It's disappointing to see the Wall Street Journal's video on Nusantara presenting outdated footage and misleading information. Contrary to the claim that Nusantara threatens the rainforest, it is being built in an industrial forest area, which already poses a risk to the rainforest regardless of the new capital's construction. The development of Nusantara includes significant efforts toward sustainability and environmental protection. Accurate reporting is crucial for an informed discussion on this important project. Also the claim that Nusantara is being built "in the middle of nowhere" is inaccurate. Nusantara is strategically located near Balikpapan and Samarinda, both well-connected by toll roads, with plans to link these to Nusantara. These cities will support the new capital. While it's true that local communities face displacement issues, this is a recurring problem due to government incompetence. Instead of halting the project, we should focus on finding solutions to support local communities. Discussions on forums like Skyscrapercity offer more updated and credible information compared to major media outlets like the Wall Street Journal.

Statistically, it does makes sense, but in practice this promote more inequality to the already diverse ethnic groups and their separated regions, especially the eastern side of Indonesia that still underdeveloped from all sectors. Not to mentions, the rice farming culture of the Javanese that lead to unsustainable food policies that replaced the original diets of the eastern Indonesia region that increased a demand for rice more than it should be, while local farmer break their bone in the the rice field without ever gain more income or even cheaper fertilizers. Instead of addressing the root problem, the government tend to choose short term fix by importing rice from Vietnam and others. Also, I lived in West Java which are the most populated province of Indonesia, but when we travel to Southern West Java, it's still underdeveloped since the Soeharto's regime compared to the northern Java, perhaps it's neglected due to mountainous terrains even though it had fertile soils for tea, coffee, rice, and vegetable farming.

But then covid happened and all progress must stop for a while, but the president insisted on the 2024 deadline. Resulting a very rushed progress and poor planning. Combined with investors that cancelled their investments and indonesia's own economy were in a progress to bounce back after covid, so they're running out of money as well. So now the government's move is they are planning to increase tax percentage, and tax something that wasn't taxed before. + jokowi put his son as vice president after him so things like this would likely only the beginning of a 5 year journey of economic downfall

The main reason behind moving Indonesian capital from Jakarta to Nusantara is never because of Jakarta's sinking problem. While it's true that it's one of the reason, but it's not the key reason. The key reason is because economic development since our independence has always been only concentrated on Java island. So the moving of capital city will symbolize the moving from a Java-centrist development towards an Indonesian-centrist development. As a native Kalimantan, I really appreciate this move as it'll also bring more and more development to our neglected massive island (3rd largest in the world, as big as the country of Turkey).

Because the economy in their hometown (especially in the rural areas) is not prospering. Those farmers then stopped teaching their offspring how to farm and push them to work in other fields. Nusantara was a geographical name for a place that mostly comprised of most of Indonesia's territory today. The name was used by ancient kingdoms in Java island, including the Majapahit Empire which is the largest empire in Southeast Asia's history. The name was later adopted for the new capital city of Indonesia.3 Mar 2024
@mapk15163 ай бұрын
But there's also a case that the name 'Nusantara' did not originate from Java, but rather from East Kalimantan itself. Nusantara was the original name of Kutai before the area was named Kutai, which later developed into the Kutai Kertanegara Kingdom, established in the 14th century. This view was put forward by Samarinda historian Muhammad Sarip. He explained that the name 'Nusantara' itself is influenced by Sanskrit (a language from India). However, the word 'nusantara' has become a place name (toponym) for the area in eastern Kalimantan which was later named Kutai, namely before the Kutai Kertanegara Kingdom was established in 1300 AD and lasted for centuries after (compare with the existence of Majapahit 1293-1527 AD).

As a Malaysian (living in East Malaysia, Sabah).... I hope this mega project can be successful..... ** this will force Peninsular Malaysia to quickly develop Sabah/Sarawak..... ** Sabah/Sarawak is some what behind in development; compare to Peninsular Malaysia

If you develop Sabah/Sarawak it will take a lot of deforestation and that is not good for the environment and nature. Every year the federal government gives out to state governments grants for development. Ask your ministers what did they do with the money?! The grant you got ain't small! The responsibility to develop the states rest with the state government NOT Federal government!

Cutting down forests and having spent so much money but there is still no clarity on the fate of this new capital. This shows the absence of a thorough plan. The center of government could actually be moved to PIK 2 island where the costs would definitely be cheaper and there would be no need to destroy forests in Borneo

It’s better to expand your literacy and understanding before making inaccurate comments. Not all of Kalimantan is forested; it’s a stereotype when you don’t delve into the details. The island of Borneo is divided among three countries: Indonesia, Malaysia, and Brunei Darussalam. Specifically, Indonesian Kalimantan has quite advanced and developing industrial areas, as well as rapidly growing cities. Our new capital city is situated between two major cities, Balikpapan and Samarinda. On the other hand, the forested areas are protected and will not be destroyed, as our capital city is built on industrial eucalyptus plantations, not natural forests.

@@zzeroemissions3364 What a naive thoughts. With the new capital, soon the forested area of Kalimantan and its indigenous people will be perished. The capital will grow, and with habits of mismanagement like in Jakarta, soon the corruption and devastation will engulf Kalimantan. Haven't you heard that floods are getting more and more frequent in East Kalimantan since the development of the New Capital? Probably you have heard, but chose to cherrypick the facts
