The Mayans lived in the southeastern region of Mesoamerica, primarily in what is now modern-day Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador. The heartland of the Maya civilization was the Yucatán Peninsula, which includes present-day areas of Mexico such as the Mexican states of Yucatán, Quintana Roo, and Campeche. The ancient Maya civilization thrived from around 2000 BC to about 1500 AD, with its peak during the Classic Period from about 250 AD to 900 AD. The Maya civilization was known for its advanced architecture, mathematics, astronomy, hieroglyphic writing, and complex city-states.

“Docu” made for US Americans with little to no knowledge about geography. Mayan’s lived on the Yukatan peninsula, today Mexico. And the Aztec were in fact the chocolate crazed (origin of the word chocolate = Xocolatl) - when the Spaniards came to todays Mexico and brought chocolate and so many other fruits and vegetables (potatoes, tomatoes, paprika, etc.) to the old world. Only in 1876 the chocolate tree was introduced successfully into Africa, that is 380 years after it was first discovered in the Americas by the Spaniards.

I honestly thought this was a joke video at first. The Mayans didn't live in Africa. They were a Central American culture. And caco beans came from the Amazon Rainforest in South America. A quick google search shows they were first domesticated around 5,300 years ago before being introduced in Central America by the Olmecs around 4,000 years ago. The Maya did use it but they had nothing to do with it being grown in Africa. It was much later that the Spanyards took it to Africa where much of the crop is grown today.

In response to your last sentence: Does your 8 year old niece know about the Ibibios? or Ekpo? The thing is, knowledge has nothing to do with common sense. But we always see a lack of information as a show of low IQ. I have never heard about the Mayans. Never. This is my first time. But I am smart as shit. I only pay attention to what I find useful to my own life's journey. "Our journey brings us all the way to Africa, previously home to the Mayans..." Honestly, it was very hard to keep on watching after such a monumental slip. I don't wanna be a hater; but if you're making a documentary about chocolate, I believe spending a few extra seconds on Google to see where Mayans were from and where chocolate originally comes from is *very* important. 1. Mayans, like the chocolate tree, comes from America. Specifically the center, on the Yucatán Peninsula. 2. Mayans weren't the first to discover the secrets of the cacao tree. Those were the Olmecs, thousands of years before the Mayans. 3. It was brought to Africa by the colonial powers much later on. But by then, the Mayans were long extinct.

Excuse me? The Mayans lived in Africa? And these African Mayans - who seem to have teleported there from South America - discovered the secrets of the cacao tree? Those ancient Mayans also look suspiciously like modern-day Ghanaians. And then, at around 2.23 into the video, the African Ghanaians turn into Costa Ricans. Thankfully, the rest of the video appears to be relatively accurate. But really, getting the geography and history so completely wrong is nothing but laziness.

This is from the same source you posted ------ The cacao tree is native to the Amazon rainforest. It was first domesticated at least 5,300 years ago, in equatorial South America from the Santa Ana-La Florida (SALF) site in what is present-day southeast Ecuador (Zamora-Chinchipe Province) by the Mayo-Chinchipe culture, before being introduced in Mesoamerica. More than 4,000 years ago, it was consumed by pre-Hispanic cultures along the Yucatán, including the Maya, and as far back as Olmeca civilization in spiritual ceremonies. It also grows in the foothills of the Andes in the Amazon and Orinoco basins of South America, in Colombia and Venezuela. Wild cacao still grows there.

@Factora_eng Mayans in Africa? Never heard that before. How did they cross to South America? And why? It makes no sense. Why did the Mayans have straight hair and were lighter skin? If Australian aborigines still have wooly hair, how did the hair of mayans straighten? It makes no sense. Why and how they cross such a huge ocean? You don't go yo the beach and say "we have so much land and resources here, let's sail across the sea", an ocean in fact. And not be anxious that there is any land on the other side. I'm confused.

The MAYANS DIDNT LIVE IN AFRICA!!! Geeez, come on... They lived in Central America, predominantly the Yucatan peninsula, they were descendants of the Olmec people (most likely) and share mitochondrial DNA with other Native American populations including the DNA of the Inupiat people of Alaska thus proving they were decendants of Native Americans who emigrated across the Bering Sea land-bridge along with all other Native American populations. Sure, the Maya cultivated and traded cacao, but they didn't do ANYTHING in Africa. The Mayan people were EXTINCT long before the first Cacao tree was planted in Africa. The Portuguese planted the first Cacao trees on the island of San Thome (off French Gabon) around the year 1822. The Maya civilization began as long ago as 1000BC, flourished from 250AD-600AD, and had almost totally collapsed by 900 AD.... So... about A THOUSAND YEARS in between the two.

0:18 should have said that it's "virtually" available everywhere on the planet. Some cacao producing countries dont have access to the finished product (chocolate)

I am from Indonesia. There is plenty kakau plantations in my region. We are allowed to eat the white pulp as much as we want as long as we don't bring the kakau seeds home. They taste sweet and sour. Actually the kakau seed is so much bitter and inedible. When I was younger I didn't even know chocolate is made from this bitter and inedible kakau seed😂😂😂

Nice story. That’s why cocoa beans have to be fermented to bring out the taste. The bacteria and yeast produce lactic acid and acetic acid that buffer the alkaloids in the beans

Chocolate comes from South America not Africa. It is now grown in Africa. The Mayan also don't come from Africa again central America. This is bad info.

And the European/African countries had no such thing as Cacao until 1492 Christopher Columbus. Same story with potatoes, and few other foods. This video takes the prize for poorly researched as every basic history class covers this in the first days

The glaring "fact" this channel dropped the ball on. They lost a sub here because they obviously don't give a rats fanny about checking facts.
