2011 must’ve been a trip. Every other year, they hardly play each other.

It wasn’t. It was a nightmare, both for the Canucks and the real fans. Watching people wreck the city and act like fools and criminals. And I lived through 1994. Technically I was alive in 1982, but I don’t remember it. 1994 is my best memory as a Canucks fan. They weren’t expected to go anywhere but did. In 2011, they were expected to win, but had a meltdown. A series of them. I thought it would be a good series, but it was the worst experience I’ve seen in a 7 game series. I actually believed after game 6 in 94 the Canucks could win. In 2011, after they were up 3-2 I thought there might be a chance, but I knew Boston was in their heads and when they lost, it got ugly.

It was such a great run until the fourth round. It was really hard to watch that series live, Vancouver went from being the unstoppable force to consistently being the second-best team on the ice. And leaving the stadium after game seven was surreal. I had a lot of bitterness for the Bruins for a long time afterward, but time has now passed and the hate has faded. I might even be able to watch another Finals between the two without a serious mental breakdown. 😅

I was introduced to the NHL in 1969-1970 and watched Hockey Night in Canada every Saturday night (which was the only place a Canadian could see it ) I became a fan of Boston mostly because of Bobby Orr. A short while later I became a fan of Montreal because of the play of rookie goaltender Ken Dryden. Then in 1979-80 my home city got a team in the Oilers. I am a fan of all 3 teams!

I want to commend you for your stance on multiple teams. Every since i was 8 I've rooted for 3 teams. My hometown Flyers, the Kings (because Cechmanek got traded there), and the Red Wings (literally because they had a disgusting video game-esque stacked team) and I've been made fun of it all my life. People told me "you're a Flyers fan, how can you root for the Wings after '97?" and my response was always "If I hated every team that beat the Flyers I'd hate every team including the Flyers because there are nights where they definitely beat themselves." But watching you has made me feel validated. So thanks Shannon. You are the man!

My dad was a huge Boston fan and my mom a huge canuck fan. So I get it, its hard cheering for both teams and 2011 was just the most bizarre and confusing thing. On one side, yay, one of my teams is guaranteed to win, yet, another is guaranteed to lose. I was more on the Canucks side as they had never won it ever, tho I still wanted Chara and Bergeron to win a cup during their career. A wild ride that was.

I have been a B's fan since i discovered hockey looking to watch a red sox game on the old tv38. The Vancouver playoff run in 94 enthralled me with the amount of multiple overtime games and the back and forth odd man rushes. Being a Boston fan i was really rooting for them to beat the blue shirts. I also really do like the white skate jersey. I think it is a lot sharper look. Never been a fan of the blue green jerseys. Now Vancouver isn't my west team. I have liked vegas since their beginning, but i have much respect for the nucks

Hope your enjoying/enjoyed your vacation Shannon. As a lifelong Bruins fan living in the Boston area you are correct! We'd love to have you come to the TD Garden for a Bruins game and have no issue with your being a Vancouver fan. I think you hit it on the head with the comment about Montreal. My hockey fandom started when I was in grade school in the 1970's watching the epic matches between Boston and Montreal. The names of Orr, Esposito, Bucyk, Lafleur, Dryden, Cournoyer, Mahovlich seared into my memories. If you were a Canadiens fan we'd still welcome you, but maybe not as warmly if you were wearing a Canadians jersey. We still view them as our arch nemesis, but even the heat of that rivalry is cooling from what it was for my generation.

I first found your channel when you had 2000 some odd subs. I also live near Van. And since 2011, I can totally understand why Canucks fans say you can't be a Bruins fan. Being only a few years younger than you I can completely understand having to cheer for the team nearest to you geographically. I therefore was a Flames fan. I hated the oilers. After 86 I hated the Habs. I also have a team I cheer for in the East, because Philly met the Oilers with Lindberg and then Hextall (and orange was my favourite colour) I unfortunately became a lifelong Flyers fan. As I age, I become a fan of players more than of teams. But I wish a Canadian team would win a cup again soon, its like 2 Canadian teams have to meet in the finals. 93 was too long ago! I enjoy watching your content, I hope you enjoy your vacation and I wish you nothing but the best in your future!

Started cheering for the bruins when my brother (who played hockey, ive never had) wanted me to play nhl18 with him. I was really bad at it but then realized you could fight in the game so he suggested id take the team with the biggest guy, Chara. And from that point onwards they were my favourite team and Chara my favourite player. Wasnt until a few year later that i started watching all the games as i had nightshifts in the military so i could see them live (norwegian fan). Now i watch the games as a rerun(?) every morning after they played, and when they have them early games i will always have nachos for dinner while watching them live! Always wanted a Chara jersey but the NHLshop doesnt really ship to Norway so im checking ebay. Would be happy if someone know where i can get one from! I cheered for both, and I remember the 2011 game when Boston was in Vancouver in the regular season, I went to the game with her wearing my Canucks jersey with my Bruins shirt underneath it. I was cheering for Vancouver, but once the Bruins made it 2-1 in the third, I took my Canucks jersey off and showed off my Bruins shirt to the joy of the many Bruins fans around me at the time. While I'm not a Canucks fan by any measure now, in the finals I was cheering for Vancouver, and it hurt when the Bruins won. As much as I liked the Bruins back then, I was still a Canucks fan first. Thanks to highschool and the 2013 run, though, I pretty quickly became a Bruins fans first and eventually starting hating the Canucks because of the city treated me when I would go out in a Bruins jersey. I don't hate them now, but I'm definitely not a Canucks fan anymore.

