When Charley Pride started out, his producer was nervous about pushing a black artist to a mostly white country music fan base. In fact, when his record label sent out radio stations, no photo was included. Just a label that read "Country Charley Pride". His sister asked him why he was performing "their music", but his response was "It's my music, too." He talks about how he broke through in country music as a black artist to Dan Rather on The Big Interview.

He made a huge impact for sure. I've always been a huge fan of Charley Pride & his music too. Watching him on tv my whole life, you could tell that Charley was as anyone would call, A big loveable teddy bear. Meaning, he had a huge heart, & was the nicest person imaginable. He wouldn't hurt a fly. He'll always be known as being 1 of the greatest singers & entertainers of all time, & will always be on my favorites list too. He was a one of a kind, & made history just by being himself. A lifelong fan of his always. :)

Arguably country music’s greatest star to date. So many wonderful tracks reflecting on life in the rural US. I’m sorry but if people have a problem with black guys being country then that’s their problem. Pride remains legendary in rural America and his songs will forever be cherished

I would feel a little out of place being Asian American and enjoying the heck out of the white people's country music. I grew up in Texas and was exposed to country music in the 90s from my parents, my camp counselor played country music and I picked it up. Really, YOU DONT HAVE TO BE WHITE to enjoy country music. White men chase and court my women all the time do I tell him he needs to be Asian to marry my women? absolutely not! Neither does he tell me to be like him when I pursue his woman.
