Black sand beaches are formed by the erosion of volcanic rocks, which results in the breakdown of dark-colored minerals such as basalt and magnetite. The eroded material is then transported by rivers and waves to the coast, where it accumulates as black sand. The sand can also be formed by wave action on volcanic rocks, which grinds them into a fine black powder that is carried to the beach.