Whatever city I live in if it has a hockey team That way I can enjoy things locally no matter where I end up while retaining my fandom with Vancouver which I've had since my childhood. Being from Salt Lake with no family who ever even watched hockey, I accidentally turned on a Sharks-Kings game in 2011 and fell in love with hockey through Couture, Pavs, Jumbo, and the rest of that Sharks team. Obviously, I hated them with a passion for the first few years (especially because of all the new hockey fans in Utah that were Knights fans) but after they traded for Jack Eichel (and the Sharks had just been awful for a few years), I kind of started liking Vegas. Then, after scoring tickets to a Knights-Kings game at the Fortress and having the best in game experience of my life, I decided that Vegas would be my number 2 team. Watching them win the SC and driving down to watch that parade was the cherry on top (even though I’d give anything to have that parade in San Jose).

It really feels like the less often teams play each other, the more amicable the fanbases will be (especially if they have shared misfortunes, such as not having a Cup). It's only when they play each other extremely often (Original Six teams, any divisional rival), have the games they're playing really matter (playoffs), or some external source (geographical/city rivalry, team movement (hi minnesota) or a big dirty hit (see; the Todd Bertuzzi-Steve Moore incident in 2004)). I'm a fan of two Western teams, but can get away with it because one's in the Central while the other's in the Pacific (and wasn't that conference final last season fun for me until it wasn't), and I could probably pick up two eastern teams if I wanted to. There's also the fact that I'm not in any real hardcore team fandoms where the No True Scotsman fallacy comes up a lot.

I grew up in Michigan but lived for quite awhile in Colorado. I can't say there was ever a moment where I even once considered taking on one of Denver's sports teams as my own. Even though at the time ALL of my Detroit teams were horrible, it just feels so weird. When you root for multiple teams it does give you a sort of insurance policy that the rest of us don't have. I would argue it sort of waters down when one of those teams you root for wins though because you have better odds to be happy? To each their own though.

As a young canucks fan (14 at the time of the dreaded final) after watching what happened, and how Boston also had one of the dirtiest players in the league, they were easy to put at the top of my disliked list. I’m a huge nucks fan and won’t lie a part of me despises the bruins but in your case it makes sense why you would cheer for both. I will most likely never do the same but I do respect any other fan and that’s all that matters. (Although a little friendly trash talk can always be fun).

As an Oilers fan who never experienced the 80s dynasty run they had. I remember growing up, in Northern Alberta, and Ryan Smyth being my favourite player. But I was always a huge fan of Henrik Zetterberg & Pavel Datsyuk, Lindstrom, Osgood growing up and became a huge fan of the Red Wings as well (Besides 2006, I was excited when Edmonton knocked them out in the first round). But it’s also the same story with the Capitals, I was a big fan of Ovi, Peter Bondra, Jagr, Adam Oates. And it kinda just sticks with you but I’ll always be an Oilers fan first

Nothing wrong with cheering for both teams. This reminds me of the 2022 NBA Finals, when both of my teams (Warriors and Celtics) met for the championship.

This made me think about something my dad told me a while back. He said he used to hang out in this hockey thread in a sports forum and one of the regulars was this troll who, get this, was a fan of both the Sharks and the Ducks. Now how does anyone cheer for both of them? I guess people in there dogged him until he chose a team. Poor guy chose to cheer the Sharks. My dad said the guy's screen name was a dig on the Canucks not having a cup.

I mean, you can cheer for as many or as few teams as you want. I personally only have one main team per league (Avs, Patriots, Blue Jays, Bulls, Alouettes) but there are other teams in those leagues I like and teams I don't.

I'm a Leafs fan and I can't understand cheering for more than one team. You can like other teams, but one team always wins out. Like I have a soft spot for Colorado for example, but if their suffering leads to the Leafs benefit I will always want that. So if Colorado is playing any other team, I want them to win. If they play the Leafs, I will never want them to win. So to me, I consider that as I cheer only for the Leafs. If you could be truly neutral when Boston and Vancouver played I guess I could consider that as you cheer for both, but I just can't fathom that. Edit: I finished the video and Shannon you say explicitly that Vancouver is your #1, ok then I can understand. Boston is just a very strong #2 for you.

I can relate as I’m a Kings/Ducks fan. I became a Kings fan full time when I got satellite 📡 in 2008; I became a Ducks fan when they were “Mighty” in the mid-90s. A lot of people were and still are saying that I can’t root for these two teams at all under any circumstances and that I must choose one.

I fully support people to cheer for whoever you want, the more Hockey fans there are the better. But I can see how people would be surprised that you like two teams that are both rivals. I'm a Hawks fan, and as a soft 2nd team kinda float between Ottawa and Florida.

To hell with all the comments stating that it’s impossible to cheer for both teams. I say it is possible! In fact, I’ll even go far as to say that you must root for each of the 32 teams in the NHL with 100% equality. That’s right, on every single goal you must both emphatically love and completely despise the goal scorer at the exact same time! In every single big hit you must smear both the defender for the dirty hit and the puck handler for not keeping their head up. This holds true for every citizen of Earth. They all have to root for every team, even the players themselves. If a player slew foots another. The slew-footer must challenge themselves to a fight in defense of the other guy.
