Hey Seekers! In the video, we mention the "smell" of methane-but as some of you have aptly pointed out, methane itself is odorless (and colorless, for that matter). The smell, traditionally associated with sewer gas, actually arises from methane mixing with hydrogen sulfide, a gas that commonly comes from decaying organic matter, or tert-butylthiol, an additive that is often added to natural gas for safety. Thanks for making sure our science is up to 'sniff!'

Hemp oil is cheaper to produce and more green. Sadly, you live in a world that is based on reality, and in reality they always favor whats practical. All cars today are made by fossil fuel oil lubicated industry machines, because hemp isnt practical. A multimillionaire company have already looked into what people think they havent, they pick the best choice. So next time you pickup something and get emotionally angry and sad becuase a company dont do what you think they should, its because they have already picked the best choice. Welcome to reality, we have reinvented plastic multiple times but there are important factors to why they arent used, that you dont know. Please use this logic and apply it on everything you see.

@@Repz98 "So next time you pickup something and get emotionally angry and sad becuase a company dont do what you think they should, its because they have already picked the best choice" What complete patronising corporatist nonsense! They don't choose what's best, they choose what makes the most profit or what's convenient. Built in obsolescence is not what's best. It's what ensures they can resell you the same item every few years. Bags that kill half the planet are not best, they're convenient. Plastic is not what's best - not my a long shot. There are millions of situations where plastic could be replaced by something less harmful, but it would cost more or be harder to make. Yes, the cost of getting rid of plastic may be taking a reusable bag to the supermarket, or using glass bottles, or making your electronic goods out of something a little harder to work with. So what? If mankind is not willing to suffer a little inconvenience and money to save the planet that we don't deserve to survive. The trouble is, the decision makers are almost all ruthless, amoral pieces of crap that only care about their profits.

@Dunkelelf35 жыл бұрын
well i was working in a plastic manufacturing company before.. we had a product development department and experimented a little with bio plastics.. the thing is that the source shouldn't be petrol but wood or plant based and then those bio plastics usually don't leave microplastic.. they can be broken down into nothing by bacteria, fungi and so on.. i mean we have found certain bacteria and fungi that can basically eat certain types of plastics.. the problem with it is that great now we have a way to get rid of polyurethane for example.. but that's only a fraction of the used styrene polymeres we produce.. it doesn't help with polystyrene, abs, polyethylene, etc. etc.. well polyethylene COULD be burned.. when you burn pe it's breaking down into water and co2.. however this is the worst you could do in terms of energy and carbon footprint because producing it in the first place needs lots of energy.. so recycling the plastics is always the way better option.. but recycling plastics isn't all to easy really.. the company that i worked for had a bunch of grinders and bought lots of scrap plastics back from customers, leftovers from deep drawing or just failed attempts that didn't work etc.. however the problem about it is that it's not so easy to distinguish one plastic from the other just by looking at it and if you for example mix abs and ps the plastic is ruined.. it will shatter like glass.. that's why the seperation is really important but that's the hardest part.. and this is the reason we have so much waste instead of companies that bother to recycle.. once we had a customer that send us abs but there was pvc mixed in.. now the problem is that for pvc extrusion you use different machines and that you run them way colder for pvc than abs so the machine blew up and we had a ginormous damage.. it gave a huge fight with this customer and we didn't trade with them for a long time anymore.. so really plastic would not be so bad if it would be handled better so it can be reused as you can basically recycle it indefinitely if you keep it clean and mix a little fresh and new plastic within from time to time.. just that it isn't handled well, gets mixed up or formed into products where it's not really seperateable from other things anymore..

For all the people suggesting Hemp and Hemp byproducts please look at the underlying economics. The system shown in this video utilises current infrastructure to capture and reuse methane. If we were to globally stand up a Hemp based solution we are looking at a massive land surface and the impact on biodiversity would be catastrophic. There would certainly be ways to optimise growth but Hemp needs to be planted on a relatively horizontal surface. Scaling vertically is where the presented solution has the advantage. The other consideration is the barrier properties of plastics is not currently available in hemp based products. Thus it could not be used in anything food or pharma related. Everyone always gets on the Hemp/Cane bandwagon as if scientists haven't heard of it before. Hemp products certainly have their place in making the world better. But in my opinion they are a placeholder for a better technology.

