You wish to become a Dutch citizen. There are different ways for this: automatically by birth or acknowledgement, or by means of naturalisation or option.
This animation explains how you can become a Dutch national through naturalisation.

I have a question. During the process (the decision period of 12 months), will my passport be retained at the municipality/IND? If yes, when I would get it back? Or just a copy (or similar) is taken and the passport is returned straight after the application? Thank you!

Hi, do you refer to the procedure for applying for Dutch nationality through naturalisation? If your passport has been approved, you will receive it back after submitting the application. I would like to request you to discuss this with the municipality just to be sure. Have a nice weekend! ^MR

If someone has nationalties listed as: ‘Netherlands’ & ‘Unknown’ on the Dutch Civil registry, does the 13 year countdown clock apply to them when they reside outside the EU?
@immigratie-ennaturalisatie4067

Hi, in the situation that you have a different nationality in addition to the Dutch nationality, you will lose your Dutch nationality automatically if you have lived outside the Kingdom of the Netherlands and the countries of the European Union (EU) for 13 consecutive years. There are 3 exceptions to this, in which you will not lose your Dutch nationality: You live abroad because you work, or your spouse or partner works for the government of the Netherlands, Aruba, Curaçao or Sint Maarten. Before the 13 years have passed, you are going to live in the Kingdom of the Netherlands or the European Union for more than 1 year. Then the 13 year-count will stop. The counting will start again when you start living outside the Kingdom and the EU once more. You get a new Dutch passport or identity card before the 13 years have passed. Or you get a Declaration of Possession of Dutch Citizenship. The counting of the 13 years will start again as soon as you have received one of these documents. I'm not sure what you mean by '& unknown´. Nationality is 'Unknown´ in situations where there was no proof of a certain nationality. The combination of a Dutch nationality and 'unknown' seems not logic. Please contact the Municipality to check this combination. ^EB

Hello, I have a question I couldn't find on your website: As an EU citizen who becomes a Dutch citizen by naturalization, how long do they have to renounce their other EU citizenship? A year 2 years or more? And if they can't renounce their other EU citizenship in time do they lose their Dutch citizenship?
@immigratie-ennaturalisatie4067
@immigratie-ennaturalisatie4067 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, there is no strict rule on how long a person has to renounce their other nationality. We expect that you do this as soon as possible to end your nationality. However this also depends on the country of your other nationality. You can inform about this at the consulate or embassy of the country of your nationality in the Netherland. Please find more information about renouncing your nationality here bit.ly/2SPhRyO. Do you have to renounce your other nationality, but you do not do this? Then the IND can revoke your Dutch nationality. Read more about loss or revoking of Dutch nationality bit.ly/2oLKA3K ^Emily

Hello, you can only apply for naturalisation if you have had Dutch nationality before and want to regain it, or if you are married to, or the registered partner of, someone with Dutch nationality. You must also meet the conditions for a Dutch residence permit, for example for staying with a partner, or re-entry for former Dutch citizens who wish to return to the Netherlands. You do not have to apply for the residence permit before you apply for naturalisation. Sometimes you do not have to pass the civic integration examination as a requirement for naturalisation. You have exemption or dispensation from the integration requirement. You can also get a partial exemption. Then you do not have to do all the parts of the civic integration examination. In the brochure Civic integration examination: requirement for naturalisation (only available in Dutch) you can read when you can get a (partial) exemption: bit.ly/3MuycPH. For more information see also: bit.ly/3x5XizM. ^HG

You can lose the Dutch nationality in different ways. Loss is sometimes automatically, but your Dutch nationality may also be revoked. Sometimes there is an exception and you can still keep your Dutch nationality. Or you can prevent the loss of your Dutch nationality. Hi, to apply for a Dutch citizenship, you have lived in the Kingdom of the Netherlands for at least 5 consecutive years with a valid residence permit. In general, it starts from the day that is mentioned on your - first- residence permit. The civic integration exam is part of the process and a condition for naturalisation. When you apply, your residence permit is a temporary residence permit with a non-temporary purpose of stay. All the requirements can be found here: bit.ly/3NylMY6. If you have more questions after reading this information, do not hesitate to ask. ^EB

Hello, good question! There are several differences between the option and the naturalization procedure. I will mention the most important differences. The option procedure costs EUR 206 and the naturalization procedure costs EUR 970. For the option procedure you don’t have to pass the civic integration exam. For the naturalization procedure you have to pass the civic integration exam. The legal term for the option procedure is 3 months and for the naturalization procedure it is 12 months. For the option procedure and the naturazation procedure there are also different conditions. For the different conditions you can visit the following websites bit.ly/3NylMY6 and bit.ly/3XdUsTJ.
