I spent 8 months in Christchurch back in 1996. I was 22 at the time and pretty wild. I’m part Māori but it isn’t obvious so meeting the Christchurch skinheads wasn’t something that bothered me much. I got to know some of them and they were insanely violent, totally unhinged. They would often turn on each other and one would be left on the ground in a pool of blood. Auckland was my hometown, the skins never really took off there. Boot boys in the 80s was a small group of nobodies and in the 90s there was a small band of skins who looked like undernourished homeless people. Early 2000s unit 88 formed. Unit 88 didn’t last long, it was made up of middle class kids who weren’t prepared for the aggression that came their way from Maori and pacific island gangs. When these ethnic gang members turned up at unit 88s warehouse facility the young guys crumbled and disbanded.

This video really resonates with me. Perth, Western Australia, in the 80s and 90s wasn’t much different from what’s described here. I still remember being around 6 or 7 years old and having grown men yell insanely racist things at me from their cars before driving off. It was cowardly, vile, and truly the lowest of the low. Growing up racially Afro-Indian, my melanin naturally drew me to befriend Aboriginal kids because we faced similar treatment. We stood side by side, supporting each other through the discrimination we experienced. Then, in the 2000s, I saw a shift-people who got involved in gangs started emulating the West Coast gangster rap scene, trying to live out what they saw in media. Around that time, I took a different path and got into extreme metal bands like Dark Funeral, Deicide, and Cradle of Filth. I remember being in high school and having white kids who were fans of Tupac and Snoop Dogg question me, saying, “Why do you listen to that stuff? You’re Black.” It was frustrating to have my interests challenged because of stereotypes about my skin color. This video reminds me of how much these experiences shape us and the cultural layers that come with navigating racism and identity. Thank you for shedding light on this topic-these conversations are so important.

Growing up in Sth Auckland 80s 90s it was quite well known ChCh was pretty racist. Yeah we had skin heads in Auckland city but wasn’t much of a problem. South Auckland in the 80s and 90s had its own challenges, but yeah, Christchurch’s reputation for racism back then really stood out. The skinhead scene down south was on another level-definitely a tougher situation compared to what was happening up in Auckland. You’re right, though-racism isn’t confined to one place or group. It’s everywhere, and it takes many forms. NZ has its flaws, like anywhere, but it’ll always hold a special place for those of us who’ve called it home. Thanks for sharing, brother.

That was really interesting. I'm from Christchurch and used to see skinheads around but, always tried to avoid them. Their violence was absolutely unhinged and defied logic and was likely to kick off at any time, seemingly without provocation and, as you said, was often among themselves. I was overseas for a couple of decades and came back about the time skinhead squatters beat that poor landlord to death when he tried to evict them from his house. I remember how shocked everyone was and, you sort of didn’t hear much about them after that. I just figured the police had cracked down so much that they kind of gave up.
@Mr.BradRaven6 күн бұрын
Thanks for sharing your perspective-it’s always interesting to hear from someone who was in Christchurch during that time. The violence you describe really does match what a lot of people experienced-chaotic, unpredictable, and often self-destructive. That incident with the landlord was horrifying and definitely a turning point. You’re right; after that, it seemed like the skinhead scene went underground or fractured. Whether it was due to police crackdowns or just the culture evolving, they’ve definitely become less visible. It’s fascinating how subcultures like that rise and fall over time, often leaving a lasting impact on the communities they were part of

I am Māori from one of the most Māori towns in North Island called Kaitaia and lived in Christchurch from late 90's til 2004, I worked with a skinhead and we became good friends despite our obvious differences, the reason is because we actually took the time to get to know each other and took an interest in our backgrounds from a critical perspective not a confrontation way, we're still good mates til this day. Tbh I think racism is all over the country against Māori and has been that way since colonisation and the signing of the Tiriti (British killing Māori in war and theft of Māori land), our history was talked about in whispers back in my teens but now its openly discussed and I think that's a good thing. Memories of Christchurch in the 1990s flooding back. I was part of it and got drawn in because I chose to. I was an impressionable 17 turning 18 year old at the time. Of all places that caused it, I was at the infamous maori trade training hostle on Hansens Lane. I was considered too white to be a maori and got bullied by browner versions. (There were a couple of handfuls of "white maoris" there and it was obvious that we were going to form our own click). Made it through the year and left downright offensive comment in the farewell book. Correct about all the different groups of angry young men out there...especially after the local iwi won its massive claim. Unemployment or low paying jobs didn't help. I returned to Invercargill and joined in with Nick Wairau's group. Very rough times but the world marches on and as with age...l mellowed out. I don't understand racism. Why hate someone with a different skin colour? We all bleed red.
@Wezwolf11 күн бұрын
Sometimes different skin colour is an indication that you are from a different culture. Which means you may be inclined to behave a certain way or have certain beliefs or values which clash with another persons. So it is not necessarily hating someone simply because of the colour of their skin. Now whether or not you accept the negative aspects of a different culture, or reject them, is another issue. For most people this prejudice manifests itself in the form of simply thinking "I don't think I'll bother trying to be friends with that person, because I doubt we'd have much in common" - While other people, who are more criminally minded in general, may resort to lashing out against the person - Verbally or physically. The problem is more about the personality of the person who is holding the racist view.

I heard there was a lot of racism but the last 6 years living in Chch, I haven't seen much racism around. I did see a confederate flag in someone's Holden at first, some comments about Middle Eastern people just before 2020 but hardly think much of it as it was rare. It's a bit like Dorkland now. There isn't much far right at all. HOWEVER there seems to be a lot of far left Marxism, especially in the city.
@Mr.BradRaven10 күн бұрын
Its gone quite the last few years, specially after the mosque shootings, the far right came under heavy investigation and being seen in the public isnt the safest idea. And there is alot more tolerance after the shooting. But, there are the racists still there, just not active and alot of the low key racism I saw was from older generations, usually on FB.. the stomping ground for old racists.

That's surprising, considering the number of violent racist attacks and murders that happened between the mid-80s up the mid 2000s, all perpetrated by skinheads. It was definitely there, whether you were aware or exposed to it yourself or not doesn't mean it wasn't there. I saw and experienced alot of racism in Christchurch as have countless others. Wayne Motz, Hemi Hutley, Matiu Kuiti, Jae Hyeon Kim are just a few who experienced it and are no longer alive because of it.

He was a bouncer at the Gladstone for a while when it was 'punk' and I remember going there and him giving me shit for being straight lol! Sadly, he was stabbed to death 82, ironically by a sixteen year old. Cops sang the praises of the youth in court who got off for self defence BUT same youth was involved in the machete murder of a guy two years later! Mum and I supported the mother in court and we met the detective there who had been on my brothers murder trial and he came up and apologised to us that they had got it wrong with my brother being deemed the aggressor(cos of his tattoos/record) when he was stabbed! The kid stabbed my brother after he followed him back to his car and tapped him on the shoulder and as my brother turned around BOOM tipped his heart n lung, slowly bled to death in my mothers driveway! Life IS precious and every xmas we are reminded as his anniversary looms in a couple of weeks.
