Huge cricket (and Foolish Baseball) fan here - this is maybe going to sound ignorant as heck but one of the joys of cricket is that each team must pick 11 players and then stick with those 11 players for the whole game - teams have to balance their bowling, batting and fielding skills by selection, and of course that means some people whose speciality is one discipline being challenged to participate in another. Watching a bowler try to bat is one of the most entertaining things in sport - not many sports feature someone, in meaningful gameplay, trying to do something they are actually quite bad at! So I'd recommend baseball drop the notion of relief pitchers and require that each team designates 9 players at the start of each game - and ONLY these 9 players can do anything in the game (pitch, bat) except an allowance for substitute fielders in the case of demonstrable injury. Watching your reserve pitcher swing a bat or try to dive for an outfield catch...I mean, who could hate that? And what if a team gambled on filling THREE of its spots with pitchers? Cricket may sound fusty to most of y'all but with the advent of Twenty20 it's actually had a bit of a popular revival - inspired by baseball in terms of game length and fielding standards - and I think the sports could be mutually conversant for the benefit of their ongoing survival

Okay I liked your early suggestions because they had to do with fan access to players in social media and such, but once you start talking about in game rule changes, while some may end up being a good thing, they will not have ANY effect on the popularity of the game. In fact, NO rule changes will have any long term effect, because there's nothing you can do to make the game seem like there's more action, when there isn't. Baseball will always be a game that lacks constant action, and mkaing it 10 - 20 minutes shorter won't change that. The true reason for baseball's declining popularity can only be explained by looking at why it became so big, despite the length and relative lack of action, in the first place. That reason is that baseball is the only sport of the big 3 (not including hockey) where the LIVE product is mountains better than the TV product, regardless of where your seats are. Football and Basketball are WAY better on TV unless you have amazing seats. Baseball, however, is like a completely different experience live. Pop flies look like they're going to homers for a few seconds, the pitchers pitch looks like it's going 1000 MPH and long throws from the outfield look insanely fast and hard thrown, like they were shot from a cannon. None of this truly translates to TV. So, when looking at why baseball became huge in the first place, you have to look at the baby boomer generation(and before), who went to games every day during the summer when they were teens. They fell in love with it, and became die hards, and passed that diehard fandom on to their kids. Problem is, the farther you get from that source of love, the more watered down the attempt to pass the game down becomes. So, what's the solution? Baseball has to go back to having 3 - 4 day games per week, as baseball looks the best during the day(especially in climates where it's gets chilly at night such as SF) and is more accessible for teens when during the day. Additionally, MLB needs to offer low cost seats to EVERY game, so teens and early 20's people can go to many live games during their summers off of high school or college. This is how you create new generations of obsessed super fans, by making it easier for them to go to a lot of live games, like our parents and grandparents did . Not by tweaking this little thing or that little thing about the game itself, hoping it will make people stop noticing how little action there actually is.

That being said, I think rules that are related to increasing the action ARE a good thing in conjunction to my previous suggestions. The rules I like are outlawing the over shift. The over shift is dramatically increasing the 3 true outcomes of baseball, walks, K's and Homers. This eliminates too much of the action.Fuck the Atlanta Braves for having pitchers with such great control that they had the stones to do it first (I think). And then don't allow hitters to step out of the batters box during an AB, and only allow them 3 time outs. If you watched Barry Bonds, you would notice that he never stepped out of the box. He never stalled. This will stop all of the showboating, stalling, and mind games. And PLEASE don't add the universal DH for the love of god. Talk about another way to eliminate action, and real strategy. How about This instead - Pitchers cannot throw anything but fastballs to other pitchers. If the pitchers all knew this, they would have much better luck at the plate. Honestly I can't believe pitchers in this generation have become so pampered and soft that they WANT this rule. I mean, isn't hitting what makes baseball fun? does anyone go to the fielding cages? And do away with replay too. I mean, seriously, am I the only one who liked seeing the manager go out and yell at one of the umps? That was like free entertainment, and now with replay, it's BS when they do it because they can check a close call. I say direct all ump teams to do a quick meeting over any controversial/super close calls, and tell them to get rid of the stigma around overturning a call. Other sports do it and it works well.

