... I showed a way to modify lockable Pelican Case latches in order to make them key-retaining. That process, while effective, was a little klunky and messy. I'm so pleased to show you all a much easier way to do that yourself with a tiny 3D printed part.
The Pelican Case Locking Latches are here, BTW...

... the code CORETSA should take $6 off those sets of latches. (not a sponsored deal or affiliate link... we get nothing if you buy these latches. the supplier simply likes supporting folk.)
You can download the 3D printable file for this project here...

New product idea - TSA compliant locks that are made of steel and the key can only be removed when the lock is actually locking your bag. Add some springs to the hinges so the lid will be fully open unless it's properly closed.

@@KaraKobold That's just if they can't unlock it they'll drill it out, but to force them to re-lock it then they'll have to close and lock it properly. If they do it right then they won't have a problem. If they try to take short cuts then they'll discover that they'll have to close it properly to get the key back. Make the lock mechanism out of high grade stainless steel and drilling would take longer than to do it the right way.

the airports each have only a set number of keys. that is a "safety feature" according to the original plan for the TSA locks. they are signed out each time they are used and signed back in. they are not supposed to just lay on the table for 6 minutes during a check. That also means during busy times someone is waiting for the keys to complete the next persons inspection and must wait till they are signed in and then will need to go back and request them again from the management to complete the bag once again. obviously, that is seems like someone is just trying to make your bag get bumped to the next flight. each worker, the ones who actually care that your bag is on the flight, are getting zero support from the mgt or the cust. guess that is the description of a thankless job. lol. along with that a few of the keys are so skinny that they break and so one set will be missing a key for #3 and #7. so that system is not the best. better is to have a lock that can be locked to pull the key, then will close and lock automatically if you close the clasp. ask me how I know. lol. good luck

I work in Airport Operations at a medium sized US airport. TSA is security theater to make the flying public feel like "something is being done". Where is the real security? It's you and me. Passengers who are aware of their surroundings and call out things out place. Airport employees paying extra attention as well. The final check is the flight and cabin crews. Think Neighborhood Watch and apply that to an airport...that is how it really works.

The Assa Abloy locks have a key retaining option by moving a pin on the tail piece. With the pin in place it basically locks the tail piece and the locking bar together so if the padlock is unlocked with the shackle out the locking bar cannot close which also means the key cannot turn and stays in the unlocked position.

@@mattgayda2840 That's been covered in other videos ad nauseam. Dev has also covered his procedures in multiple videos for mitigating the risk of TSA cutting locks on firearms cases but sometimes it happens and crappy hinge locks that force the TSA to lock the case are better than no locks until you're reunited with your case and can install the spare locks he recommends you carry in your carry-on bag.

@kernelpickle
@kernelpickle Жыл бұрын
That’s an idiotic, knee-jerk reactionary response to something that only needs some adjustments to improve the process their effectiveness. It would be completely idiotic to abolish the TSA, because despite their flaws and things they could improve upon they have a solid record of preventing dipshits from sneaking weapons and potentially dangerous items onto planes, and so far the only notable issue post 9/11 was the shoebomber, who found the one place that we didn’t have them checking at that time, and that attack was luckily thwarted by passengers, and now we have to take off our shoes to mitigate against another one of those. Sure, they do dumb things sometimes-like hassling people for trying to being plastic cutlery onto flights, but even if they misinterpreted the rules and were clearly being too strict about what they allowed-I don’t mind false positives like that, because even though it’s clearly not an issue as they hand out real butter knives to passengers who are on flights long enough to get served meals, it is far better than false negatives. Give me a little overzealous security that is on higher alert than one that isn’t and has allowed an untold amount of contraband to slip through. If you want to push them to update their training, update rules to be even more clear cut so that they don’t get confused by the wording. Those are all helpful and welcome suggestions, but immediately throwing the baby out with the bath water is actually worse than leaving things the same as they are now.

I mentioned this in the other video but I would like a followup video regarding how the TSA treat these locks because they have 1 key meaning one stays unlatched because it doesn't clip back when the key is removed. A nice upgrade would be somehow making these locks be clipable while the key is removed and it is locked (like a one way attachment, being able to snap it back into position but not being able to remove it without the key, all while it is locked) this would solve the potential issue of one or both of the locks not being reclipped due to laziness.

I think a dual key lock would be the way to go. The TSA key only opens the lock once, and once relocked will require the actual key to open again. Make sure the lock being open doesn't allow them to fuck with the internals without the actual key. TSA key retention forces them to relock the lock.

Hmm, maybe storeroom style locks integrated into the clasps (locked unless the key is at that instant in the lock and turned) combined with strong opening springs and a camera triggered by opening and an audio triggered reminding them to lock the lock and instructions for a three year old to relock it. That way the bag won't stay closed unless it's locked and there's a big reminder plus a who do it picture if that somehow fails to call out the noncompliant inspector.

Okay, crazy idea: could you make a "trap lock" that accepts a unknown key and then somehow records the bitting after turning. And keeps that record. To let you decode it later? And how can it still be functional as a lock for like a master key without disturbing the recorded bitting of an unknown key?
@RNMSC

I would think that it would be reasonably easy to make a metal replacement for the cam set that is cast with aluminum or pot metal so you don't have to be concerned that someone sets their lock up so that the only way you can remove the key is with it unlocked. Make one with the JB Weld, or with this adapter, to create a hiigh temp RTV mold, and you should be able to cast multiple. And the old ones could end up being stock for making new ones.

I am curious how long these would hold up when printed in PLA and the black latch is facing direct sunlight. I think PLA starts to deform around 95F or thereabouts. PETG may be the better filament from a strength and temperature stability point of view, though it tends to be a little more difficult to print with due to that same temperature increase.
@SnakebitSTI

In practical terms, PLA's glass transition temperature is below "car in the sun on a hot day" temperature.
@andrewdreasler428

PETG is more for the 'closed chamber' FDM printers than the 'open frame' printers. a proper closed chamber printer will maintain the 'bed temperature' in the entire build space, allowing the part to print without the uneven mid-print shrinkage that happens with open-frame printing of PETG.

I'm curious what the TSA procedure would be if they were just presented with locks they were completely unable to destructively bypass with the tools on hand? Would they just refuse to ship it? More trouble than it's worth? One would assume you could exceed the amount of tools and effort they had available with something like recessed puck locks that hid the hasps and shackles.

I doubt this comment will be seen but I might have a solution for your gun problems. Could you manufacturer a case that has internal Handle type metal bars that connect to a metal plate in the bottom of the case with a plexiglass panel that slots over the bars with enough space to get a lock around it keeping everything locked internally but entirely visible when the case is open and use tsa locks on the outside. The tsa is happy they get to snoop on you pretending to do work but they can’t actually get to the firearms because it’s locked behind a screen of plexiglass.

It really depends on what airports you go through. ATL, DTW, ORD and JFK have been the large airports that have *always* messed my stuff up. PWM, DIA, DEN have not. Smaller airports rarely have anyone messing with my stuff or breaking my cases or luggage, probably because smaller airports are more likely to hold people accountable than massive major city airports.

@@yucannthahvitt251 IAD is my home airport, not the biggest, but one of the most inconvenient. I don't remember ever getting an inspection out of there, but I have gotten my bags out of there with only my cable ties holding the lid closed before I went to the case with TSA latches. Think that had more to do with tired handlers than TSA. Only done ATL once as an endpoint. ORD and JFK usually are driving trips. DTW hasn't ever been anything but a connector for me, thankfully.