In Denmark we have something called "pant" it's where they will add 14 cents in cost to all glass bottles/cans, 22 cents for half liter bottle and 44 cents for anything bigger, we then have these bottle machines we can return our bottles in to get that extra cost back in store credit or cash, so there is almost never any bottles in bins or thrown on the street, because if someone throws a bottle a homeless person or a student on low cash will pick it up and recycle it for cash, as an example sometimes there are huge parties in parks in the summer, and there are thousands of cans and bottles floating around, but there will be atleast 20 people picking the empty cans up and easily earning $100 + each, this is very effective, also we have been using milk cartons made out of paper for centuries, i don't understand why some countries still use plastic containers for something like milk.

I'm curious about whether or not it would have a similar endocrine-disrupting effect that current plastics have. I'm all for reducing use of plastics and solving the pollution problem, especially as it pertains to the oceans but I'm more focused on the negative health consequences that plastics have had not only on our environment, but on ourselves as well.

Hey what happened to converting the plastics we have back to the hydrocarbons they were made of in the first place? Then reuse as plastic again or used as fuels. Maybe even just melt the plastics and reform In to another product for use. What’s wrong with the plastics we have now?

Finnish company, Woodly Oy, is developing a new kind of plastic that is carbon neutral. The packaging material, also named Woodly, is made of cellulose that comes from sustainably managed and FSC certified forests. Woodly has the same qualities as regular plastic, and it can be used in the production of different kinds of recyclable packaging. The innovation has gained international attention since it received a high placement in a ranking list by Bioplastic News, a publication that evaluates bioplastic companies and brands.

@@AsG_4_ Grinding takes energy and since patience makes that sort of paper recycleble more often I'd opt for the choice if I knew my paper waste wasn't burned 90% of the time or knew the paper mill could control energy usage in ways that add stability to a renewable grid (as overproduction /cheap electricity will be necessary by the next decade).

I'm no enviro nut by any means and am a strong fossil fuels supporter, but I think things like this is very beneficial because it means it gives fossil fuels that much more of a lifeline to produce things that either just can't be produced without it or gives many of the things we depend on it for such as traveling to be prolonged.

" strong fossil fuels supporter " Why?
@Junokaii5 жыл бұрын
@@lemonwithalime Why not? Can you name a resource that has had such a profound impact on the positivity of human flourishing? Yeah we're finding alternatives now, but everything from agriculture to makeup has its base from fossil fuels. Contrary to belief, as I suspect from your need to put strong fossil fuels supporter in quotes, why the snit? Why can't I be both an environmentalist and a fossil fuels supporter? They're not contradictions of one another.

Parts is also called komatia which is more direct of a translation. Komatia is like pieces or parts of a puzzle let's say. We use meri cause it is about where and how the connections happen and how many they are.

There are companies much further in the development of PHA-materials. The methane-based technology is not new, a company called Newlight Technology has already scaled it up. But for now, the most 'competitive' way for making PHA is by starting from plant oils. Companies like Kaneka already have large scale production capabilities. And by 'competitive' I mean 3-4x the price of a PE or PP.

I'm less concerned of a future replacement and more concerned with the current problem. What about the ways we are currently reusing or repurposing plastics that already exist? We aren't going to run out of it any time soon since it takes forever to degrade so what are we doing to what we have and why is it still an issue? What is at play? It appears to be more of an issue in society and less of the actual material itself

Did you know that the Ganges river is the source of water for over 400 million people? It's also one of the most polluted rivers on the planet, so there's a lot of used plastic in that water. I seen where an entity is producing plastic building bricks out of recycled plastic. Slat who should have gotten the NYT person award for starting a company that produces equipment to clean the oceans & rivers could take his technology to the Ganges. That way he cleans up the water to make it safe,he would also be able to turn that plastic to provide those who're in extreme poverty a safe house to life in.He would be able to provide jobs to those who clean up the river, those who would melt the used plastic into bricks, those who would use the bricks to build a house, and those who would install solar & plumbing for clean drinking water through new public infrastructure.
