Outstanding video !!!! I don't have that many mango's...and maybe only 15 tropicals. But have maintained 600 plants or so for many yrs...been gardening for over 25 yrs and have planted nearly 7000 plants. I am a temperature finatic. Have checked it every single day for over 22 yrs. This is great info & he confirms--with his outstanding bkgrd & credentials--what I thought I knew or believed to a T.

Homestead is so beautiful! I was there two months ago! For us in Carolina, 24°F is good. But I can understand that mangoes are for a warmer climate. It’s interesting how you refer to mangoes as subtropical. It’s cool to learn more

I had one in a pot at 32 or so every night almost for the whole cold season. I also did the same with a coconut palm and another purely tropical palm. All survived except the coco, but that was due to drought I think, not cold. Our dry cold is very different from the Cold they receive in say Northern Florida. Our dry air makes it so that the cold does not “bite” as much. In some instances we can get away with 4-5 degrees colder compared to a humid cold on certain species of tree. The cold spells are usually at night as well and it heats up every single day so we got that going for us too. My climate is 9A/9B however due to the conditions I described I can grow some 10A plants and trees.

Best video so far on cold survival of trees. 🎉 Thank you so much. I’m in Ocala and I’m trying to hold on to my Malika mango. It is not in the ground but I want to try to put in the ground next year with Christmas lights. Love the details.

If you don’t mind the variety, try the Gomera-1 mango, of the Canary Islands of Spain. Said to be fiberous, but tasty

I also live in Ocala and I have a Pickering mango tree, I’m going to try to put it in the ground too. I’m thinking of getting a small portable green house to protect it from the cold temperatures we get up here every now and then.

I bought one of those cold hardy "Thomson" mangoes here in Escondido,Ca years ago It produced a couple of suckers which I allowed to grow along with the graft long story short, we had a cold snap and the graft croaked but suckers did just fine it is now a regular producer of excellent mangoes

Love from Bangladesh. You should definitely try raising Bangladeshi mango trees like Amrupali, lengra, Harivanga, Himsagar etc. These are not better looking mangoes but taste wise these are really awesome. Their brix is also above 20. I can confirm you won't be disappointed.

Growing a few up in lake city. The worst smell in the world, waking up after a hard freeze and smelling the death.

Pretty sure they grow them in regions in India and Pakistan that get colder than anywhere in Florida. Someone should check out those varieties.
