How Canon Created the Perfect film Camera

As a teenager I had always dreamed of owning a Canon F-1. My first camera was a Canon TL. Then I moved up to a Canon AE-1. I think I paid about $300 for that body while an F-1 was selling for around $1200. The F-1 was a professional camera favored by sports photographers. At any major sporting event, you would see a long line of photographers with their distinctive white Canon lenses, following the action. Fast forward 30 years, when digital cameras were taking over the world and professionals were giving away their film cameras at bargain basement prices. I was able to pick up around 7 F-1's for about $1200. I probably have 100 different 35mm cameras but my F-1 is always my go to camera around town and for driving trips. I have Canon lenses from 20mm to 1200mm. The F-1 is super solid in build, extremely reliable, and simple to use. It is full featured and with the F-1N version the system is complete with anything you could want. I never really made the switch to the more electronic Canons like the T-90 or their autofocus line. I own the Nikon series from the F to the F5. Beautiful cameras but I never found the ease of use that I find with the F-1. I never got used to the NON AI, Ai, AiS lens metering system. If you ever saw the Nikon compatibility chart, you'd know what I mean. Thank you for doing a video on this gem of a camera that has become forgotten in this digital age.

Much how I feel about the PEntax K1000. But this video inspired sme to get a Canon -F-1. I love my Canon AE-1 already and have some lovely primes.

@@danienelphoto If I can offer a tip, get the F-1 New model with the AE finder. It is the top of the line. These days, it is not priced that much higher than any other F-1 version. If possible, see if you can find one that has had a CLA somewhat recently so all the functions have been checked and repaired. I think if you shop around you could probably find an excellent example for around $300. One of the best tips in terms of wear is how much of the finish is intact. The black mat paint is very thin and the brass will show through if it has been used a lot. No brass showing is a sign it has had little use and has been well cared for. Professionals usually wore the hell out of these and it shows in the finish. The F-1 will never develop the Canon squeak like all of the A series cameras.

I once had an F-1 that was given to me by my father. It was stolen from my vehicle in a busy place where I would have easily witnessed the theft had I only turned my head a few degrees from where I was sitting the whole time. Twenty years later is still rots me to the core every time I think about it. I spent big money on a Nikon F5 that I though would replace the loss I felt. It’s a nice camera that always produced fantastic photos but somehow it has never had the same magic as that Canon did. This video brought me back to the love I had for that camera. I think I will now try to find one to buy.

I love the F1 but I don’t know about the Nikon problem, essentially you can use all of those lenses on any Nikon film body from 1959 all the way to the F6.

One thing I *loved* about Canons, while they had it... was the QL (quick-load) mechanism. Made loading a camera a delight, *especially* if you intended/needed to remove a partially-shot roll for later use, since it made loading a roll to a specific *sprocket* 100% predictable. That was a brilliant mechanism.

Funny you should say that. First thing I noticed about these photos was their beautiful "atmosphere". And I am a huge fan of digital. Growing up in the era of film, the main thing it taught me is to compose a shot carefully.

I really believe it has to do with the grain of film, versus the pixels of digital photos. More apparent in imperfect pictures on both sides, and more subtle and ambiguous the crisper and better exposed. Color is also another great factor in the aesthetic that digital filter can closely imitate, but without the combined grain of film, digital will never reach the ethereal and mysterious beauty of film.

I saw this video and have been looking to buy a analog camera from this era and instantly looked if i could find one for cheap, and i found one for next to nothing. The dude who owned it hasnt used it in years and thought it was time for him to sell it, he asked me what i was going to do with it after I bought it and was happy i wan't reselling or just for show on the shelf. I just got my F-1 old about a week ago. Bought it after seeing the video Technology Connections made on the light meter. Absolutely wonderful camera! I love the hefty construction. Today I received my first batch of scans of the first roll of portra 400 I put through it. Boy am I glad to see the camera is working and exposing properly! 😅

En 1975 j'achetai mon premier réflex, un Canon FTb QL, avec son 50mm f/1.8. Il est une fois tombé de mon épaule alors que je courais (en 1978) avec un lourd Vivitar 85-205 mm tout métal fixé dessus, le dos s'est ouvert, je l'ai refermé et j'ai continué à l'utiliser sans problème. Je n'ai eu à le faire réviser (nettoyage, changement des mousses) qu'une fois. Il a subi le désert, la forêt amazonienne, bref un usage assez rock'n'roll. Ces tanks avaient bien des qualités 😉

@Mike Zielinski I probably have used/owned 100+ different cameras but the F-1 New with the AE finder is the one I carry when shooting film. I've carried it for years. I have the motor drive for it so it is a beast. The F-1 became a bargain when the autofocus Canons came out and have only gotten cheaper in the digital era. One thing I can say is that I am seeing fewer and fewer on the market. Eventually the supply will have to dry up. The same thing is happening to medium format cameras.