I like that you touched on Minor League baseball and taking care of players, because imho the levels of minor leagues are backwards in a way, Triple A and Double A are fine but once you get to Single A and lower levels it's all sorts of messed up. High A has the state leagues, Carolina League, California League, and Florida State League Mid A has the Midwest League and South Atlantic League Short A has the New York Penn League and another league but it escapes me right now and Rookie level leagues. some of this doesn't make sense because the state leagues are all shorter distance and play in fair weather locations (except Carolina league and I'll get to that) yet is somehow a higher level than Mid A and Short A where there's more travelling between states. The Carolina League isn't even totally in Carolina, there are more Carolina teams in the South Atlantic League than the Carolina League, which makes those parts of the minors all the more confusing. So from my point of view, minor league reform should be a necessity for not only better development but easing players better into a professional lifestyle. So High A becomes the new Low-A so that the freshest players, mostly teens, get their start there in fair weather states and areas so they can play and practice more and get used to the grind quicker and not have to travel far. Only then once a player gets better and moves up a level do they start to travel and get tested in non fair weather areas, high A would be the former Mid A, and Mid A would be the former Low A. This can help pitching prospects especially considering the stories I've heard from my bro who has been to Florida for spring training and dealt with high school pitchers pitching 90mph vs our state of Wisconsin pitchers at 70mph. It also doesn't help that sometimes I see 4 year college players start all the way in rookie league, there was a player I remember watching way back in 2007 in the Northwoods League (a collegiate summer wood bat league) who had a MONSTER season including tying the league record and lead with 40 stolen bases (and this is a short season) and was hitting .300. I thought he'd be a major leaguer for sure, but after he graduated from UC-Irvine, he didn't make his major league debut until *30*! He started all the way down in rookie ball despite having YEARS of experience on him playing at a high level (The player's name btw is Daniel Robertson). It makes me beg the question, WHY BOTHER!? The average rookie age in baseball is like 27, and this is because so many players get stuck in minor league hell. By the time they finally get to the majors, they're not going to get nearly enough stats for hall of fame status so to that I'm glad teams are starting to call up guys like Bryant or Harper sooner than later and not let them waste in the minors when they can be accruing stats for a possible hall of fame shot.
@FoolishBaseball5 жыл бұрын
I think you touched on a lot there. The grind is absolutely brutal, even if you have the talent to make it. Plus, you won't be making the big bucks until you hit arbitration. Making the bigs is one thing, but accruing enough service time to earn above the minimum salary is another.

What you're proposing is dangerous to the pitcher and the players' association would never agree to it. Personally, I think the length of a game is fine, it's the length of the season that should be shortened. What do we need 162 games for? Especially when nearly half of those games (76) are against the same four teams? I believe it was last year that they tried to start the season earlier in an effort to give teams more days off... but then this backfired for some teams because weather forced games to be postponed, thus negating some of those extra off days. EDIT: Some comments below say cut to 154. I can get behind this. It's a subtle change, and in doing so, the amount of games you play vs each team in your own division would likely be cut from 19 to 17. @awilliams40185 жыл бұрын
@@kyleweir689 Your comparisons don't make any sense. The rule isn't trying to limit how much a pitcher throws but how many changes of pitchers are made during innings and even in games. For example you don't usually see football teams changing quarterbacks between plays... there are no specialty quarterbacks, so why have specialty pitchers? And keep in mind baseball did fine for 100yrs without specialty relievers so this isn't so far fetched. This rule (or something similar to it) would solve a ton of problems that MLB is trying to fix but for some reason (s) is doing everything but addressing the elephant in the room. Teams should be encouraged to keep starting pitchers in games and reduce pitching changes made in games, especially during innings, and not worrying about how many times the manager comes to mound or automatic intentional walks.

