My father retired as a top bureaucrat from Haryana in 1995…from the batch of unusual honest IAS officers!!! Soon after he passed away peacefully. Growing up I never saw him throwing his weight around or being arrogant. As kids we lived in huge government houses with security men and what not but he was very clear that none of that was permanent or ours. He didn’t have properties or tons of money that I heard other IAS officers had. We had one simple house when he retired. That was his earning of life. I remember once my brother got upset with him and hold him, “papa, you should have made tons of money..how come we are always working hard?” And his response was, “ I started from scratch and my goal was to retire with dignity and peace of mind. Money can be momentary but your conscious will always prick you for the wrong deeds.” Good lesson that I tell my kids today. I can’t thank you enough for reminding me how proud I am today to be daughter of an IAS officer who worked day and night to help people and to make a difference.

My Shashtang namaskarams to you Palki. My father retired from the IAS and is 93 now. He belonged to that rare breed of honest officers who contributed to India selflessly. While I knew all the while that the Civil services was and is the steel frame work of India ...it is also true that it is loosing its sheen. The current breed are more keen on posting their own videos and blowing their own trumpet not understanding that it is their work they have to do. Being down to earth is missing...colluding with politicians for personal benefits is rampant...what I am saying is..they are diluting their own respect. Today I am proud of my dad and privileged to be son of an unsung hero...but the truth is he has always been my hero...admiring him silently..thanks Palki...May God bless you with eternal happiness. I think it’s unfair to say that only civil servants built modern India. There were a lot of other central government services whose personnel were the early pioneers of India. They took postings in remote locations without batting an eyelid, they’re children studying in the local schools, and the entire family surviving on a modest government salary. What was rich was the life they (we) had in terms of exposure to our country. We saw it when there were no roads in many places, and it took three days of travel by steam engine to reach one’s native place. The conversations we had at the dining table were rich with general knowledge, evenings were spent in pursuing the arts, and there was an atmosphere of culture. This is our inheritance from our parents’ generation. The nation builders

Lovely episode. Thank you Palki Sharma. Hope you get to read this comment. Here is a nice story about the genesis of the great Green Revolution. The first decade after independence was disastrous with famine, starvation and poverty. It was three bureaucrats who hatched a plan. A government scientist, who had just been returned from the U.S. after working with Professor Norman Borlaug, along with Home Secretary Shivaramakrishnan and finance secretary Subramanyam convinced PM Shastry to lift the ban on agricultural seed imports. That scientist was Professor MS Swaminathan. He used the improved seeds from the US and Europe to develop high yielding crop varieties for the Indian farmers. India’s food production grew rapidly and triggered economic growth and prosperity. We call him the Father of Green Revolution and we will celebrate his 98th birthday tomorrow August 7.

Surprisingly one-sided take on India's civil services and a flashback on some noted civil servants who shaped our country. But, Palki Sharma usually presents a balanced perspective giving both sides of a story, and this one didn't have any. This clip only celebrates civil servants while not even mentioning the enormous harm they have been causing to India's progress. While we have had fine civil servants since the ICS days, the system has largely remained ossified in archaic procedures and helps perpetuate status quo. Even PM Modi has been lamenting about the dogged pursuit of status quo by the civil servants since 2014. But the root cause of it all is that India adopted the very same political, administrative, and legal systems the British left behind. So, essentially we opposed British rule for over a century yet adopted the very same systems even after our so-called independence. Besides, civil servants have almost always pandered to whims and fancies of their political masters, for cushy or coveted postings with higher prestige and power, or to enrich themselves in dubious ways (some cut to their political masters too). Remember that the ICS and legal systems were designed by the British to effectively RULE over Indians, not to SERVE Indian masses. So, unless India overhauls its political, admin, and legal systems to SERVE Indian masses it will remain a rotten 3rd world country.

''It wasn't fair, but it was the British Raj, what did you expect?'' God forbid that India had been a colony of the Spanish Empire, the French Empire, the Belgian Empire or the nascent German Empire. Indians had no one to blame but themselves. After a hundred years of internecine conflict between the Mughal Empire and the Maratha Empire which caused both of them to decline fatally, the East India Company (after many previous defeats) finally saw off the Marathas on behalf of the Mughal Emperor and opened the door to British hegemony in India... a self-inflicted wound by the warring empires of India who had been killing each other by the hundreds of thousands, now all blamed on the British who actually arrived long after the whole thing started.

@@ximin_sleepy Some do not. There are many civil servants who did better work than the government in order to promote the growth of nation. And we can’t abolish everything as we will still need police officers to maintain law and order. And private organisations will also function for their own benefit. But what we can do is make the system more efficient and should keep checks on them also. Like proper training of police officers and making sure they are doing there duty. Also we should refrain the civil servants from entertaining the vip. For the vip security there can be private organisations providing bodyguards. In this way many people will get jobs also and the bureaucrats will focus on their jobs

Civil servants are still the backbone of our country. Without bureaucrats and technocrats government policy making is impossible. I have been a firm advocate for the role played by Civil servants and their contribution behind the scenes. Namaste 🙏

But we should also notice the cancer of corruption engineered by some extremely corrupt bureaucrats, those who charge their percent of share even in the slightest of administrative and executive procedures .

UPSC exams are still one of the most prestigious exams in the world…but only those people should prepare for these exams who are righteous, honest and want some positive changes in the society…civil servants who prepared for UPSC due to peer pressure or parental pressure will not be able to understand the real meaning of this FirstPost Channel’s video….if civil servants will become honest, common people won’t suffer…I know this will take time but this is still possible🙂

IAS has been the biggest reasons for missed opportunities in India for the last 70 odd years. Even Modi can't control these bureaucrats ...this area desperately requires a major rehaul towards modernization with much more accountability...having said that there have been exceptions but that's what they are exceptions we should certainly celebrate them...
