In my latest video breakdown, I wanted to look at the Patriots' final overtime drive to beat the Chiefs in the AFC Championship. In this drive, the Patriots used "short motions" from the outside to create stacked looks that helped open holes in the defense. I looked at each of these 13 plays in detail and explained why each worked/didn't work.
TL/DW: Don't give Edelman wide open space in the center of your defense. Also, stop throwing it to Cordarrelle Patterson.

The league's base defense is now a nickel... with Develin and Gronk (best blocking TE) the Patriots are making teams pay for not adjusting to a true base 3-4 or a 4-3 (and even if they do... there is a lack of cohesion)

Only one proven way to beat Brady and the Pats. Physical Man-to-Man coverage and heavy interior pass rush: see Giants, Broncos, Ravens. New rules that favor offensive football make it harder to play defense this way. Pats are tough to beat when they have a great OL...like they appear to have right now. What should be appreciated, but it isn't by many, is that Brady is doing this with a sub-par Gronk. Patterson, Dorsett & Hogan are pedestrian NFL WR. Edelman is the only stud.

True because NE doesn't have true elite talent outside the numbers...it would be hard to play this coverage if NE got a julio Jones, AJ green type player because they would kill the man to man coverage and force the defense to play 2 safeties deep.

The Patriots have taken a philosophy like that of the old Tom Landry Cowboy teams of the late 60's - early 80's. They just do it a bit differently. If you get to the big games enough you are bound to win a few. Even if you are not as talented as years past. They took advantage of that offsides penalty because they were down 28-24. Not 28-14. It was 24 points because of their 1st half play. They earned it in part because they were simply there and were still very much in the game. Hats off to the Pats.

I'm not too sure if heavy interior pass rush can work anymore. Brady's deadliest ability is how quick he gets rid of the ball. When the Giants beat them Brady's greatest threat was a wideout (Moss), as opposed to his interior weapons these days (Edelman and Gronk). Yes, I know Brady had Welker back in the day, but Welker is a choke artist and there's a reason he's 0-3 in Super Bowls.

It could be that the Chiefs were playing as though they were defending against themselves with all the 2 deep safeties on 3rd and 10. If the Chiefs needed to convert/score near the end of a game would just send Hill, Watkins, and Kelce up the field (they even did this in the game) so some deep safeties would be needed to defend. They seem to have forgotten that the Pats were really in no rush to score despite there not being much time left and that they wouldn't risk deep shots when there are much more reliable routes underneath. TLDR The Chiefs coverages were badly chosen as they assumed NE would attack them the same way their own offense would.

you could tell the defense didn’t know how to play them. If you play zone, then Brady carves you up like he did to LA.. you play man coverage then they exploit you by figuring out your in man and going to the best matchup

So I guess that's the million dollar question. How do you stop them? The answer seems to have always been, "get pressure on Brady" but he gets rid of the ball so fast it's easier said than done. You can't play zone, you can't play man, you can't rely on edge rushers to get home, and if you sell out the pass game too much - they just run the ball down your throats. Short of just being physically better at every position, I guess you just have to do it all - disguise as much as possible (of course Brady's seen it all, so again easier said than done), and be as unpredictable as possible.

This is good but you should have made one about the Pats use of rarely seen old school (1990s not 1960s) formations in this game, the did: the classic “split backs” pro set with Brady under center (this made tony Romo geek out on TV), flex motion out of the I to leave Develin as the lone setback, and flex motion out of the offset-I leaving Develin in a singleback offset position,

Split backs is just the Red Formation. Red Right A Right. Green is the I- Formation. Green Right Strong B Right. That's out of the West Coast. It is unusual to motion the RB though in that formation out of an offset I.

bbigjohnson069 yes I know the West coast terminology. Usually when you see a Red (even split), Blue (offset strong) or Brown (offset weak) pulled out of the bag it’s by a WCO Head coach. But Belichick is not a WCO guy, and he never favored Red/Blue/Brown even when it was popular. Belichick did always love flex motion, but never out of the I or offset-I. That’s why I want a video on this because I’d like to know what Belichick/Brady/McDaniels saw in the Chiefs that caused them to install those plays

5:46 please don't call zone against the Patriots, who are the best team in the NFL againsts zones since 2000. I don't get why 2 safeties play 20 yards deep on 3rd and 10 when Brady never throws that far and it effectively eliminates 2 defenders from the play. Put an extra DB over the middle or Blitz an extra lineman and you're far better off

Seriously. I'm a pats fan, but this video actually has me worried. Play the receivers man to man physically. Pressure brady. And bring the safeties down or blitz the corner and have a safety in man to man. Seems like the chiefs didnt do any of those things. Whereas the rams can get pressure without rushing extras (donald and su) so as long as they fill in the middle it might be a rough day.

Our offensive line is legit I'm more worried about if our receivers or run game can get going the Ram's have great corners and have been good against the run this postseason.

The o-line is playing even better not to mention the Pats run game is more diverse than either the Cowboys or the Saints. McDaniels is a master at using legal picks, screens, putting players in motion pre snap.

@@marklewandowski8474 Exactly what I was thinking. Play man on the outside - pats receivers can't win consistently enough on the outside. Rush 4. Crowd the middle with safety and linebacker and take away the underneath route. Since safety isn't deep, helps with run defense. The only way to score against this D is when you have receivers who can break away and QB who can throw deep well. Pats have neither.