I would take it a step further and propose that the starting pitcher has to face 27 batters, injuries aside. And if he gets injured and can’t face all 27, then he should be forced into injured reserve for 10 days or something like that. Pitchers need to learn how to run a marathon-not throw 4 shutout innings, then get pulled when their pitch count is at 100 in the 5th inning when they’ve walked their 7th batter. The games are taking longer, because pitchers are trying to nibble the plate with a pitch they can barely control because they’re giving it max physical effort, and it also encourages hitters to take every pitch until they see a hanger, which they can then hit a mile. It’s turned the game into a game Ks, walks, and home runs. Bring back the pitchers that can pump strikes and hitters that can hit a good pitch for a single.

I have a few ideas some I thought about some someone told me of the idea 1. Fewer pitchers allowed per 9 inning games idk what do do with extra innings more pitchers r being used every game and adding more commercials and early exits for the starter drags the pace of play 2. Reduce the time a reliever can warm up b4 play continues a clock is used the reduce time between innings y not do that for pitching changes 3. This one is crazy and probably won’t happen but after 1st and 3rd base the foul line extends fair territory by idk 1 or 2 degrees depending on which ballpark it’s in Y u may ask: Over the years Manfred wants a pitch clock to reduce time but what about the amount of pitches being thrown to a batter. Avg Pitches being thrown to a batter is increasing every year so and often a high fly ball lands out of bounds to be either catch, lands on the field or into the stands and I would like to catch a foul ball like everyone else it’s drags the time of the game over and over again so by extending fair territory a little bit (it may not Change much but worth a try) a few balls extremely close to the foul line be more likely to be fair and possibly more scoring opportunities in the game and many a tad more HRs

And for stadiums struggling to sell tickets should give them away to teachers, law enformenct, hospitals and ex-military, etc. Along with that I would consider 7inning games during the season or less games. As a baseball fanatic it’s so hard to stay excited when the rangers are god awful and you got 100 games left. Another idea is get rid of the DH. Having the pitcher hit makes the game so much more strategic and excited and like you pointed buts managers in the hot seat more. One last idea is to move the fences 20 feet back everywhere. The game has become 3 homeruns a game and nothing else. Bring back hit and runs, stealing, bunting, then squeezes all those little aspects make it so much more fun like when the royals won a few years ago how they were doing all of that.

Baseball is not as flashy as basketball and not as violent as football. For those reasons, it will never again be as popular as those sports. No "pace of play" initiative or other tweak will bring in new fans, and it'll simply piss off the ones you already have. It also doesn't help that baseball just isn't seen as "cool", especially to the urban inner city population. It'll always be seen as a stodgy old guy sport now, and unfortunately that makes it less relevant to your average dumb fan. Just like hockey. Which is stupid because both sports are awesome, but you have to appeal to the lowest common denominator to be relevant in the entertainment industry.

MLB needs to take a page from Japan's NPB playbook. They keep their games quick by limiting extra innings to 3 during a Regular Season game, allowing them to end in ties, which the teams earn a half game credit for. They recently added a 3 hour time limit, but that is due to a fear of a lack of power due to the loss of the Daichii Nuclear plant. However, it still helps speed up the game without out right damaging the game.

