness of this video; Love: the resulting feeling after watching this video. I'm a Nova aficionado, too. Perfect size, best form factor in most situations! Also, fwiw, I've flown with a multi-fx in one of the soft cases with a Metro16 and it turned out just fine! It was inside a suitcase, but what I mean is that you don't HAVE to get the hard case for smaller boards if you don't want to!

Nice video, very informative, like all your videos, thnx. I found the PedalTrain boards really flexible, they've got a size to fit everyone's needs and I built up progressively as I added more. I've got the TERRA 42 now. It's HUGE, but I've managed to fill it :-). I have everything I need on there, including a 4-socket mains power strip and 10-output 9V_12V power block underneath. Stereo setup - one mains plug and the whole pedal board powers up. 4 x 20-foot flying signal and control leads to backline. BOSS GT-10 driving matched stereo Marshall combos on one side (although sometimes I don't even bother with these, I run the GT-10 stereo outputs straight into the desk), BOSS GA-FC driving BOSS KATANA 2x12 100W MkII on the other side, wah pedals, switched volume/expressions pedals, Whammy DT, Univibe, RC-3 looper, BOSS FS-5 (x2) and FS-6 (x1). Input matrix to separate, switch, swap or mirror stereo inputs across the two separate channels, based on 4 cross-connected DONNER micro AB-Y switches. Everything fits into the soft carry case along with all guitar cables and DI-boxes. About the size of a standard guitar hard case - a couple of kgs heavier maybe. Load-in, setups and teardown a breeze now, I can be up and running or torn down in about 10 minutes :-). (Hook loop love)

Hook Loop Love! Bought a Metro24 to upgrade from a Nano+ and then returned it for a Classic Jr (mostly because of the size of the newer power supply) just before this video came out it seems.This was a great explanation and comparison of the sizes. I kind of miss the compactness of the smaller board if I’m honest, but hard to beat the versatility for my at home practice. I think I’ll keep the Nano+ around to have a more portable option too. Great content. Subscribed!

I used to use a Warwick Rockboard Stadium Pedalboard with flight case it was huge, I am 6ft 2" and it almost stood as tall as me. I sold it about ten years ago when I had to start carrying it myself and my wife said words like " get that bloody monstrosity out of the house." I now have a much more manageable sized one (11 pedals including a Morley Wah), it has multi coloured led that can be set as a solid colour or it can randomly throw them out, which is the setting that I use. I have had to change a few of my favourite pedals for smaller versions for real estate but the wah and my EHX Synth9 have to stay. It has meant a lot of time with hook loop love. 😎🎙🎸✅

@@guitarplayer1994 I ended up buying a Classic 2 shortly after posting this… even though the actual board is pretty light, I was shocked how heavy the whole thing was once I got all my pedals, PSU etc on. Currently only playing at home, but when I get to play gigs again, the backpack will be a definite consideration!
@guitarplayer1994
@guitarplayer1994 2 жыл бұрын
@@malcolmgordon2988 Well exactly that's the reason I was excited. I have a classic 1 and it's loaded with stuff that I kind of only rarely use. I mostly use my reverb as always on (or not, depending on the musical situation), my Fulltone OCD and mostly my volume pedal. I'm considering getting an HX Stomp and a nano so I can gig with the HX Stomp, the fulltone OCD and another switch to expand the HX Stomp. I would definitely miss the volume pedal though ... I don't want to carry that much weight anymore ...

I use a novo 32 with both flight and soft cases depending on the gig. It’s a fab bit of kit, but does take up a fair amount of space on stage, especially as the guitarists both use them too! For acoustic gigs I have the metro, which works great too.

hook, loop, love! :) I've only recently got into pedals and recently realized how important the "convenience factor" of a pedalboard would be, even though I only play at home in my bedroom... I'd forgotten I even have certain types of pedals (e.g. wah) since setting up the whole kerfuffle and putting it all away again was such a hassle. streamlining / removing barriers really helps my scatterbrain focus. investing in the "unsexy" utilitarian gear (like a precise strobe tuner) has become exciting to me, haha! I didn't know products like the rucksack even existed, so my middle aged heart got all warm and fuzzy at that. I used to think "why would I spend that much on a pedalboard when I can get more effects instead?" but really, I've kinda had it backwards all along. not 100% certain what my "must haves" are yet on a board (aside from tuner, EQ, boost, looper), but I'm leaning towards something between 18" - 24" wide, with no more than two rows. goal is to have something reasonably sized so I can bring it to my friend's when the pandemic is no longer an issue, big enough to experiment, but not so big that I get overwhelmed by fiddling with the pedals and forget to just play... so all that said, I think I'd go with the Classic Jr. and the rucksack. I like that the hook / loop tape is included and I would want a permanently mounted power supply. I'd have to check the dimensions to see, but I think I could squeeze a regular size wah in beside the Classic Jr. otherwise I'd step up to the Classic 1. time to look up the internal dimensions of the pocket and measure when I get home, I guess? :) I think writing this long comment helped me work out which one to settle on. I'll load up that app to try different sizes / layouts and that'll clinch it. thanks for the helpful video and cheers to everyone on their pedalboard adventures!

