If the NBA/MLB/NFL placed their camera at a 45 degree angle, so high it took in the first five rows of seats, destroying all concept of speed, trajectory, effort, their viewers would storm the TV station. You only have to look at the cost of the tickets: lowest rows behind court prohibitively expensive---outer space where camera is for 99% of broadcast, cheapest.. Insane that tennis is supposedly a sport of smart people.

Really like the idea of the camera angle.. and 1000% on the open seats.. I have been to many us open matches where there best seats are always empty especially in a late night match. It's also a bad look on TV!!

So right about camera angles! The high view above the court shows more of the sponsors’ names than what the players are doing on court, and the players themselves take up such a small portion of the screen that you just can’t see much of what they’re actually doing, besides their position on the court. But even better than a camera behind one player would be an angle from the side near one baseline, zooming in close enough to see exactly what the players are doing, how they are moving, the stress of reaching for a difficult ball, what their swings look like, and how fast the ball is moving and how low over the net it usually is. I’ve seen amateur videos from this angle taken by fans during matches, and they are so much more compelling and insightful about the game than anything I’ve ever seen from a television broadcast. There’s one of Nadal and Federer at Roland Garros that makes you feel like you’re there in the dirt with them, and it completely changed my understanding of the game.

One of the most interesting things about tennis is the contrasting game styles. I see making court surfaces more varied would help with that. And the courts would be a test for players to see who can adapt their game.

Hi roddick.. This podcast is the perfect platform for me to vent.. Not at you but the people in charge of broadcasting tennis but DO Not actually watch tennis on TV. I'm referring to the color of the court. On some courts because of the color you can hardly pick up the ball in play.. And by the way I do have A HDTV. Just a simple change of court color to contrast with the color of the ball will enhance the tennis experience for millions of tennis fans around the world. ANDY PLEASE READ THIS !! Several years ago I contacted the President of the Tennis channel thru email and discussed this and he said he agreed with me and would talk to his people and yet nothing happened.. I am talking about showing serve speed for the television viewer. They do it for baseball pitch speed. Even golf will provide club head speeds but when I watch tennis I have to try and find the on court speed clock to see the serve speed. It's very annoying. I want to know how fast that out wide serve was. Serve speed is crucial to the players strategy. The people in the stands get provided that info but the at home viewer does not. How difficult would it be to show serve speed under the box score. They do it in baseball. ( pitch speed. ) The more info provided to the home viewer increases the enjoyment and understanding of the match. Love your podcast.

Absolutely loved watching the practice courts when my dad and I went to go see tennis at the ATP championships in Cincinnati. Watching Chang practice, Edberg’s habits, and the time when Sampras/Courier were hitting. Wow!

Back in 1992 there was a tournament in America called the Lipton Championship Jim Courier was the defending champ he won the original sunshine double in 1991 as his first big ,big breakthrough, he played a early round match against Carl Steeb an excellent German player of the late 80s early 90s .The broadcasters had a amazing court angle about 10 feet above and 15 feet behind the server with the server at the bottom of the screen and it looked amazing you really felt you were there Couriers huge snappy serve and massive inside out forehand just hitting through the opposition, the angle was just incredible......and I harldly ever saw that court angle again. I suspect its to do with sponsors you can't really see the varoius logos and posters and causal tennis fans don't really care enough to ask for better court angles to watch a match. Its almost the curse of loving the game so much, you notice how these little things could improve it so much

I've had this idea for some time now: An indoor court, lights very dim, with neon ball, lines, and net. Maybe players are required to wear black so it's more difficult to anticipate drop shots, slices, direction changes, etc. Sounds crazy but I think it would be amazing.

It wouldn't hurt to flash some stats up at change of ends instead of end of set. Get rotation speeds/forehand/backhand/percentages/UE. Wider variation of speeds on surfaces. Despite hard/clay/grass there could be more done here with the variation of those...

Tennis must do everything possible to increase effective playing time. To me, everything else can take a back seat until then. Having to sit through, on average, five-ish minutes of breaks for every minute of rallying will always make it hard for casual sports fans to fall in love with the sport.

100% It's not just that it's inconvenient; working people with kids literally can't do it. They don't have the time to watch Iga read from her diary or Rublev chewing on a chunk of banana. If they want this demographic to get into tennis, they have to do a better job with match time.

But, baseball. Massive worldwide fan base and literally in a 2.5 to 3 hour game there is 11 to 12 minutes of actual action. A guy, some time back, timed all the action in baseball and gave 1 second for every pitch that didn’t result in action and came up with that average over 10 games.

Tennis is my favorite sport but I have to say that the NBA excels at keeping viewers engaged with exciting camera work and crowd activities during commercials and timeouts. I recently watched the Estoril Open, and it felt so dull when a player took a bathroom break, there was no music - just people looking at their phones or the empty court.

DJs play loud music at tennis tournaments, announcers give out prizes, crowds do the wave, kiss cam, dancing, etc. Don't just watch one small 250 tournament that won't even be on the 2025 schedule and assume across the board.

