I spent two weeks in Kirkwall in 2022. Lovely place and the best people in the World. I suppose its part of living on an island in the North sea, if you don't look after each other then you'd all be skrewed. But that kindness and willingness to help is also extended to visitors. Genuinely lovely people.

Hi Steve. My husband (also a Steve) and I are Americans who love watching your videos. I did want to comment on something you said in this one about port towns loving the positive effect on their economy when cruise ships come into town... As very frequent cruisers for a very long time (35 years now) and all over the world, I can tell you that there is actually a substantial (and growing) anti-cruise movement happening not only in well-publicized places like Venice and Svalbard (both of those for environmental reasons), but also in places like Barcelona, Palma de Mallorca, the Canary Islands, Valencia, Amsterdam, Dubrovnik, Bruges, Iceland and throughout Norway (for both environmental and quality of life reasons), as well as Key West, Bar Harbor, and throughout Alaska in the US. There are so many large ships nowadays, that when there are multiple ones are simultaneously docked in a port, the cruise passengers completely overwhelm the port cities without adding add as much to the local economy as one would think. That's because, as solely day-trippers, there are no hotel stays, often no restaurant meals consumed other than quick bites or coffee in a café, no theater or sports tickets purchased, etc. It's sad, but as someone who lives myself in a tourist area (Southeast Florida not far from Fort Lauderdale), I do fully understand it.

I'll add my congrats on reaching 200K+ subscribers to the list. Love your casual strolls around such quaint places like Kirkwall. My spouse and I were on the Regal Princess for the British Isles cruise in 2023. Invergordon was the northern-most port in that season but Kirkwall seems to be a great port as well and would love to visit. I, too, consider the impact on such a massive influx of tourists on small towns on our travels. Booking an excursion/tour in the area hopefully contributes to the local economy in a modest way. Keep on traveling. 😀

When leaving tavern,s men were 'pressed' into service courtesy of the Bosun's Cudgel, the next morning they would wake onboard a ship supposedly having 'volunteered' with a large lump on their head. So lovely to see this video Steve. I was lucky enough to pass through Kirkwall on 4 Sept on my way to Tingwall to catch the ferry to Rousay where I stayed for nearly 3 weeks to visit a friend. I loved mooching around the town & visited the amazing cathedral. Brief visits back to the mainland from Rousay before travelling back to England on 23 Sept included Stromness, Birsay and Skaill - also nipped over to Egilsay. I'd love to go back and spend more time on the mainland & visit the other islands. If you've ever been (or plan to get to Rousay), check out the amazing 'Betty's Reading Room' just around the corner from the car park at Tingwall Ferry - it's a little single storey farm building converted in memory of Betty, who I think was a schoolteacher - always open and full of books to read, borrow, swap, take - such a wonderful idea and a space to hide away whilst waiting for your ferry. A local told me about it and even my friend didn't know it was there - thank you Ted ❤

Great video Steve, on the impact of tourism, it's really a balancing act, as tourism can bring in money to the communities, but too much tourism and the local people can get fed up with it. Over the last few years in Europe there have been a number of protests by locals in cities in Spain, Italy, Norway and others about the impact of tourism, with the bigger cities being swamped by them. Think the issue here is cash is king, the governments want / need the money coming in so local sentiment takes second place, which makes it worst for them, be interesting to see how it all plans out And on that, I'd totally recommend a cruise in the Med, great way to see a few different cities / countries in a week

When we visited the Orkneys in our campervan back in June my friend who lives on Sanday thoughtfully sent me the numbers of cruise ship passengers visiting on each day so that we could arrange our sightseeing on (or off) Mainland accordingly. It worked brilliantly to avoid the crowds (7500 off 4 ships on one day!) although some of the amazing tombs were fully booked for days ahead for the ships. Like you we found the scenery and history stunning and Sanday is a completely magical island. Another great video, I dearly wish to be back in Orkney.