This camera is a beast. I have and still use my A-1 and sometimes my AE-1 program. They are light and tiny compared to the F-1. I used to borrow the F-1 from a friend occasionally. I really should get one before they get too expensive. The F1 is magnificent to use

started life in 6th grade shooting with a Canon EX-auto. kind of a precursor to the AE-1 but it had proprietary lenses that screwed into some sort of mount permanently attached to the body. i borrowed an FTb from the high school during a photography class and then for my senior year graduation gift i got an AE-1/50f1.8 kit. i used it for 1000s of rolls of film in high school, college on the newspaper and for a 6 month internship with Gannett News (they publish USAToday) and for a good part of an 8 year Air Force career instead of the USAFs issue Nikon F3. my ex wife bought me an F1n for Christmas (with help from her parents and my parents because they were EXPENSIVE) 1987. i still have both of those bodies and a great PJ kit of primes. i just need to find the motivation to get them out and use them. oh, the AE-1 has the infamous mirror return squeak lol

@@patricksweeney6334 the lubrication on the mirror return hinge/mechanism is prone to drying out and then when the mirror returns, it sounds like the camera is dying. there's tutorials for removing the top plate and getting a needle oiler in there but you still need to 'use the force' to find where it needs to go

Thank you for posting this. The F1 is an absolute legend. Would love to have this one. At the moment, I have it's sort of twin - Canon EF aka The Black Beauty. Half mechanical, half electronic. The bane of every camera repairman, as they say. Haha. You are right in saying that there is always on the spot exposure, accurate and sharp photos. I absolutely adore this camera. I can only imagine what the F1 is like when I shoot it.

I love my Canon A1, it was my first film camera (that I bought) and it like the F1 is solid, it's extremely fun and tactile to use and it takes great photos. But for as long as I have wanted any film camera I've wanted an F1. Every now and then I see one come up and I sit hovering my mouse of the buy button but I never do. I'm waiting for the day that the perfect one comes up for sale. I love waist level viewfinding and having a 70's-80's all mechanical 35mm slr with one is my dream camera.

5:37 I wished you would take a picture of fast moving subject s.a. a plane or biker or runner but Yes and that 1/2000 was something like the dark competitor, Nikon F3 that could not be ignored! Surprisingly even then, similar to the current digital era that the so-called "Top of the line, Professional Camera Body", always has to have a lower spects s.a. lower MP etc, in this case, Nikon FE2 with 1/4000 would beat both (But would not come with all the fancy versatility these flagships would offer s.a. changeable view finder and focusing screen, as you show here). While I certainly love the build quality of my F1 new camera, the weight tends to influence me to favor bringing out my AE-1. I got my hands on a waist level viewfinder and it can be a lot of fun to shoot it that way.

which battery did you use? lots online about the f-1 and f-1n requiring a 1.35v to be accurate as it doesnt have a bridge circuit to allow 1.55v SR44. it would be an interesting vid to test your camera with zinc air 1,35 v 675 hearing aid (1,45v) v SR44 silver oxide1,55v . sr44 is better than lr44 as constant voltage til it dies. lr44s will deliver reduced voltage as they die. slide film is much less forgiving which would make for a more demanding test. as this was a pro camera , that would have been the film of choice.

This video made me go out and buy a canon F1. Bought one for $100, light meter is off by 2 stops and mirror has a little issue. Other than that, I love this camera, it feels nice and works really well. Cant wait to use it more in the future!

The light meter is off because you might be using the wrong battery. The mercury battery that the F1 was designed for is no longer being made. There are adapters available for the SR44 battery. The F1 required 1.35v mercury oxide battery. I stopped using the onboard meter years ago and have been using a 1° spot meter I shoot 645 and 4x5 so my spot meter is never out of my grasp. I think Amazon has the battery adapter. I know they re very affordable. Good luck.

