I got to interview Angie Thomas for The Hate U Give! I loved the book and the film, and jumped at the chance to ask her more about her experience meeting readers, working on the film and her inspiration behind the book. Enjoy! #TheHateUGive

Can you review my book?
I’m always happy to hear about upcoming books, but I’m afraid I don’t review self-published books and can only accept a small number of books for review. I enjoy reading classics, dystopian/apocalyptic novels, sci-fi, translated fiction and a variety of graphic novels, YA and contemporary literary fiction. Get in touch at booksandquills@gmail.com
Where is your accent from?
I was born and raised in the Netherlands, studied English Lit at Leiden University (also in the Netherlands), studied in the US for 3 months and have lots of American friends. I'm definitely not Irish or Canadian, I promise!
Where do you live?
I live in London and have been here for 4 years now.
How did you get into publishing?
I did publishing work experience, did a lot of networking and learned everything I know about social media from creating and running this channel. (P.s. You don't necessarily have to study Publishing or English to get a job in publishing!).

I LOVE how Angie said that just because something is specific doesn’t mean it can’t be universal. It sums up so much of why we love to read! And also, especially as an American, that sums up part of why this story is so important. And I feel like it being written for the young black community makes an even stronger impact. White people, like myself, get to see this specific story and understand that even if that isn’t our personal reality, it is the reality of our nation and for the people of color that we love. Great interview

The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas is a compelling novel that explores deep into the themes of racism and Starr Carter (the main character) facing prejudice and discrimination from the white society. The book explores deeper into the subject of racism through stereotypes against black people, your identity and your blackness. This story is truly shocking but a remarkable book as we really get to experience the brutality and reality for young sixteen year olds. This is because Angie Thomas allows us to put ourselves in the shoes of someone facing all these issues or in a similar situation. The Hate U Give is set in America, the poor black neighbourhood of Gareden Heights where Starr Carter lives. Yet coming from this neighbourhood she attends a predominantly white white school called Williamson prep, already seen as unequal. It was when her best childhood friend Khalil was shot and killed by an American white police officer, is when Starr’s voice developed and she started speaking her rights. This book really opened my eyes to these racial issues in America. I believe Angie Thomas was very brave to tackle the very controversial and sensitive topic of race, and I think she did an amazing job with this novel. She portrayed a brutal reality that people now know, need to be solved for more sixteen year old girls like Starr.

Insane because I actually was 13 when I witnessed my first riot: I remember because it was 2015 and it for Freddie Gray and I was sitting at home with my brothers watching everything go down because I was in my room with my brothers because our rooms were upstairs so I remember my parents staying up all night with every knife in the house waiting for someone to break in

The hate u give is my favourite ever movie and book, it is so inspirational and powerful to so many people out there where actual real life problems are represented and talked about further. Being white I feel iffy to express my love for topics like this because I’ve never been put into these horrible situations. However to anyone who has , you are incredible and strong beyond belief .

I think she was having some of the same issues Rick Riordan did when he first released Percy Jackson. Your debut book is a hit and now some company wants to make a movie of it! But you’re not an “experienced enough” author to make a big decision on the actors and the way the movie goes
