How idioms translate differently in other languages. In English you say "On cloud nine" but in Dutch it is "in de zevende hemel" (in the seventh heaven) and there are many more across multiple languages.

I don't know if this is a good suggestion, but, why are some cities, like Berlin or Paris the same in English (minus some pronunciation changes) as in the other language? Unlike Vienna being Wein in Austria.

I remember as a child in the 70’s (yes, I’m old) being confused that Cape Kennedy and Cape Canaveral were the same thing but the Kennedy Space Center was not also the Canaveral Space Center.

Same here, except not a 70's kid. I could not figure out why rockets were launched from a different place for a period of time. I unconsciously concluded that either Cape Canaveral was going through a major overhaul or NASA was developping a fallback site that was later abandoned...

1:53 the "fun story" is, sadly, not true. "Cañaveral" (with that thing above the "n" changing its pronunciation) means literally "reed field" or "cane field" (as in cane the plants from the genera _Arundo,_ and _Arundinaria,_ as well as the sugar cane). The issue comes because the word for "reed" used to make the word is "cañavera" (lit. "true cane"), which some English speaker must have misheard as "cane bearer".

Cape Canaveral is split into two parts: Kennedy Space Center, and Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. Also, president Johnson got the space center in Houston named after him.

That 2 names thing is fairly common the US. In 1975 the State of Alaska changed the name of Mount McKinley(the tallest mountain in North America) to Denali, but the Federal Government didn't change its name until 40 years later in 2015. There are other examples, but that's the other one that popped into my head. Well there's also the Hoover Dam-Boulder Dam thing, but that was the Federal Government fighting with itself over a name.

I was always under the impression that Hoover Dam/Boulder Dam was basically Roosevelt being Roosevelt. I was born in 1964 and as far as I was concerned Kennedy Space Center at Cape Canaveral was entirely sufficient honoring of JFK and making it Cape Kennedy always seemed a bit extra.

Different places. Merritt Island is across the Bannana River from the Cape. Most of the actual Space Center infrastructure is on the Island, but it gets ignored in favor of the Cape.

You should also do a video about the Russian spaceport (which is actually in Kazakhstan), the Baikonur Cosmodrome. It was named after a town 300 Km away, in order to hide its true location. Eventually, though, the nearby town changed its name to Baikonur in 1995. It really shows the difference between the countries. The US launch site is a big tourist attraction, while the Soviet one was top secret.

Yeah, even if the citie name has an umlaut, like München or Köln, they aren't called Munchen and Koln but Munich and Cologne. On the other side: I would find it interesting, how englishspeakers would pronounce names like Arzen and Uelzen with a name pronounced with umlaut but not spelled with one.

"Why is it Cape anything when there's no cape?" "Shut up and stop making sense." (There MAY be a Springfield on a cape, but the ones that immediately come to mind aren't ... except for the one in the Simpsons, which has an ocean harbor and therefore might be.)

There is a place in the world where places have different names depending on where you are in the country - Belgium. Many cities have a Flemish and Wallonian name and the road signs switch depending on where you are. For example when driving to Liege the signs say Luik until yo cross the "border". Some names are similar but some like Mons/Bergen can really be confusing

I was barely conscious in 1963; I wasn't even aware of the assassination, though I do remember being very upset that I couldn't watch cartoons on TV because my mom wanted to watch some really boring news show (ahem, a funeral). (I was 3 years old.) So I grew up in the "Cape Kennedy" era and it stayed that way throughout the Apollo space program, which I was riveted to for years. I don't remember ever hearing about a name-change controversy but at some point later, it penetrated my consciousness that the cape was now called by its former name, Cape Canaveral, and I was always confused by that and why it had changed. "Kennedy" just always seemed like the natural name to me. Glad to have these details filled in!

Before Cape Canaveral was used for rocket launches, Wallops Island, VA was (and still is) used as well as White Sands, NM.

Re your request about places having different names on a local/national level, you should exclude countries with more than one official language or with regional languages... also, the local name in question must have some official status and not be a nickname. I guess this orients the search on countries with local legislative/normative bodies, a.k.a, a federal state. So, a federal state with only one official language: the USA, Germany, Austria, Brazil, Australia, Argentina (Canada is out because of Québec, Mexico has official local languages). Maybe some others I forgot. In fact, even the USA and Australia should technically not pass the bar, because English is only a de facto official language, not de jure... That narrows it down.

My family's home town of Brugge, and Bruges in Belgium has two names. Ironically the Dutch/Flemish use the French pronounciation, and French use the Dutch. 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

That's kinda cheating since they have two languages. Almost any Belgian city qualifies: Bruxelles/Brüssel, Anvers/Antwerpen, Gand/Gent (with bonus points for the strong difference on pronounciation)... The most funny one, but not in Belgium, is Lille/Rijsel; because there is also a "Lille" in Flanders.

Cape Town, South Africa is named after the Cape of Good Hope. That's not confusing. 😂 In all seriousness, I wish that my native South Africa had as big a seperation between local an national government as the USA. For example, my home town of Port Elizabeth was renamed Gqeberha by the National government, despite the fact that the local city Council was opposed to the name change and nobody called the city by that name. Afrikaans people call it Die Baai and Xhosa people call it iBhayi. The new name is starting to be used more often, and residents are now as likely to call the city GQ as opposed to PE.

This might seem a little bit random for a video recommendation, but could you talk about the creative, funny names from the Wicked Universe. You could discuss Elphaba’s and G(a)Linda’s name origins along with the Emerald City (although, that one’s prob obvious). But there are soooo many cool names on the Map of Oz, it’s so interesting! Idk I think it’ll be a fun video to research! 💚💓

I suppose you could do geographical features known by different names in different countries, like Rio Grande (US) vs Rio Bravo (Mexico), both of which are titles of John Wayne movies. Of course, sometimes this leads to unpleasantness, such as when Argentina renamed some islands Las Islas Malvinas...

Which makes sense as Arabia still exists as a location but Persia as a location hasn't since 1935 when the name was changed to Iran.

"Växjö", it's in Sweden, the south, literally "The road by the lake" (Vägen vid sjön, spelling was invented by clever people a bit later). What do you think the lake is called? No, it's called "Växjö Lake" (The road by the lake lake). Logic was invented later as well. "Pungpinan" (The scrotum pain, in todays language) is another fine Swedish name. But back in the day it was just a place where you had to pay money. From the "pouch". I see what they did there... Trust me, there are more names that will make you think that Sweden is a place of idiots/mad people/idiots, and you won't be wrong. You have to love the people who did the naming (unless it's named after kings or stuff like that, that's just boring and going the easy way. They renamed "Kräkångersnoret", and that was a shame. It had it all! At least they kept "Mensträsk").