Canon 35mm cameras from this era is now receiving the recognition they deserve partly due to the recognition and realization Canon FD/FL lenses are some of the very best 35mm film lenses made. Much of the dismissal of Canon SLR bodies as being "inferior" and lesser than the Nikon 35mm cameras from that era had much to do with Marketing. Nikon was the first SLR to gain recognition among Photojournalist and similar working photographers as being superior to a Leica M series range finder for some image making needs. That plus Nikon Professional Services (NPS) which supported working photographers in ways that was never previously done gained Nikon a stellar reputation among working 35mm photographers. Canon worked on innovations such as automated exposure (A-1, AE-1 and others) and design-production of very high quality cameras at modest cost relative to their offerings. This is one of the reasons why the Canon AE-1 and that entire Canon A series sold over a Million cameras with a majority of them functional and continuing to make images to this day. IMO, the best 35mm SLR from that era was the Canon "New F1" which was the last version of the F1. That camera is remarkably tough, reliable, durable, proven under some of the most remanding real world image making conditions possible. Having run many thousand rolls of 35mm film in and out of three Canon New F-1 bodies during the 1980's to late 1990's, these three New F-1 camera bodies proved to have total reliability and durability, they always worked as they should never having any problems under the most difficult image making conditions. Time for recognition of what Canon achieved with their SLR camera bodies might have come due to the design excellence and quality of production Canon put into the F1 from back in their day.

Nikon SLRs are overhyped and overrated with insecure users that only worships how great their lenses are because of backwards compatibility. It gets pretty tiring. Canon was right about discontinuing the FD system because that brings all their prices down and it doesn't create compatibility issues with their EF mount. Great bargains still exists but with more and more people knowing about the Canon FD system especially about the Canon F-1, I'm afraid that opportunity is getting slimmer.

During that era Canon introduced cultivated Calcium Fluorite crystals large enough with enough purity to be used in large aperture tele-photo lenses (the legendary 300mm f2.8 Fluorite), Aspheric elements for production lenses, individually selected corrector lens element during finish alignment to optimize optical performance of each individual lens produced. These optics technologies became the basis for the Canon K35 Cinema lens set used by Stanley Kubrick and many others. Today a good set of Canon K35 Cinema lens set sell for well into six figures of U$D due to the demand for their visual personality and ability to cover large sensor Cinema cameras of today's 8K video and more. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rGmsnZKiaNmobLM Canon made the correct decision to discontinue the FD lens mount (upset a large number Canon FD users) when making the technological move to autofocus. The technical demands of an electronic autofocus lens is completely different than a manual focus lens. Canon's EF completely electronic lens mount allowed Canon to technologically "leap frog" others by putting the focus and aperture motors in the lens allowed uber fast focusing and aperture control of lenses so taken for granted today. Nikon driven by backwards compatibility resorted to "screwdriver" driven focusing which could never drive lens focusing anywhere close to having the focus and aperture motor inside the lens. Just a few examples of Canon's innovations that have now become common and expected.

@@linjicakonikon7666 Matt black produces less reflective glare in real world bright sun and similar lighting conditions. That "ugly" matt black paint was done for functionality not for beauty, which is what working photographers needed. During the 1980's to later 1990's used three New F1 bodies to run many thousand rolls of 35mm film, none ever had a problem or failed under the most demanding conditions and difficult weather conditions. Not being "fully" mechanical means zero with that kind of proven durability, reliability and long term toughness. To believe 100% mechanical cameras are more "reliable" is an un-provable assertion as reliability, durability, toughness and more are a LOT more complex than just being 100% mechanical.

As a collector of camera's that hardly ever get used I need to periodically excercise them and while playing with my nF1 I discovered a few things that I did not like. Besides the breach lock, which lets be honest is clumsy, there were two glaring issues for me. When holding the camera to my eye, I found my fingers from each hand were touching when supporting the 24mm f2.8 FD lens from the underside. This issue I have never experinced in other camera's from my collection. The other concern I had was the obscuring of the shutter speed dial by the overhanging bracket attached to the prism housing and the associated requirement to lift the ring around the dial to set the camera into Auto mode. Other camera's just require you to depress a pin and allow you to clearly observe your settings. Otherwise, I really like the way exposure readings are applied in the viewfinder, much better than my favourite camera, Nikon F3.

