China genuinely scares me. I'm an Australian too and the number of Chinese 'spies' as it were in our Universities just as students is insane. It's not even a conspiracy theory China asking their own to spy on other nations is treated like completing your yearly taxes. One student at UNSW went to a Pro Hong Kong rally and the next week his family members back in China were contacted and intimidated so as to persuade this student to not take part. Basically saying 'we can't touch you but we can get your family.' It's such a shame too because I've had plenty of Chinese friends in my life, even dated Chinese girls, so have my friends it's very common here in Australia, but this current Chinese government is tyrannical.

This hit way closer to home than I expected. A "certain" Chinese company (huge one, more than well-known in the West) tried to pursuade a family member of mine to do exactly what is being brought up in the video. They were flown out from my country of residence to a completely different one where the meeting took place. They were offered 1 million USD up front if they were to accept. My family member declined and just left immediately, but was asked by the people they met to "consider it". They didn't have to consider anything, it was an open and shut case in their eyes. This must have been close to 10 years ago now...

I worked in a tech hardware company in Silicon Valley in the early 2000s. Around 2007'ish, out of the blue, our company announced that anybody with Chinese work VISA, non-citizen employees, were locked out of key company servers that held designs and many other key IP technology. This was shocking back then to hear. Specific employees, not contractors, actual employees, were got restrictions based on the country they were from... I had already seen the flagrant IP theft, first hand in the late 1990s, early 2000s. This was no surprise to me. It's obvious that many with poor security, never picked up on their own internal theft, because IP theft continued with other companies for >10yrs still. When Trump announced the ban of Huawei, it was a no-brainer for me. Them and 100s to 1000s of others should have been banned >20yrs ago.

@noodleknight79243 жыл бұрын
@@SKWest27 The average tax payer in the US is filthy rich compared to that in China. The countries you mentioned all got a lot of western aid back then to help them establish their modern economy and weren't as behind as China was at the time to begin with, and also weren't struggling with as severe issues. Not saying the CCP didn't also cause a lot of China's issues and I'm not trying to defend them in general, I just don't think people have a good view on the current "morals" of intellectual property laws. Competition motivates innovation, sure, which is why intellectual property laws can be useful, but competition doesn't work between heavily uneven sides that don't even have a chance of catching up without help (that never comes due to how these IP laws currently work). If it wasn't for china's bootleg /copycat industry that it used as a setpping stone then the country might have never moved out of absolute poverty. What caused a minor inconvenience for westerners (mainly in terms of some revenue loss) meant A LOT for the country hosting 1/5 of the world's population. You can also use the very few Asian tech giants as your examples, while ignoring the dozens upon dozens of still poor countries in asia and africa that aren't close to even China's level and aren't looking like this will change anytime soon. All of which would greatly benefit if they could produce modern, not out-dated properties themselves, instead of some western companies exclusivesly selling these to them. I'm not saying there should be absolutely no respect /laws for research and intellectual property ownership, but companies who already heavily overprofited on them shouldn't be able to hold onto them for infinity and should make them public domain after passing a ceratin operating income trashold. This wouldn't only help developing countries but would also help restoring competition in the west, as it is now a few giant companies are eating up their industries more and more.

