Islam first came to the Malay Peninsular in Terengganu around 1300. It must have come from Mainland China through Indo China. Zheng He (or Cheng Ho as some book name him) visited Malacca around 1450...after Islam has spread and accepted in the Peninsular. Islam also has reached the Southeast Asia archipelago including Philippines and Indonesia before the millennium. Traders from Middle East and Bengal who came to the region later in 1500 intensified the teaching of Islam. Zheng He's contributions in shaping the region thru religion and culture were tales of a legend.

he just stopped by and traded. He never conquered/colonized Southeast Asia. So please stop China's claim to the South China Sea (Indonesia's Natuna Sea). If you want to claim who was earlier, since thousands of years ago Indonesia's ancestors were the rulers of the sea. South China, because actually Indonesia's ancestors were sailors. Look at the Indonesian Bajau tribe (ancient fish people who still remain today)