Hook Hoop Love... I am waiting for a delivery of the Terra 42... as I have a lot of pedals so I can create different pedal boards on a daily basis so I won't be sticking down any pedals on the board but will use the fuzzy side of the material to stop any pedals from slipping off. Though after seeing your vid I might need some risers for volume and wha pedals. You always do great videos. Thanks again for this one.

Fantastic Video Andy! With every successive board you showed I was like, yeah - that'll be just about right for me.. I can just get a pedal or 2 more on that one. I've had all sizes in full flight cases, bags and carboard boxes. It's so tough to leave a pedal off a board or basically, be in the least bit sensible. I commit, make the cables, fix on the tie wraps and decide its perfect... then someone sends me another pedal and aaaaarrrrrrgggghhhhhh! where does it stop! Which board would i get? I'll lose sleep over that one. Stay well and groovy dude.

HL♥️. For the same reason Andy decides at the end he wants the next bigger size, I recently switched from a pedaltrain board to a Holeyboard. When I want to try out adding something new or bigger, I don't want to have to contemplate buying a new board. Instead I just move a couple screws and it's bigger. I switched the smaller pedaltrain board to my bass where I don't use as many pedals.

I'm thinking probably the novo 32 or the Terra. Reason being is I run multi-delay etc pedals and they take up a lot of space. I also have a large loop switcher and that takes up a lot of real-estate. Add the selection of drives and modulation and well.... it's gotta be a big board for me lol. Oh and hook loop love

Tbf when it comes to this stuff it all depends on what you need. If you NEED the space that the biggest board provides because you genuinely need every pedal you can fit on it to play all the songs in the set then that’s still the right one. I like using 2 classic 2’s, got my main board then a secondary one with extra stuff if the gig warrants it, plus then it’s easier to position the mic stand between them rather than off to the side of a bigger board that’d fit two boards worth

How do you hook up your pedal chain with your pedals so close together? You've got some pedals with side mounted input/output, how do you plug those in with them so close to the ones next to them?

I have the classic with the hard case and I love it. Looking for a smaller one for an acoustic setup and possibly one for a laptop.

I've bought the Metro 24. It's got a soft case and it wide enough for tons of pedals. I use a Cry Baby Jr Wah and it fits easily. Power supply should have 8 plugs. I bought a TrueTone CS6 and I need more plugs. The board is wide enough to support the wider pedals like The EVH series pedals (chorus, flanger overdrive)

Hi! I'm in the market looking for a small board. Can soft cases eventually damage the knobs on pedals? Like does the inside of the bag put pressure on knobs and the pedals themselves? Vs. Hard cases is there space between the pedals and the inside of the case? I have a SansAmp Bass Driver DI Tech 21 pedal that I'm worried about. Thanks any advice would be helpful!

I'm moving from PT to Rockboard. I prefer the way Rockboard designed the size and amount of holes on the surface. There's just more options to place a pedal such that the cables can go directly down. Also, they have the MOD system and all boards have pre routed inserts to put modules into.

I own a rockboard. The idea behind it is great, love the mod series etc. BUT! Mounting a Powersupply on the back is a pain in the a**. At least if you use the Mod version with the xlr I/O. The xlr connectors are way to big. Also, you can’t put a regular xlr cable through those holes. So the Board is basically useless, at least for me as a bass player using a lot of pre amps such as a Sansamp…

hooplooplove!!! use two smaller boards, one with the essentials, the other for equipment with higher turnover. Connect both boards through a send/return loop (or more loops, ymmv). Well.... that's what I would do maybe.... because if I'd just want to grab and go fast I would take only the essentials. And of course one of the esseentials would be that orange box thing you got right there :D