And the first sign of trouble is when a country refuses to reciprocate our generosity, in effect helping themselves to all the fruits of Western labor but giving nothing back in return. In the past few decades we've seen a massive transfer of technology and know-how from the West to China. I have nothing against such a transfer, since thanks to similar knowledge transfers in the past, countries like Japan, Taiwan and South Korea were able to transform themselves from poor, backwards third-world countries to modern and prosperous industrial democracies on the cutting edge of the world's most advance technologies. China, on the other hand, shows no indication or intention of joining this club of modern, wealthy democracies. Somewhat related, I took a hiatus from my career in TV and did the university teacher thing in China back in 2018. Pretty soon, Chinese people were always asking me to show up at this event or that event, because they take pictures and use your Western face as advertising. One day a WeChat message comes in. Says they're a friend of a friend. Got a formal party that coming Friday, need a Westerner there. My thoughts were, 'I got nothing going on, and free booze sounds good.' They call me a day or two later to confirm, tell me to suit up, and then on Friday afternoon pick me up. On the way there, they're like, 'Okay, your name is Dave Schelling.' What? That's not my name. 'No, that's who you're standing in for. He couldn't make it.' We end up at a major medical facility where surgical procedures are being held all the time. A woman greets us, one of the top administrators. And she's like 'Hi, Dave! Glad you could make it!' Suddenly I'm surrounded by staff who usher me into the building. We walk through this hallway and that, stop by an empty room. The lady-administrator gestures to what resembles a dental office. I'm like, 'Very nice.' She points to the machine. 'That's your machine! Your invention!' Oh! Why, yes it is. By then I'm freaking out internally. If I cough up the truth about this obvious scam those two guys who called me were running, I'd be thrown in jail. Innocence be damned. This is China. So I play along. 'Wanna see a surgery that's going on right now?' the administrator asks me. I tell them maybe another day. (Blood makes me faint. No lie.) We're back outside. The jerks who brought me there were taking tons of pictures of me. Turns out they run a manufacturing plant in Guangzhou and were looking to score a contract tied to this hospital. Using me as an imposter to show they had big ties with an American medical parts company in California. It's all coming together and this is what standing in quicksand feels like. Which is to say, it's what living in China feels like. Icing on the cake, the tip-top administrator for this place shows up. Cranky old Chinese guy in a business suit, barely looks at me when he shakes my hand. He and I are told to stand at the front corner of the building to do an unveiling -- red ribbons and cloth over a brass plaque. They give the cue, we pull the ribbons. I see the plaque, words commemorating this facility as the biggest something or other, proudly tied to the medical machines "my company" created. The tip-top administrator stands for a few pics and leaves. The lady administrator jabbers on with me in perfect English about life back in the U.S., living in California, then is like, 'let's grab dinner tonight.' The two scam artists who brought me there grabbed me by the arm and told her I had to catch a flight. Ten minutes later I'm standing next to the university campus where I work and live, about six hundred RMB in my pocket. Those two scam artists are gone. Never heard from them again. I told this story to a lot of Westerners I met over in China. Shockingly, many had similar experiences.

While this seems overly generous, academic runs on the idea that sharing research prevents work from getting duplicated and everyone benefits. The problem, as Winston clearly outlined, arises when folk lie about their affiliations.

The problem is the lack of vigilance on part of the Australian universities and a even bigger problem is Australian universities rely heavily on full fee paying international students as their lucrative source of income.

Actually seeing a bunch of cases coming from the NIH all at once may not be such a bad thing, yes it means that there are problems but it also means the problems are being found. You see the dirt out in the open when you clean things up. Also such a series of scandals normally what is needed for actual security and policy improvements since they can't blow it off as a "bad apple", freak event, or some such and so fixes are at least attempted vs allowing the problems to fester. . . also other departments will see the flak the NIH very rightly is catching for this and self interested bureaucrats will want to avoid that in their own little box.
@bluehotdog26103 жыл бұрын
Yeah, most other departments in the US government took the issue of spying seriously years ago. I have heard Chinese-Americans who have perfectly clean records and background get rejected from a security clearance solely because they have family members in China. Most government agencies involved in defense do take this stuff seriously.
@LostSnipeHunter3 жыл бұрын
@@bluehotdog2610 Defense sure, probably State too, but how about Dept of the Interior? How about Commerce or Treasury with all the spinning door consultants and appointee's going back and forth with the businesses and banks that have been crawling up Beijing's behind for the last 25 years? This is a sign that actually caring about and taking action against this behavior is spreading out from it's core into secondary and dual use stuff that is less obvious. . . I doubt many of these NIH contracts needed clearance or the like and so they have probably not been as focused on.
@haroldhahn70443 жыл бұрын