"when Brady never throws that far" Did you look at this video? they did try a couple of times. thats why they had to convert 3 times on 3rd down. they didnt make any of the long throws. Because the safties were far back. You dont give up long plays in OT. no safer way to loose. The reason you think "Brady never throws that far" is because the D doesnt allow it. if you move the safties up brady will instantly kill the play. Do his "alarm" thing. and boom they go long. they dont go long because long is closed. if you open long they will.

People complaining about refs for this game make me laugh, not only was Gronk held and interfered with most of game with no call but so were receivers on plenty of occasions such as Dorsett's TD before half, lucky for him and Pat's he still caught it but no flag so he had to catch it while being manhandled otherwise that TD is basically stolen from him, then there's the crap PI calls against Pat's Jackson to give them some big gains they should not have gotten which led to a TD for Chiefs, also that pick play they committed that got them TD that made Belichick snap and smash his Tablet, this game should have ended 28-17 Patriots if not for refs and people think they helped Pats, they sucked in general and messed up for both teams but personally I believe they actually helped Chiefs a little bit more but wasn't enough to take game away from Brady and Pats

Great video, as ever, Sam! This was an offensive game, no doubt. Mahomes will definitely be something if he builds from this season onward. But you have shown the KC defense has kinks to work out. This current era of NFL football does seem to favor the offensive, but this IMO should be an example of why defense cannot be taken for granted.

Since the late '70's all the rule changes have been made to help the offense, none help the defense. A team that tries to grind it out and play defense no longer has a chance to win it all now. It used to be that offense sold tickets and defense won championships. That's not the case anymore. There are no great defensive teams winning it all anymore. If your QB doesn't pass for close to 300yds.per game and offense doesn't average 25 pts. minimum you're not going to win.

What you didn't mention re the play at about 05:00 (3rd and 10 at about the Chiefs' 45 yd line) is the excellent timing of the play. Look at Edelman and the other wide receiver on the right side. They cross path and Edelman's defender is crucially blocked for a fraction of a second so giving Edelman the edge to get in the open for the ball. Great, excellent execution with love for the detail!

We didn't need a defense that could shut down offenses entirely, we just needed an average one that could have gotten one stop in OT on one 3rd and long. @@TheArtofUTube Scheme matters much more than you think. We have talent on that defense: the best pash rush in the NFL, and Anthony Hitchens was much better in the 4-3 than the 3-4. No matter the talent level, if you are not adjusting during the game when something is not working at the rate Bob Sutton was (as indicated in this video), you are just not going to succeed. Historical example: Dick Lebeau while in pittsburg rarely had the best secondary in the league outside of polomalau, but he SCHEMED all the time out of that weakness. This is why Dick Lebeau is revered, and Bob Sutton's on the couch. We also have Steve Spagnoluo now, who employs a 4-3 scheme which will be perfect for Dee Ford and Justin Houston. He was also a disciple of Jim Johnson. I think he'll get our D to average at least.

This was a great game. Both teams were great. I love my Pats though. Amazing team. I noticed that Brady was willing to take more risky chances. Those 2 shots in the middle of the field. 1 to gronk and 1 to Edelman was a serious risky throw. They were so tight and he threw it into 2 Chief guys who were covering Edelman 1 being a safety. Brady KNEW that there was a chance they could intercept that and we'd lose the game BUT he knew that they were such a good team that IF we didn't take more chances than they were than we'd definitely lose.

As much as I hate the Patriots have been good for so long for a reason. That reason is bill B’s. genius coaching and Tom B’s discipline to strictly follow Bill’s plan. The best coaches/QBs in the NFL use receiver motion to know whether the defense is in man or zone coverage. Literally both teams in the Super Bowl were the two best teams at doing that.

Best Patriots offense is simply crossing WR routes and making defenders have to fight through or around players leaving someone open. Almost every big play they convert is WRs crossing at the line to get the initial burst on a defender.

One thing that you have to consider here is that the Chiefs defense was already on the field for 40 minutes when this drive started. Pats will run early, make your guys pass rush 70 times if this get to the wire. It's extremely hard to be consistent and physical for that long. Remember how Atlanta's defense was so fast in the first half of Super Bowl 51 and then faded when the game was on the line? The key is how Rams D will fare against Pats 21 personnel. If NE gets 4 yds per carry, McDaniels and Brady will keep pushing that button until you can stop it.

Football isn't about defense or offense it's about clock management and ball management. You need to score enough in the allotted time while preventing you appoints from being able to out score you.

I think the ball that was "behind Patterson" was Brady choosing to throw the ball away from Sorensen who was lurking just a few yards away

I couldn't believe Andy Reid didn't call time out at the end of this drive, so his winded defense could catch their breath, before a potentially season ending touchdown - maybe make some adjustments for the running game.

One thing that needs to change, and I'm a Patriot's fan btw, is the first score rule in OT. It's totally unfair. It leaves the game up to a coin toss. I realize that maybe it's about reducing risk, but the OT should be played out to it's fullest 10 minutes. Then, if it's still tied, a second OT with the golden goal rule should be played. Maybe shorten the OT to 7 minutes or something, but for sure, the first one should be played out, so if there is scoring, the other team still has a chance to show they are worth the championship....or not.