The decline in baseball's popularity is due to analytics. The math nerds have proven the most efficient/effective methods of winning baseball games, the problem is the most entertaining parts of baseball are not conducive towards winning. That is the real tragedy, the best way to win a baseball game is to play it in the most boring way possible. All of the problems you mentioned were still present when baseball was popular. Also analytics are why baseball takes forever. Nowadays players are taught to work pitch counts and trying to earn walks, this imo is the primary cause of longer games. Think about you the most entertaining/exciting plays, stolen bases, runners trying to take an extra base versus an amazing throw, collision on the base paths, amazing defensive plays like a double play, etc. Nowadays it’s so much more rare than the 90s to see balls put in play, you see so much more walks, strikeouts and homeruns. This might be controversial but unless homeruns are occurring at a record setting pace it isn’t that entertaining to see guys slowly trot around the bases (honestly I would rather they just made a rule where the runs count without having to trout around the baseball diamond). I would much rather watch base running drama versus amazing defensive fielding and throws. Back in the day players took pride in not striking out and putting the ball into play. They would literally choke up on the bat shorten their swing to make contact and try to put the ball in play. This had the side effect of shortening the game, lowering pitch counts and giving the opportunity for fans to see action (base runners versus the defence). Analytics have proven that the strikeout is literally the best way to make an out. 1. There is virtually no chance a strikeout will result in a double play and thus make 2 outs. And 2. Strikeouts typically require more pitches from the pitcher. By working pitch counts batters can have good at bats even if they strikeout. This change in mentality is shown when you see strikeout records being set almost constantly. 5 strikeout games and 200 strikeout seasons used to be a rarity for most of baseballs history nowadays they are much more common. Strikeouts similar to homeruns are not entertaining unless occurring at a record breaking pace. Analytics have proven how impactful walking is towards winning. Walks have no chance of resulting in a double play and usually run up a pitchers pitch count. Nowadays a lot of batters make a living based on their ability to get walked. Walks are boring and make the game take forever. Analytics proving the efficacy of walks and the fact that strikeouts are not that bad has lead to a generation of hitters reluctant to put balls in play and hav extended game times and made complete games very rare. Analytics have proven that in almost all circumstances stealing a base isn’t worth the risk. Base stealing used to be a chance to see some action in a baseball game that largely doesn’t exist today. We are at the point where if you understand the numbers you realize stealing bases is mostly stupid. Basically any creative use/risk of making outs to move the runner over is stupid. Eg bunting, sac flys, etc. The problem from an entertainment perspective is these plays used to generate movement and action and a chance for baseball players to display athleticism. Analytics has proven putting the play in play is stupid and you are better off just trying to pull the ball for homeruns no matter how badly this hurts your average (which is also proven by the math nerds to be an overrated stat). The problem is this results in a ton of strikeouts and homeruns are not really entertaining. Ichiro once said he could hit 40 hrs in a season if he tried to pull the ball every at bat, but the problem was he would bat .220. Gary Sheffield once said the only thing preventing him from hitting more homeruns was that he took pride in not striking out. Ty Cobb once hit 3 hrs in a game to prove he could if he just pulled the ball. We are seeing homeruns rates and strikeout rates explode because batters have been taught to pull the ball and advised against making contact to put the ball in play. This is also why we see so many ridiculous shifts. All of these analytical optimizations to baseball have increased the chance to win a game at the cost of the entertainment value of the game.

I've long been an advocate of the 3 batter minimum but with one amendment-it's a 3 batter minimum or the end of an inning-whichever comes first. The specialist can still pitch, and the game still moves along. It's only in the late innings when a game bogs down. It's not the length of a game people have a problem with, it's the pace.

Football began to replace baseball as the go-to game with the advent of TV. Games broadcast on radio when every action was colorfully described caught attention. But TV replaced words with pictures and the TV screen has, to this point, not been used effectively to communicate the complex strategy of baseball. Football is a "flat" game played on a board which fairly easily fits on a TV screen. Baseball is more like 3-D chess with strategy employed on multiple levels. One possible option that is available with modern technology and flat panel screens is to show baseball in 3 or 4 split screen images. This is already done to some extent with a speedy runner on and likely to steal second. Views of player placement in the outfield, shifts in the infield, and views from the pitcher's direction and the batter's would give a more complete impression of the action. And can we get more cameras? They don't all have to be the big, hulking cameras. Throw in a few GoPros and maybe a drone view. And mic-up the field. Nothing like the crack of a homerun or Max Sherzer grunting his way to a strikeout! Make the game visually and audibly exciting for the TV or streaming viewer...nothing like watching a 95 mph fastball come directly at YOUR head! And before everyone tells me how this can't be done, why doesn't someone try it? We learn as much from failures as successes.

