Kind of a sideline observation here, but in the 1982 film, "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" there is a scene in which one of the primary characters, Jeff Spicoli, gets a pizza delivered to him during a U.S. history class. The historical event that the class is supposedly learning about, when this pizza incident is happening, is the "Platt Amendment." This is acknowledged first via the class teacher, (Mr. Hand,) mentioning "A piece of legislation, known as the 'Platt Amendment'...," as well as Jeff Spicoli informing Mr. Hand (after receiving his pizza) that he's (Spicoli) "Having some food and learning about Cuba." I just thought this to be an interesting bit of trivia now that I know exactly what the a ledged lesson was that was being taught in the movie scene.

Cuba has one of the highest life expectancies in the Americas (higher than the US, by the way). Furthermore, until the pandemic, Cuba had a higher human development index than countries like Colombia, Brazil, Mexico or Ecuador, being only behind Chile, Uruguay and Costa Rica. In other words, Cuba has had a better quality of life than these from 1959 to 2021 {and even after the impact of COVID it is still higher than the Latin American average). Cuba certainly has problems, yes, but most of them have to do with the US blockade that is suffocating it economically.

Why Then Most People In Cuba Flee To The United States Especially Florida? Life In Cuba Can Be Great For Those At The Top But It Is Also Bad For Those In The Bottom
@AlToca3820 күн бұрын
@@CKNICKERBOCKERS Because there is a much better quality of life in Florida than in Cuba, obviously. But Mexicans, Argentinians, Hondurans, Chinese, Iranians and even Spaniards also go to the US to improve their quality of life. The question is: 1) The quality of life (HDI) in Cuba has been better than in latam except for chile, uruguay, argentina and costa rica until COVID-19 and various typhoons that have destroyed their income. Yet Cuba is still in the middle of the table, not at the bottom. 2) Why is the quality of life in Cuba so bad in material terms (infrastructure, energy or goods like cars are bad)? Of course it has to do with the corruption and inequality of the regime, but above all, the main factor is the US embargo and sanctions on the island. All the UN except the US and Israel vote every year to end the blockade, but as the US is a member of the Security Council it is not approved. Think that no international company can do business with Cuba without suffering US blockades and sanctions. Even European Union companies that have done business with Cuba have subsequently suffered sanctions and fines from the US xd. It is ridiculous to look at the tree and not see the forest just as it is ridiculous to blame only Cuba for its misery and not the sanctions and illegal embargoes that the US applies because of its colonial mentality as it wants Cuba to return to being its casino, headquarters of mafias and prostitution networks as it was pre-1959.

@@AlToca38dude, he only sympathized with the Cubans. Since both Cubans and Filipinos experienced the same thing in the past. Philippines and Cuba is pretty much parallel events at one point. Our ancestors both fought the Americans and the Spanish in the past. Like Cuba, Philippines also suffered American colonization. In fact Philippines was fully annexed by the US. We only got away from the US because the US congress became anti-imperialists in 1930s. They agreed to let us go. While Cuba was not spared. Also you are making an unfair comparison. Philippines has a huge population compare to Cuba. We have more access to food and other services. That cause our population to grow more than 10 times. While Cuba barely grow in population for obvious reasons life is hard. the reason why the Philippines has lower per capita and hdi were mostly because majority of the population in the Philippines are kids. Philippines have a population boom due to improvment in quality of life in the 1950s to 1980s. Plus the Catholic church trying to stop any legislation that would favor contraception and abortion. You have to divide the population in different ages to see the actual picture. Philippines is just a younger nation by population but wait till those kids enter the labor market after 15 years. Cuba is suffering compare to the Philippines which is enjoying good economic growth above the average growth of the emerging economy. This is because younger generation of Filipinos are more educated now about family planning, they usually prioritize careers now and that contributes to recent growth spikes which which exceeds IMF's exceptions. so im not really that negative about the Philippines future but Cuba is different US imperialism still want to control the Cubans till now plus their incompetent leaders make things even worse.
@AlToca3819 күн бұрын
@@iceteazen Hello, I appreciate your comment for its conceptual and argumentative precision. And it is true that the outlook seems to favour the Philippines in the future, as the 21st century is the century of the Rise of Asia with the Pacific being the new global trade axis. Moreover, the other factors you mentioned favour the Philippines over a stagnating Cuba. In any case, what I am pointing out is that right now there is a better quality of life in Cuba than in the Philippines. Cuba's GDP per capita: 9,499.57 (higher than Mexico's). GDP per capita Philippines: 3.725,55 HDI Cuba: 0.783 (73rd in the world) HDI Philippines: 0.699 (116th in the world) Life expectancy Cuba: 78 years Life expectancy Philippines: 71 years And yes, I understand that these data are influenced by the population pyramid, etc. but even so, it does not detract from the fact that Cuba has a better quality of life (despite its limitations) than the Philippines. This may not be the case in the future, as Trump and Marco Rubio want to bring down the government and will therefore carry out new sanctions and direct actions against the island, but I note that precisely because of the US interest in making Cuba a satellite state again, there is a false discourse about the terrible quality of life in Cuba, when although it is not as good as it should be (either because of the blockade or because of the corruption and inefficiency of the regime), it is better than it is usually presented on the internet.

The United States was never an unincorporated territory of the British. America was a colony, which is considered a large outpost. The Cubans benefits our self, evident considering their current situation, and your misunderstanding of territorial categorization is concerning. I'm convinced that Cuba needs to join Puerto Rico as an unincorporated territory. Once the cubans have modernized and stabilized, they can debate on weather. We have been good enough that they would like to join us, or if they are so different that they would like to regain autonomy and sovereignty. Several factual errors: - The Cubans did rebel in the previous years (Guerra grande, 1868-1878 and Guerra chica, 1879-1880) - Cuba was granted an autonomous government in 1898 (which was ignored by the US). - Also, the Cuban rebels were NOT close to winning the war in 1898. The American forces disembarked near Santiago because Havana, the capital city, was strongly in Spanish arms. - That's not the flag of Spain.

I doubt they feel saved in Cuba at the moment. Cuban Nationalism was replaced with Russian influence and communism. People love to talk about western imperialism but fail to mention how the world has worked throughout history. If the Americans had really wanted to they could have pulled a mongol style takeover and "removed" every rebel from Cuba. By right of conquest the US could have annexed Cuba but thankfully they didn't want the uglyness of killing so many innocents. Cubans had been subjugated by Spain and the US Allowed them independent just like Phillipines. Only for someone else to come around and take over.

@ianstobie16 күн бұрын
Russia had fought and lost the Crimean War in 1853 to 1856, which blocked Russia's expansion into the territories of the declining Ottoman empire. Britain and France had come to the aid of the Ottomans. Russia licked its wounds, made lots of military reforms and rethought its strategic priorities. The sale of Alaska to the US in 1867 was part of this process. During the Crimean War the British and French navies had briefly raided the Siberian coast. The new Russian thinking was that if Britain decided to move into Alaskan territory from Canada it wasn't worth trying to defend it. Selling it instead to the US would forestall this, and raise funds for what really mattered - another go at the Ottomans far to the west. This came in 1877. The settlement after the Crimean War had forced the Russians to remove their fleet from the Black Sea and pull back in the Balkans and Caucuses. Meanwhile revolts against Ottoman rule had broken out among many of Russia's Christian allies. Brutal repression made supporting the Ottomans again unpopular in Britain, and France was in no position to do so after recent severe defeat by Prussia. The so-called Russo-Turkish war of 1877 to 1878 was a major victory for Russia, and a major step towards independence for today's Bulgaria, Romania, Serbia and Greece, all former Ottoman possessions.