In many ways the CCP unintentionally act as a buffer between a hostile Western world and the Chinese people. Think about it, if China does become democratic, which I do believe will occur someday, many people who scorn the CCP today will scorn the Chinese people tomorrow. And the reason is simple, many Westerners simply cannot accept a non-western nation as a technological leader. It’s that simple. And will vilify the country as it climbs the technological ladder. But for now, the CCP is the target. And not the Chinese people.
@stevewilson52923 жыл бұрын
@@taishanburgermeister8522 Mmmh, I dunno. "A hostile [towards Chinese people themselves] Western world" ? I don't think there is much evidence of that...you certainly don't provide any examples. Then you state "many Westerners simple cannot accept a non-western nation as a technological leader", again without supporting your claim. In any event "accepting" would be neither here nor there if it actually happened....but it hasn't. Japan came close with consumer electronics and automobiles in the late 20th century and Japanese products were (and still are) well accepted. Japanese quality management techniques were widely studied and accepted. Chinese technology has been largely derivative...it's not a guarantee that the Chinese will ever become real innovators.
@taishanburgermeister85223 жыл бұрын
@@stevewilson5292 Well, many of the supporting comments towards everything Winston says is evidence of a negative view towards China. But it is masked in an opposition to the CCP. He does mix in criticizism of China and the Chinese people while criticizing the CCP. As far as China being a technological leader, well, you’re right, they aren’t there yet. However I’m not going by my own research when it comes to whether China will be a technological leader. I’m going by the heads of tech companies that talk about China potentially getting there. And I am sure you have seen many of statements. So I’m just going by what they say. Am I wrong in doing so?

I live in Germany we had an incident like that at my workplace, a chinese company approached our company to produce specific medical equipment. My company produces medical related stuff such as antibacterial walls, walls with special coating so cleaning them is much smoother and easier you know. Anyway they tried to get a contract with us producing their medical gear (my company does sell these over the world our biggest contractors is Dubai) but they asked us to show the production way, so they would send us someone overseeing and "learn" from us. So yeah these chinese people tried to get our blueprints about how we do our products, it was a huge deal but in the end it would lead them in copying our production way which could damage our own sales. At least that what I have been hearing from my teamleader, coz we were already preparing our production line in order to expand for a new contract with these chinese and suddenly we should stop doing so. I didn't think much about it knowing that chinese are known for copying all the stuff we do in the west only to produce it cheaper over there. And at least I get the feeling alot of companies are already content with cooperating with them accepting their money.
@bighands693 жыл бұрын
What this demonstrates is that Chinese culture is not good at developing or being creative. What they are good at is copying. For the next decade or two the west will stay ahead but after that who really knows. I suspect China will be doing this to build their own economy for internal trade.

If it were up to me though, I’d emigrate 200 million Chinese people into our country tomorrow, thereby making my own WASP race a minority (which is feels like anyway), just because, most ABC’s tend to succeed very well into the upper-middle class where most of us WASP’s are at home, and also are quiet people. Hopefully most people remind themselves that these cheaters are an extreme minority, because even when China’s gross net economy surpasses that of the U.S.’s, their population is still four times ours and the majority of Chinese know very well that the “math is against them,” and they’re better off here.

If they have no family in China, then they "should" be safe. The one-child policy for years, has given them a hostage/blackmail tool to motivate Chinese who are good people, but are forced to do as the CCP want due to threats on family in the mainland. Here in New Zealand Jacinda’s government has been weeding Chinese spies out of parliament, which the previous government had refused to deal with. There were Chinese MP’s from both major political parties that got removed Parliament for National security interests by her government a few years ago. One of these politicians was publicly known for many years to have trained Government spies when in China. We also had a scandal involving the party that led the previous government receiving undisclosed political donations from a Chinese businessman, with ties to the CCP. Our current government has since banned all foreign political donations, and passed laws to prevent all foreigners who are not residents or citizens buying property in NZ.
