In my latest video breakdown, I wanted to see how the Patriots held the Rams to 3 points in the Super Bowl. We’ll cover:
1. Bill Belichick’s game plan
2. Front seven’s performance and how they took away the Rams’ zone running game
3. Coverage trends that Belichick used to counter Sean McVay’s scheme
4. Jared Goff's performance - Was it as bad as people thought it was?
Hope you enjoy the show!

@@brazillo19 well in all fairness, they've gotten all their rings outside of New England haha. One interesting tidbit about SB53, the Pats essentially had home field advantage. Apparently the crowd was mostly Patriot fans, as much of the merchandise sold was pro-Pats gear. Not to mention the Ram's fans (the few 'fans' they have in LA) would have had to travel thousands of miles to attend the Super Bowl, whereas the Pats didn't need to travel very far at all. Plus, as much as people "hate" Brady, Bill, Kraft, and the Pats Dynasty, there is no denying that their unparalleled success and constant contention has transformed them from one of the NFLs ridiculed basement dwellers to become the new "America's Team". Wow okay I wrote way too much, my bad haha TLDR: The Pats basically had home field advantage bc proximity to their home town and also they are the greatest and most popular team.

I think one thing Gold left out is how the Patriots used the play clock 15 second mark to their advantage. He was close to seeing it but missed it. Belichick to advantage of Goff's inexperience by changing the defensive play when the play clock hit 15 seconds. When the play clock hits 15 seconds the radios in the helmet turn off. Belichick would show one defense and then switch and hide what he was really doing. Goff was just confused for most of the game. I also think you are a little harsh on the offensive side. It has been caught on tape on the Patriots side the OC slamming down his notepad pad and basically saying none of this is working we need to do something new. The OC would not say that b/c of bad effort on the offense. While I like the breakdown on the passing plays and the run Gold misses the nuance. Belichick is the greatest coach b/c he is a chameleon. He adapts to what he sees. Brady is the GOAT. Brady did what he had to do to win. I commend both teams for the defensive game plans installed. Both confused and frustrated both quarterbacks. Brady figured out more about what was going on than the Rams. Brady has 6 freaking rings. That is not to be remotely possible in the NFL and their idea of parity. I am not a Patriots fan on this. I grew up in Texas and I am a lifelong Cowboys fan, though it is hard being a Cowboys fan with JJ in charge. I grew up watching the Cowboys on Thanksgiving starting when I was 6. No. I recognize greatness and not afraid to admire, respect and honor what these guys have done.

Great breakdown of the game. I strongly disagree that it wasn't a great game though. I've been waiting for a long time for a great defensive showdown in the Super Bowl when most games have been whoever has the ball last wins. When you see the discipline of the defenders when they switch assignments, that tells you not only about the coaching, but the amount of trust the players have in each other. This has to be one of the most satisfying wins in their careers for all the coaches.

He knew the rams playbook and it stunted the offense. the o-line got beat like a drum on runs and passes from the get go....and Goff missed throws. The Rams showed throughout the season being a very disciplined team, with good play and an excellent OL. The Patriots worked on that, with a dominant DL, 5 man rushes and Twists and Stunts. Goff is a good QB, but so far unable to improvise, practically does not play outside the pocket and when under pressure does not yield. In other words the Rams arrived in the SB by having a pressure with Aaron Donald and by having an excellent OL, that maintained the Goff with Pocket free.

@As-yi9r
@As-yi9r 5 жыл бұрын
radjedi2010 what if I told you that he had a better season this year then he did in 2013-14 seasons? There are a lot of reasons for the pats offensive “struggles” this season and I’d argue none of which is due to Brady being in decline. I’m even hesitant to say they struggled when they were the 5th best offense in the league this season. The patriots offense went through a lot of turnover, injuries, and suspensions before and throughout the season. Losing Amendola, lewis, cooks, and solder in the off-season were big hits to the offense. Then to start the season edelmen was suspended, Sony was banged up and didn’t go through training camp, Jeremy hill and Rex burkhead ended up on IR. The starting left tackle drafted was placed on IR so they had to trade for Trent brown. Gronk was battling though injuries, missed games, and when returned still struggle for a bit. Josh Gordon was here and then he wasn’t. And then people seem to forget that Brady was playing through an Mcl sprain after the titans game. So that offense went though a lot before the season even started. Which is why I think it’s unreasonable for people to expect Brady to have the same production he did last year. Once they lost Gordon the Patriots understood that they needed to be a run first type of offense. NE were in the red zone a lot this season, but why pass it when you have Sony Michel in the backfield? It’s the smarter and safer option. This is why they win. Not about individual stats. If you watch the film Brady is still capable of making every throw he has in the past.

