He had accomplished biological immortality, something Palpatine would go on to dearly desire in his later years, and he was willing to pass on that knowledge to him. Killing Plagueis early was unanimously a bad move, which I assume was brought on by Palpatine getting paraniod about his rejuvinated appearance and jumping the gun.

Once he got elected as chancellor with the help of plagueis, he didn’t need him anymore in his mind

Palpatine had a tough choice to make; 1: Let his master learn the secret to true immortality and teach him as well. But then he would never be able to become the Sith master and would always be under Plagueis for eternity. Or 2: Kill his master before he learns and become the Sith master and make his own path to immortality. If the Force Ghosts hadn’t teamed up on him he would have been victorious.

I remember when that part came up in the book and I was so conflicted. On the one hand it was a very Sith thing to do, the master must be killed to take the position for yourself. However, it was also very short-sighted. Plagueis was thinking big picture. Sideous wanted to rule the galaxy, which was then becoming a reality, but Plagueis was making it so they could rule the galaxy FOREVER. But Sideous was so eager for power that he would rather rule the galaxy for a few decades than be an apprentice forever.

I have a theory When Sidious murdered Plageus it was the dark side that spoke to him to do so. The reason why is this. If Darth Sidious would have become immortal he would have turned the universe into essentially the eclipse from Berserk except it never ends and it's on every planet all the time. And if he needed to, he would betray all of the dark side's teachings to get more power. The Dark side basically said look I am evil but Sidious is *EVIL* and while he serves my purpose at the moment eventually, he needs to die so I can move on to the next disciple.