The three-batter minimum is close, but what's super-frustrating is when the pitcher RETIRES his batter and comes out. I'd say that a reliever has to stay in until (i) he allows a base runner, (ii) he finishes the inning or (iii) a pinch-hitter is announced. (You could also allow it if there's a change in the inherited runners.) ETA: On the offensive side, we should also ban pinch-runners for pinch-hitters. If you don't think the scheduled hitter can get the job done, send in one person who will.

I know it sounds weird, but you could shave time off the average game by having whichever team is trailing bat first in the 9th. The most boring half of an inning is watching a team that already is leading by a lot try to tack on more runs in the top of the ninth. At that point you really just want to see if your closer can close it out. By having the trailing team bat first you get to see that right away, and if the team does make a comeback, you get to see it again in the bottom of the frame. I'd also like to see a change where pitchers can only throw to first once per batter for free. After that, every throw to first that doesn't pick off the runner costs being charged a ball to the batter. This would help reverse the old 'nothing slows down a game like speed' adage. It still keeps the basic cat and mouse game in place though. You don't want to waste that free throw so you let that runner get a little better lead, but not too much better. If you do throw over, well, now he knows he can take yet another half step because you have to be sure you are going to get him to throw over. It reduces the number of throws over, adds drama to the at bat, and unlike a balk it doesn't over award to the runner. It probably adds a few stolen bases to the game which helps make the base paths more exciting. It especially makes sense now that teams can walk a batter without having to pitch to him (since it could have given them an easier way to intentionally walk batter).

Honestly, related to the mound visits thing, if you're going with "lower mound visits", "three batter minimum", and "speed up pitches", I think one way to kill both birds with one stone: Any time a manager makes a mound visit or makes a mid-inning pitching change, it's an intentional walk. They can do as many as they want- but the batter at bat gets on base. Suddenly, all of these things have some strategy to them- do you let the pitcher die out there and replace them (potentially losing far more runs), or do you give up one additional base to see what's going on or replace them?

Shorter seasons. Nobody gives a shit about regular season games when there’s over 100 of them. Each one is practically meaningless.

Step one: stop calling it "the MLB"

1) Baseball DESPERATELY needs to fix their broadcast presentation. While I agree that baseball isn't constant action, the broadcast doesn't need to reinforce that. There is a shocking amount of dead air on radio broadcasts, and on TV the PBP and Analyst conversation sounds like two people chatting while waiting for the washing machine to finish. 2) Baseball needs more balls in play. Deaden the baseball, move the fences back, create zones for fielders to eliminate shifting. When it becomes unprofitable (or less profitable) to swing for the fences all the time, hitters will adjust. And with the elimination of shifts, there will be places to hit the ball. And since fewer hitters will be trying for homers, there should be fewer strikeouts. And if we can limit by rule pickoff throws to first, there should be more base stealing attempts, which is also exciting.

@@JoshuaKimbrough I disagree, Carolina has NFL, NHL, and NBA. PDX has Blazers (NBA), the Timbers (MLS), and the Thorns (NWSL). Theres more room for a major sports team. At the same time, 32 teams would balance the league

Originally I was against the batter flip idea. But now I’m starting to like it. But if you’re going to do it, I say let the teams switch hitters two or three times per game. But don’t allow any hitter to be switched more than once per game. I think perhaps changing the number of outs per inning could be really exciting too. Imagine if each team only played 7 innings, but in the 5th inning you got 4 outs or score and defend, in the 6th inning you got 5 outs and in the 7th inning you got 6 outs!!!! You would still have 27 outs in a game. But it would make the end of a game a lot more dramatic to watch. Of all the appeals of baseball, 3 outs per inning has never really been much of an appeal to the game.

Limit mound visits to three per nine innings make sure to use them wisely, each team gets one mound visit every extra inning, get the designated hitter to the national league in the next collective bargaining agreement, get a pitch clock even if it's only enforced with no runners on base because it's better than what we have now

The social media point is huge. Take Toronto for example. The Raptors and Toronto FC started KZbin behind the scene series some 7 years ago. The Maple Leafs started 1 4 years ago, and the Argonauts just started one. The Blue Jays are the only major Toronto sports team without one.
