I just want to point out the Chinese student wrote faster than the American student and also relied on gimmicky tricks that don't apply under all circumstances, so while she completed the problem faster, it does not mean at all that she is a better student. The American student actually broke down the problem logically and understood it from the inside out before solving it, which is a method that when applied to other problems of a different nature does not leave her unprepared.

I am Chinese but I can tell you that we don't even know this method.We are good at calculating because Chinese language has an advantage in numbers' pronunciation,and all Chinese primary students should recite 九九乘法表 ,which can enable you to work out the simple calculations very fast.🤘🏼

I used to do in college when I stopped caring about carrying around a calculator at all times- at that point, the professors only cared about the steps taken to arrive at the final answer.... Only an occasional DK would deduct for miscalculated values!!!! Actually, I found that this method is faster/more efficient as the numbers increase, for decimals, and I've come up with "my own" slick methods for fractions and powers haha!!!!

Welcome to “Common Core” math. I had to look up KZbin videos last year to help my 2nd grader with her math. Common core is asinine! Instead of learning/memorizing the multiplication table they have MULTIPLE STEPS just to get the answers for the basics questions like 2+6=8 or 9x3=27. If they didn’t have to show their work, I’d just teach her the methods that have been around for centuries and work quite well.

The chinese won't even be able to do (39*58) using this gimmick, let alone fast BUT the american girl can AND WILL do that calculation much faster.

Many children learn how to break down large numbers on their own in multiplication. This is literally head math, except on a board. My process: 12*12 = 144, 2*12 = 24, 144 + 24 = 168

@@Thunder_God_Eneru 😗 there were times I counted the numbers as much as the number they are multiplied by, with head, with fingers, with pencil and paper (spreading numbers like cream on flatbread sandwich) and ending up getting headaches instead of a final answer so I used calculator.... YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA 😗14 × 12 = 2×4 = 8 2×10 = 20 10 × 4= 40 10 × 10 = 100 8+20=28+40=68+100=[168]

FOIL works for this problem. (10+2)(10+4) The F will always give you the 100 The L will give you the 8 And the O & I will give you the tens place: 40 + 20 = 60

Actually, in this equation the student on the left understood how to break the numbers down and lay out the problem so all pieces are on the board. Student on the right did a flashy equation that won't work in most situations - and cannot be applied to other methods with different number sets/expectations.

Is joke about common core. Traditional method:120+48=168 Common core method as imagined by educators: 10 4 10[ 100 40] 2. [ 20 8] This adds up to to 168. (This is actually more or less what the "Chinese" kid is doing). Common core according to parents: Draw a 12×14 grid of highly detailed elephants. Count the elephants. I will grade you on the quality of your elephants, not te answer.

My kid with a common core math background would do 12x12 in his head and 2x12 and just write 168 before any of the two would pick up a piece of chalk. Or in his head do 10x14=140 and 2x14=28 = 168. CCM when understood helps compute problems quickly before picking up a pencil.

12*14 1*1=1 2+4=6 2*4=8 168 Trick I always use. Multiple first digits 1 from 12 and 1 from 14 1 × 1 = 1 (first digit) Multiple each numbers each letter and add them 12 -> 1× 2 = 2 14 -> 1 × 4 = 4 2 + 4 = 6 (second digit) Multiple last digits 2 from 12 and 4 from 14 2 × 4 = 8 (third digit) Write the digits in order First digit, second digit, third digit 168 Note: This trick only works if you have two numbers that either starts with or ends with the same number Eg. 12 and 14 25 and 27 14 and 64 23 and 33 This trick was found and confirmed proudly by me. Im too lazy to explain why and how this works. FYI there's not much going here. Easy to understand

The Chinese student put the same answer on the second and third equation,which is wrong because on the second equation the answer is 8 and not 6. Overall the American student tackle it in an understanding way even though it took time but it’s worth it which shows that she knows the basics of solving problems like this.

The Chinese method is high context solution. It is similar to how they do calculation in an abacus. The American method is low context solution, but appropriate for academics.

12x14 (12x10=120) (12x4=28) (120+28=148) Yes i am American... i use pull down on multiplication... pull down can be odd because you use the half way mark or the x5 sometimes...... 48 x 79 (48x7... 7x5 35-7 (5+2=7) 30-2=28... 7x8 8+2=10.. 7x10 - 7x2... 70 - 14= 56... 280+56=336 "8+2=10... 5-2=3") 3360 + (48 x 9... 9x5=45.... 45-9... 9-5=4... 40-4=36... 360+(8x9... 9x10=90... 8+2=10... 9x2=18... 90-18.... 80.. 72)... 360+72... 432 + 3360 = 3792 Please don't criticize me for how I do multiplication... I am dyslexic and I need to find ways to speed up the process for me... even if it's doing alot of random stuff... and yes... pull down is weird on how it work... I count up instead of counting down sometimes...... take 8-5 for an example.... it's 3 obvious.. but did you count up or count down... you see if you go 5... then 6 7 8... you get 3 from 6 7 and 8 "counting up"... it's weird but it's how I do subtraction most of the time... I do even use it in multiplication but I use the 5 and 10 mark for numbers 5x or 10x as a medium... still... don't judge me... it's how I work
