Vlog 3 January 2024 | Current studies say that a mear 43% of Nicaragua in 2022 identifies in some way with Catholicism. If that's the indentifying numbers, imagine how few people are actually Catholic as people mean when they ask the question. Could it be as low as 20%? Why do people refer to Nicaragua as a Catholic country if the vast majority of the country isn't Catholic? Why do people portray Nicaragua as being so religious when, on the ground, it seems very secural?

Yes, but not the majority of the country. And constantly a decreasing amount, especially as people become more aware that it is a mark of oppression and colonization, not a religious tool and even those that brought it here didn't believe in it. It was a tool of war, not a belief.

@ibrahimmoncada7214 The US feels dramatically more religious. In Nicaragua there is a lot of religious holidays, processions... pomp and circumstance. But it seems like almost no one practicing. It's the "cultural" aspects you see everywhere, not the religious ones. And that's why so many churches have gotten in trouble here, at least officially, because they were acting as foreign national agents and not at all as religious positions. In the US where the culture of religion is far less, the religious aspects of society are far more visible. The degree to which Nicaragua looks and feels (and the locals describe it) as being not very religious is noticeable compared to places like the US where people say it isn't religious, but absolutely everything is driven by religion including "imperial cults" where they worship the government or government officials (for real, just like how early Catholics worshiped the emperor of Rome and such.) That literally still happens in America.

According to some random unofficial chart I found, Nicaragua is a midling nation... 75th most religious generally in the world. But, again, everyone has their own definition of what it means to be religious. There's no actual way to know. It's not only that a person's individual beliefs rely on faith, but what other's claim to be their religion must be taken on blind faith. You can't trust what someone says about their own religion. Or you can, but using nothing but blind faith; often with substantial evidence against it.

Perhaps some of the Reformation has arrived! When I lived in Nicaragua ( 70 years ago), the Moravians were hated by the Catholics, and were restricted to the N area of the Miskito's. The social divide was terrible/ THe Western Nicaraguans had the power.

Wow, 70 years ago! Yeah, I think time (and the removal of the American influence) has united much of Nicaraguan society. The divides of the past are mostly gone.

Catholics definitely have the prettiest churches. You never see a catholic church in a strip mall next to a convenience store 😁.

Religions have types, faith can't. Faith, by definition, has no description. Only the lack of faith has brands.

That's weird. Normally when people are getting deleted they are including links or email addresses. KZbin is pretty tight on their automated messaging controls.

You've had three posts that I've seen in the last 29 minutes are all visible here. They get to me late because my Internet keeps failing today (just me, not the region... it appears to be the line inside my house.)

I checked and KZbin doesn't have anything from you in any kind of "holding" for review. That happens sometimes when it is "questionable" but they can't determine if there was a violation. I only get a few a week like that though. None today.