I would really like to see tennis go to 1 serve only. This would eliminate all the serve-botting so we can return to faster courts and lighter balls to speed up the game and reduce injuries for the players. The ever slowing courts and heavier balls are killing the players with increasing shoulder/elbow/wrist injuries, and making tennis increasingly unwatchable especially for the Women's game which all look like in slo-mo. And still it doesn't eliminate the serve-botting, it just makes it even harder for the smaller/weaker players to survive the tour. Injuries have increased significantly especially for the women since WTA started pushing XD balls on all slow as mud North American hard courts since last August - Muchova, Burrage(both had wrist surgeries), Mirra Andreeva(wrist again), Keys, Rybakina, Kalinskaya, Fernandez(shoulder), Badosa, Andreescu, Krejcikova, Swan, Raducanu(back), Pegula(neck)...how many more? It's madness. WTA needs to return to RD balls ASAP but long term the only way to solve this problem is to go to 1 serve only. Patrick Mouratoglou did this for the UTT tour and the tennis is much more fun to watch, no one misses the big serves.

Stadium seating would really need to change the paradigm. Like Aus open tried this year with the bar on the court, I wanna see people walking around like they did at the Copper Box, talking during points like UTS, enter whenever they want like Aus open did this year….. Would also like to see no second serve or lets too. Could work well.

Agree with no lets. If I can win a point off a ground stroke that hits the net cord then why is the serve different? I believe they got rid of lets at the college level in the USA.

Lets not be too hasty to change the sport too much. I agree with Andy about the need for better camera angles and consistency with the ball bounces. All of these ideas simply enhances an already quality product. I do however disagree with the other guy about tennis not being "cool" enough. The last thing we need is for this great sport to completely lose it's identity. No matter what you do, the casual fan just won't watch tennis and appreciate the level of skill and athleticism that goes into what these players are able to do at the highest level.

I agree with all of these. For me though, the court level camera angle is the most important. the current angle from the space station is horrible. Nobody that likes tennis likes to watch it from directly above the court. Also, does tennis have like a commissioner? And can it be Andy?

The more one knows about how the game is played, what the rules and challenges are, the more enjoyable it is for spectators. Little vignettes or tips in these areas might be nice. I have followed tennis since the 70s and I read about tennis, and there are nice KZbin videos, but one has to take initiative to learn. The TC can improve access to these things.

Two best suggestions: camera angles, top points. Many of the others I don't like. I watch tennis every day, but mostly men's match highlights on youtube. The ATP should be producing and posting those videos. I might even watch an entire match if most/all of the dead time between points was excised.

@@got2bjosh Yeah, OK. I didn't realize that Tennis TV is the OFFICIAL live streaming service of the ATP Tour. I also watch a lot of Challenger Tour highlights with players such as Paire, Tomic, and Gasquet. Ditto for older matches with players such as Connors.

Why do they have tendency to make hard courts slower these days? to make a match longer or what is the rationale behind?

Surface homogenization was introduced to induce European dominance after decades of American rule. Eurasian players tend not to be as good at serving, but are much better on return. Slower surfaces give Eurasian players more time on the ball. Such conditions allowed the Big 3 to dominate across the biggest tournaments. EVERYTHING was slower, even grass! But matches became way too long, injuries increased year to year, and now that the Big 3 are old & done people want faster courts again.

Generally agree. One thing: I'm an amateur, invest in SwingVision, and have the subscription, it's a great tool, but their AI shot tracking doesn't show things as fast as they are, I think. I plugged in some highlights from pros serving in the 120s and 130s and Swing Vision said they were serving in the 80s and 90s and low 100s generally, which made me feel a lot better about my serve but still

Two out three sets for everyone at the majors. The first three rounds of the majors were two out of three from '72-'75 and in 1977, the last year the US Open was played on clay, the first four rounds were best of three. Now, everyone gets paid the same and they should all play the same. Also, if all matches were best of three it would help with the scheduling problems that are running matches into the middle of the night.

The scoring and tournament formats need to be mixed up. For example, have more round robins in tournaments (say groups of 4 with 1- set matches -> all players play 3 sets, all matches per group played in a day)

In the early rounds, I hate watching tennis on TV where they split the screen to show two matches at once. I get motion sickness and I have to change the channel. Also, it's difficult to concentrate on both matches at the same time. When two important matches are being played at the same time, it's OK to introduce delays into each match. Don't take a second away from either one. Show both matches in their entirety. Even worse, this weekend I was watching golf and they split the screen. On the left was a small window showing the live golf game and on the right they were playing TV commercials. It was terrible.

Some of our games greatest moments are arguments...who cares if the robots make the game more fair for the players...it is not about the players it is about the fans....everyone loves a good argument...even the fans who swear they don't...Andy has had some great confrontations and I love him for that. Crazy idea but it's one John McEnroe promoted for decades. Bring back wooden rackets. It's not going to happen. I know that but imagine baseball being played with aluminum bats. Wooden rackets would bring volleying back to tennis and make the game far more entertaining to watch and there would be less injuries.

