In our latest Football Daily Explained we are once again turning our attention to Barcelona to question how on earth they are able to afford so many players! Raphinha and Robert Lewandowski have joined for over €100m, and more are expected to follow.
We look at the work done by President Joan Laporta and the Director of Football Mateu Alemany to slash the wage bill and move on old players, plus look at the big deals behind the scenes that all filling the clubs coughers once more. From their sponsorship with Spotify, to selling their La Liga TV rights, Barca are finding ways to fund their activity.
And, with the help of the online economist Swiss Ramble, we see why the darkest days of the club's accounts might be behind them, for now.

The truth is in an Ideal world, Barça would never opt for these options. The only way out of the mess that Bartomeu left us in are these decisions. I will back Laporta and Alemany. They are the only ones competent enough to not sit around watching as the club keeps falling and actually take the tough decisions that no one else will. Anyways, I will keep supporting Barça no matter what happens. Win, lose or tie Barça till I die.

Simply put Barca are selling part of their future earnings in form of TV rights and the merchandise to help us compete with the clubs in the premier league that have been sold to multi billionaires ( complete clubs not fractions of the clubs I may add )

Selling 25% of their TV deal is incredibly risky. Granted unless other teams make a push into the top 4, Barca are almost guaranteed UCL qualification, losing almost €40m annually for 25 years maybe have far reaching effects not yet envisioned.

Sure but barca pre covid were earning almost a billion annually but then paying huge amounts out so once our new wage structure is implemented the amount of money available is actually not going to drastically change too much. Consider that 40 mill would be going out to lenglet at 14 umtiti at 12 and neto at 9 so those three players alone who won't play 1 game would be the majority of that annually for the next however many years if they weren't being forced out

Without knowing the exact numbers this could be smart business. In the short term this keeps them competitive which they rely on to service their debt, in the medium term it’ll hurt them obviously, but long term they might be saving their club from ruin. Not much else the current board could have done given how the previous board ruined the club. The way they managed to change the wage structure at the club is also impressive. While the deal is obviously not official, Kounde agreed on 6M Euro net, which is half of what Chelsea offered him. They’re moving in the right direction, however you might feel about that
@bruh.8336

it‘s smart business if they win trophies and get a big amount of prize money. If that‘s not the case they have to rely on TV money and merchandising (like every club except of oil clubs) which in the long term is a big problem bc they sold 25% of the tv deal. If they would get 200 million for the broadcasting every year they would lose 1250000000 over the course of the whole deal. They‘re basically gambling rn and need to have instant success for numerous seasons to benefit from that deal
@davidsimon7436
@davidsimon7436 2 жыл бұрын
@@bruh.8336 gambling is a very negative word. Every club buys players and hopes they’ll bring them success. It’s really more of a risky investment. I agree that this will hurt them whether they’re successful or not in the medium term because they’ve sold a minority stake in their TV rights for the next 25 years, however, it probably was necessary to save the club. They’ve massively improved their wage structure (and are not even willing to break this structure for players like Lewandowski) which will also help them to keep their expenditure down in the seasons to come. What Barca are doing right now actually seems sensible in that it’s the best way forward. Gambling for resurrection is what they were doing with the Griezman deal

@@davidsimon7436 yeah i also think that this was necessary, which only shows how bad this club was run. But I‘m curious if they‘ll use the money to pay clubs like Bordeaux (I think they would be happy about 10 mil in their current state) or maybe pay the 16 million they owe frenkie (the reason theyre trying to force him out of the club) or instead just splash another 100 million for new players

@@bruh.8336 well just so you know that 25% tv rights equals only 4% of Barca’s yearly revenue. So gambling is not the word to use here. Also just a reminder that real madrid sold 100% of their TV rights in 2006 for 1.2 billion euros and Barca sold 1/4 of that for 600 million. And Real madrid won their first UCL in 2013 wich is seven years after selling their tv rights but somehow that wasnt gambling. In concllusion Barcelona and Real Madrid are monay making machines and those TV rights are nothing compared to their other sources of income. I dont know why when it comes to Barca everybody says its bad business what they did with their TV rights when its clearly a better deal than that of their rivals. Teams like Barca, Real and ManU realistically need to be competitive for 2 to 3 years to be stable financially, they dont even need to win major trophies they just need to be competitive on all fronts

It seems like they are already overextending again. Bringing in players on free transfers are obviously shrewed, but then they go and spend €50 m. on Jules Koundé, when they had already brought in Christensen for the CB position and already had Araujo, Garcia and Pique. Basically yes. For a club like Barcelona with the revenue they bring in which is higher every other club itw, those debts will be balanced in 4-5 years, the rights we sold we be regained at a loss but that loss can be recuperated in about 2 years and depending on the sporting success the club has, the time frame would be much lower. the UCL, La Liga, and other domestic trophies alone bring in north of over 250m a season excluding ticket sale. Our ticket sales would drop for short wile until 2024-25 when the Espai Barca project will be completed. Espai Barca pays for itself over time as well but it would also bring a lot more revenue. My predictions are that by 2025 the clubs will generate revenue north of 1.2b every year.

If they don’t play their cards right things will only get worse. @@durrutino I don't care whom they sign. It is how they are going about their business as explained. The levers work, because there are so many people in influence that holds interest in keeping Barcelona afloat, including the players taking a paycut. However, it is pretty risky business, and quite honestly I thought they would have been better off by focusing on La Masia while they were rebuilding not only the squad, but also their finances and tainted image. Now they are using the "levers" for more spending, which got them in the bad spot in the first place, along with Covid. Circus club, and no team building, just player juggling to impress the public perception, hoping they will not crash and burn. Barcelona is a highly unethical club and has been for years. How can the be allowed to sign players when players and clubs don't have got their money ? I think of the clubs that where so in to superLeague or what the name was. Give the teams 2 years ban from all European completion. No option to buy players and see if somebody else try to make more money in this way again. No hard punishment for me. It's just that it must be fair to all clubs, other teams are getting banned or warned of financial fair play if the sign someone and don't sell. Still don't know how this is possible. I just hope that the players the want to get rid of stays in Barca so the can't register the new players. Would be fair and give hope to the rest of the football world. Just take the so called super leauge. Why ain't anybody getting any punishment ? O that's right this is a new game who is called monopoly football. While there's been almost no change in recruitment strategy and they are still paying over market value for who are either limited or will have little to no market value at the end of their contracts. We are ralking about a man that payed journalists and hired internet troll accounts to slander players and political opponets with the club's OWN MONEY. If Laporta's salary cap driven strategy that focuses on signings requested directly by the coaching staff, priorizing free agents above all looks the same as Bartomeu's strategy you are insane.

Since Laporta has been in this current term, Memphis, to a degree Aubameyang, Christensen and Kessie were all signed on as free transfers. That's something that would have been unheard of during Bartomeu's tenure. Don't be so blinded by the transfer figures of Lewandowski, Raphinha and Ferran Torres to not see the difference. Also forgot to mention that every signing made under Laporta has been on much lower wages than what Bartomeu was giving to players. Barcelona being in a much more competitive position now is only going to help them financially as a lot of money will be recouped from competition prize money thanks to having a board that takes into account the coach's input as opposed to Bartomeu blindly signing players without any sort of consent from the coaching staff.