Hello Mathieu. I just came across your excellent video. I must say that I found your shots with expired films are just fabulous. I love the pastel feel of the colours, they like paintings. I don't think you could reproduce that with fresh films, unless may be with some filters with a lot of experimentains with and scan editing software. I do have a lot of 5 to 7 years expired films stored in my freezer and refrigerator (Velvia 50 RVP, Provia 100, Fuji Superia, Reala, Kodak B&W films). I stopped doind any photography since 7 years after my Daughter passed away, as I didn't had the heart to it. I decided to back to it and use my forgotten Canon F1 (old model) and my Canon FT QL). I that time I was able to by the original Mercury batteries (that delivers the right voltage 1.3v), from a Russian guy from Moscow. I have following questions if you don't mind: 1. Which type of battery are you using with your Canon F1, any compensation needed and how long they last? 2. Would you recommend a Grid focussing screen (Canon Forcussing screen type D) for landscape photography. Actually I have the "E" type in my camera. I will highly appreciate you assistance. I will check out your other videos. Merci beaucoup, and fully enjoy your photography.

I own both and would say the Pentax LX is in many ways equal to the F-1, excellent lens line-up, massive list of accessories. The LX is certainly lighter. The LX does have some reliability/durability problems. It has that pervasive sticky mirror problem. I know the LX is much loved in the astrophotography community.

@@richardt1792 the sticking mirror is a minor easy fix, it’s the electronics that can fail, if they do the camera becomes a door stop, but it’s something that does not happen on a regular basis, the later models from what I have read never suffered from electrical failure as Pentax over the years addressed that problem to some extent

@@martinhensonphotography The LX is a great camera paired with a fantastic camera system. I have 6 of them. I would place it as my second favorite SLR. My favorite is the F-1 though. Despite its weight, I prefer the F-1 when I am hiking through the Sierras. For a grip, I use the Canon motor drive system which adds quite a bit to the heft.

I bought my first F1 at Eastern Camera in 1974 The sales rep was at the store with a demo camera. He gave me the camera and a roll of Kodak Plus X and we walked around the Long Island Rail Road station shooting anything that caught my eye. I took the film home and developed it. I made a contact sheet and called him the next day. Joe came over with the camera and 55mm f1.2 lens. Somewhere I still have the paperwork for the sale. $595 including tax. I still have the camera and 5 more with an array of lenses and motors. This April that camera body and lens with be 50 years old. I bought them for my 18th birthday.

There is an alternative on digital world with Fujifilm and their film simulation feature. I had some great shot that trick people though I used a film camera. Fujifilm film simulation is not gimmick.

By the time the F-1 was introduced, I was already heavily invested in the Nikon F system. I liked the Canon, but was not about to change systems, so I did the only logical thing: I bought an F-1 along with several lenses , put them in a separate bag and carried on! Along with my Nikons, I still have and use the Canon.

Peter Parker used a Canon new F-1 (2:35), not a Canon F-1. I preferred the new F-1 because it has F-Stop number & Shutter speed showing in the viewfinder. Also loved the ATG's Rolleiflex 3003

Je possède un Canon A1 que j’utilise de temps en temps et que j’adore. Je n’ai jamais utilisé le F1 bien que j’en ai énormément entendu parler. Ce F1 me rappelle fortement le Nikon F3 que j’utilise également souvent avec son viewfinder et son verre de visée interchangeables. Je dirais que ces appareils sont sensuels, je retrouve ce type de sensations avec mon boitier Fuji XT4 dont l’ergonomie reste dans le même état d’esprit.

The best workaround for the banned 1.35V mercury cell battery is the MR-9 battery voltage converter adapter. It is rather expensive but it is 100% worth it. I tried all different hearing aid batteries and even the Wein Cell battery in the past and they only last for a couple of months. They're all Zinc air activated and so they lose their charge slowly after activation to air. The MR-9 contains a voltage reducing micro circuit that takes an available normal alkaline 1.5V battery and converts it into the proper 1.35V needed for older CdS light meters. I get perfectly exposed images on my Canon F-1 and the MR-9 battery combination lasts for years.

@@16jigabytes28 The main difference is the operation of the internal light meter. In the New F-1, it is powered by an readily attainable battery. The older F-1 requires the banned 1.35v Mercury battery which would require further modifications or costs to get a meter correct reading.

ça depend de ton budget, le F-1 coute cher, si tu préfère commencer avec un plus petit budget, un Canon Ae-1 sera plus facile a trouver
