Hats off to you if you loved Dylan in elementary school. I was in high school and college during the 60’s and he was a difficult nut to crack even then for me and my chums. We loved him, but he was a mystery.

Do your maths 2023 - 66 = 1957 Amazingly I had 2 older brothers who introduced me to Dylan mid 1960’s when I was 8 years old. Does that solve your suspicion Der Raumdeuter Maths is quite simple Just in case the maths still confuses you, I’m turning 66 this year

Syed..,because of your background in rap and hip-hop and resultant respect for the use of poetry to a beat in music, your love and high regard for Dylan’s work, because you give such insightful and intelligent breakdowns of his work, and also because so few reactors can or will do that…..what would you think of picking an album of his and going through it…perhaps one track a week? Make Dylan YOUR special calling card as a reaction channel. I know I for one would be totally onboard with that…..Anyway, it’s just a thought. 😁

Great idea Helene. Although, I think I might prefer a one album side per video approach. If he were to do only two albums, I would pick one of his key albums from the 60s (very tough choices) and "Blood on the Tracks" from the 70s. Much harder to pick only one from the 60s, but I think "Blood on the Tracks" is the more obvious 70s choice. Although I like "Desire" almost as much in the 70s. Syed could of course make the choices easier by not limiting it to two albums. 😁 Of course in speaking in terms of album sides, someone will need to send him the vinyl versions, so Syed can experience albums like we did back in the day. I guess they might have to throw the turntable into the shipment as well if he were to actually listen to them. Although there is value in just holding, reading, and experiencing the album art alone.

@@LeeKennison considering the deep dive he does into the lyrics, I don’t think album sides are feasible with Dylan….although with concept albums I definitely agree with you. Dylan though…….I think needs one song at a time. Each is a poem.

The writing and music that Dylan created was awarded the Nobel Prize in the hopes that his absolute creative genius might be compared to the often irrelevant creations awarded previously. It is his brain and heart that glued our world to his every utterance. It moved us, enormously!

Dylan not only mixes chronology, but also mixes perspectives and first person narration all the time. Tangled Up in Blue is a great example of that. I saw her. I saw him. He (I) went up to the great north woods, but I (she) had to sell everything I own. Yes, great writing.

The entire "thing" Dylan does, the entire package....lyrics, melody, music, intonations, pauses and arrangements that is his "poetry". It's NOT just the words on the page. And you know, poets of old were chanters, singers, musicians. Poetry was oral, and aural. Dylan returns us to those roots.

Syed! The entire album youtube search string: Bob Dylan / Time Out Of Mind / reimagined In the comments: Love Sick 0:00 Dirt Road Blues 5:19 Standing in the Doorway 10:55 Marchin’ to the City 18:27 Tryin' to Get to Heaven 25:08 Not Dark Yet 32:12 Cold Irons Bound 37:49 Make You Feel My Love 44:04 Can't Wait 48:30 Highlands 53:17 How can so many great songs be on the same album? To anyone who has come to at least accepting Dylan's voice, this maybe his most perfect album, an album that proves that he is the greatest pop singer song writer and recording artist ever. Just try to think of someone who could produce a cover better than the original release. Perfection is everywhere; recording, lyrics, delivery, vocals, band, musicianship. I think this is my sixth listen to TOoM. I still need to listen more to get Cold Iron Bound. I have listened most to the peculiar song (2 chord?) Highlands, which I believe to be his longest song. Often I find the greatest versions by Bob are live. A good cover seems impossible. Keep up the good work.

Great video. As someone whose loved and admired Dylan's artistry for years, I really appreciate your insights - including a hip-hop perspective" that values the power of words and the rhythm of the delivery. And the subversiveness of it all. May I offer 2 recommendations? First, you'll enjoy Martin Scorsesse's documentary "No Direction Home" (which borrows heavily from D.A. Pennebaker's clips from the 1960s). And while there are so many brilliant songs to choose from, I propose "A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall" --- it's an early one that captures so much of what makes Dylan Dylan.

Dylan writes JWH after his ''crash'' in 1966...He goes from the top list of artists to going into hiding (got away from the business that nearly killed him).... I just posted this on your other video about Dylan's performance of "All Along the Watchtower". I'll post it here too. I interpret this song as dealing with a crisis that is coming to an entire society....the place that exists with all the businessmen, the princes, the powerful people who are in charge at the top....and the women, and the plowmen, and the barefoot servants, who are the underclass, the powerless. The Princes are at the very top, in the watchtower. They are all there, doing the things they usually do, caught up in their ordinary activities and habits, as an apocalyptic storm approaches from the distance. The Joker and the Thief know what's coming. They are like 2 prophets who can see the approaching storm. They'd like to get out of that place of confusion and graft before it all comes crashing down around their ears. The Thief reminds the Joker that they, at least, have seen through the false illusions that this whole city (or society) is built upon, and that they will not suffer the same (spiritual?) fate that awaits those who have not seen through it. "So, let us not talk falsely now...the hour is getting late!" Doom is about to fall upon that place...and the ominous music foreshadows it. One is reminded of the doom that fell upon Sodom and Gomorrah in the Bible. This has very much the same feel. As the storm nears, two riders are seen approaching. Are they like two Angelic messengers of destruction? Horsemen of the Apocalypse? Or are they the Joker and the Thief, seen at another point in the story? That question remains unanswered. As the storm descends upon the city/society the eerie howling of the rising wind (heard in the harmonica) announces it...a terrifying scene, as when a hurricane approaches landfall. That's just my interpretation, of course. There could be any number of other interpretations. Most of the songs on this album have a strong spiritual and moral message, delivered in a very dour and concise fashion. It's all about sin, repentance for past misdeeds, deliverance, and redemption. It's an extraordinarily strong album in which I think Dylan is to a great extent writing about (as usual)...........himself....and his own spiritual journey through suffering, trial, and error toward redemption. And he was writing about society in the largest sense as well. It's a very interesting change of direction, musically speaking, from the 3 albums that preceded it, and it surprised people at the time....just when most of the rock groups were turning to ever more complex instrumentation, Dylan was stripping it down to the bare essentials: 1 acoustic guitar, his voice, a harmonica, a drum set, and a bass. He went exactly the opposite way that the other most famous musical acts were going at the time. They went toward excess. He returned to musical simplicity...but with the usual incredible lyrics. In Dylan's case, the music always is there to serve the lyrics, and that's why I like his material the best. Rock bands are usually more about showcasing exciting instrumental riffs.

Many Dylan songs are like passing across two people telling a tale, but you can only get what you can in the seconds you could consume. Certainly top two with Joni Mitchell. Joni’s is more introspective. Depends on the day for me. They are like the electrons in the first valence shell orbiting around perfection.

Dylan has so many more song styles than Mitchell. And her jazz stuff l just can't hear. But I'm biased as l absolutely detest jazz

Please take a few minutes to watch Patti Smith accept the Nobel prize for Dylan. He couldn't be there for the ceremony. She sings A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall and it's very moving. It meant so much to her, she forgets the lyrics at one point, but recovers.

You should react to Bob Dylan's acceptance speech for the Nobel Peace Prize to the Nobel Committee in Sweden. it was delivered by the ambassador to Sweden from the United States and she did an excellent job.! obviously Bob Dylan couldn't make it, he had prior engagements✌️!