The Queens audience isn't the UTS LA audience. There were a lot of empty seats at Miami Final. Also, ATP/WTA should find ways to financially support talents like Dustin Brown - an extraordinarily GIFTED player who struggled financially -- apparently the big corporate sponsors didn't like his image enough to endorse him, but what a loss for the tennis fans that he didn't reach the top and is retiring this year. Somebody's gotta figure out the broadcast/streaming nightmare in the U.S. (maybe it's the same in Europe and elsewhere) -- young people are not buying cable packages like the old days and trying to watch tennis as an avid fan is a HASSLE! Tennis Channel has very limited coverage and you're stuck with whatever TC execs decide to cover ; Tennis TV is superb but only covers ATP and none of the slams - ESPN doesn't give you full coverage of the slams unless you get ESPN 2 and ESPN + ... seriously yuck! And then people are scratching their heads like, we're losing fans b/c Federer, Nadal and Djokovic are on their way out. NO! It takes a masters degree to figure out how to watch tennis in the US. Agreed. You need, like, 4 App/tv packages to watch a season of tennis. I’d pay for Tennis TV or the TC if I knew I’d get access to ALL of the majors, and most of the 500 and 250 levels. ATP and WTA. A response to decades of American, serve-dominant rule across both tours, surface homogenization (i.e- slower court speeds across ALL surfaces) was introduced to return the edge to Eurasian players who tended to be weaker servers but stronger returners. Slower speeds allowed for more time on the ball which led to a decrease in net play and an increase in extended baseline rallying. Advancements in racket and string technology as well as player conditioning were contributing factors. These slower court conditions across all surfaces gave rise to the Big 3. Their rivalry in turn became big business for the tour, its tournaments, and their media outlets. Business like stable conditions. As such, the Big 3 were allowed to dominate across the biggest tournaments for decades through favorable, unchanging conditions. Less variety allowed for more sustained dominance utilizing a high percentage, counterpunching game style. The downside of a monolithic approach to tennis dominated by the few on slower surfaces is that as successive generations remain suppressed in the baseline wars, matches became too long and player injuries mounted year to year. Now the Big 3 are old and done and prohibitively high ticket sales have led to the average ages of live audiences skewing older. Business are looking to attract younger audiences who grew up on social media, prefer shorter running times, and want younger stars. The Next Gen cohort has become key in driving renewed interest. They have reintroduced aggressive net play into the game and have moved away from counterpunching extended baseline rallies as the default strategy. As such, the call for faster courts and shorter matches has increased. UTS and exhibition matches like Tie Break Tens have also spurred on innovation in the format. Since 2017, ATP has used Next Gen Finals as a key incubator event for innovation in the game.

Fully agree. The worst paid player in the NFL, NBA and MLB can easily make a living off the lowest paid salary. In tennis if you are outside the top 100 you have to hope fans will let you stay in their house and pay for a dinner or two so they don’t lose money to play a tournament. I’ll bet there are hundreds of players out there who can’t afford to fly and play who could compete with the best.

Unpopular opinion: ONE SERVE. So much of the down time is faulting and service return errors. Yes, aces are cool, but they’re a small price to pay so we can more than double the amount of rallies per time watched. Not only that, but it would dramatically reduce the height advantage in tennis, which would drastically mathematically increase the talent pool, and thereby the talent at the top as well.

You got different types of fans. Some want tons of stats and figures. Some want excitement and theatre. Some want elitism and cucumber sandwiches and strawberries. Someone like Kyrgios comes along and throws in the theatre, the language, the rapport with fans, the passion and emotion...and the cucumber sandwich brigade throw the book at him. The stats and figures guys call him a loser. The 'class' call him a clown. He clocks up the injuries and fines trying to please everyone and the media call him a tanker and a faker. So he turns his back on the sport. So you get two great matches per Masters 1000 and the rest is breadsticks. The comments say it's wonderful to have 'class' and good manners back. And you've lost huge percentage of your audience. Drama? Stats? Perfection?

⁠@ttacka totally agree that kits from Nike, Adidas and New Balance all suck!!! Total dumpster fire. I cringed what Alcaraz wore in Miami and to think that Carlos and Sinner are going to be wearing that for years is so sad unless they get some new designers there. Plus those 3 labels dress like 80% of the tour and I hate it when players come out on court wearing the same thing. Not good!!! Tennis is an individual sport their agents and managers need to think more out of the box and I get it that Nike pays the most so it’s hard to say no to that. Taylor Fritz made a great move by getting the hell out of Nike and going to Boss. Boss is a luxury brand not a sports brand and they only dress Matteo Berettini so he’s in great company there and it’s just him and Matteo not half the tour. Nike sucks!

Regarding the outfits tennis its objectively a disservice to the young up and coming pros and the audience if they look like they soiled their pants. Keep the style current obviously but you don't see the absurdity in design in the EPL, NBA, etc.

Please make Hawkeye line calling COMPULSORY EVERYWHERE!!!!!! Can’t stand the drama and the pauses because of human line calling. The data is clear that the machine is better than humans at that!!!!!!!

Disagree big time about the camera angle. I hate hate hate the view from just behind the player, where you can't see the ball on the other side. Bird's eye view is the only way to go.