Also, he mentions that particular play is one the Rams often use, so I wouldn't be surprised if he heard it on a mic'd up or some other NFL production. This game was really awesome because we saw FULL BACKS!!!! We also saw a lot of other plays that haven't seen in a long time defensively, DESPITE the various rule changes that have favored offensive games. Think about that for a second... In an era of crazy offensive action, the very nature of the game shows up here: defense STILL wins championships -even against an excellent offensive team. Pats coaching goes way beyond Belichick and Brady. The play books are deep... and they somehow manage to change their look and whole vibe from game to game. That's something that other teams can't counter fully, even if the offense doesn't perform as well as they should. Keeping the Rams to a field goal?!?!?!? That's masterful.

Great video as always Sam. A few things I'd like to add. Belichick after the game credited the defensive gameplan to Matt Patricia. When the Lions played the Rams earlier this season, Patricia put together a gameplan that held the Rams offense for most of the game. It was after this game that Chicago and Philly took notice and imitated what Patricia did to defeat the Rams. Since Bill has the connection, it is not so far fetched that he took Patricia's blueprint and refined it. With Goff and McVay, both of them are still young. Both of them were befuddled by this ever changing defense Belichick threw at them. Everyone points out the wide opened receivers Goff missed, and I credit that to the defense. With the disguised coverages confusing him, the defenders able to hit him often, not to mention the fact their offense is clearly not working. Goff was not used to this, Goff was panicking. There wasn't much McVay could do, the guy had never coached in a Super Bowl before. I attribute this to immaturity (with a little neglect) vs experience of 9+ Super Bowls. It was a very similar story for Brady and the PATS getting stifled as well. But unlike Goff, Brady was able to sneak a trip to the endzone.

@@kevlescia1824 The Rams had a call go their way. I'll give you that. However, it wasn't handed to them. The Saints still had plenty of other opportunities to win the game, including in overtime. Even without the call, the game could have went anyway with how close it was. It's not that simple like you say. Teams who are not as good throughout the majority of the season end up making the SuperBowl all the time, for reasons such as, upsets, going on a hot streak, injuries, bad calls, etc. So, do all these teams not deserve to go, as well? How about the Giants in 07, did they deserve to be in the Superbowl? They barely made the playoffs that year and went on a little run. Also, they ended up getting lucky, due to their playoff schedule( they had great matchups against those teams). How about a team that gets lucky because the other team is injured? Do they deserve to go? How about the Patriots getting lucky against the Chiefs because D-Ford lined up outside? Did they deserve to go? How about the Vikings against the Saints on the final play? Did they deserve to go to the NFC championship game? You can sit here and make any excuse you want for why a team doesn't deserve to advance to a certain game. It's childish and unsportsmanlike. When a game is as close as the Rams and Saints it tells me that both of them would have been deserving if they won. A game that close can be played 99 times and one team could win 45 and the other 44. That is how close in talent these two teams were. Also, you can't sit there and say Saints and Pats would have been a better game, because guess what, you don't have a fucking clue. Maybe you like the matchup more, but this doesn't mean the game would have been better. That game could have been 10-0, 52-7- or 24-27. The point is that you have no fucking idea. On the INT by Gilmour, You comment that Cooks should have use his strength to take that pass in and I agree. However, one of the knocks on Cooks with the Pats last year was he didn't make adjustments on passes typically over running and not coming back to the ball, also he didn't fight for the ball when the opportunity was there, therefore letting defensive players intercept or knock passes down. So unless the pass is close to perfect and there's minimum contact Cooks doesn't make plays like that... Edelman and Gronk typically do...

I don't think they had a bad game, they were punching above their weight and were not ready for this. MR SYG not really he made the rams playoff contenders in his first year and took them to the Super Bowl his second. That’s not overrated. The most overrated coach is either Bill O’Brien or Mike Tomlin

MR SYG I actually think Sean Payton is a much more overrated coach.

@@brianwalkey1124 At least Payton has a championship and years upon years of success. Now compare that to McVay. (Not a fan of either team btw)

MR SYG I’m not a fan either but the saints have had a lot of years of mediocrity in between the championship to the present. I’m not trying to argue it’s just my opinion. I just think he isn’t as good as people make him out to be

No he's not. He just went up against the greatest coach and QB combo of all time. He's only 33 years old. Way too early to lable him.
